Chương 8: Assaulted at Night
After Yan Ming led everybody to a private room, he brought out a map and said, "As you all know, we will be traveling to the Southern Region. It'll be a week-long journey, and because we are also transporting valuable resources, we'll most likely encounter hired bandits."
Yan Ming looked around and continued, "We have two people at the eighth level Qi Condensation, two at the seventh level Qi Condensation, three at the sixth level Qi Condensation, and one at the ninth Condensation, not including my personal bodyguards and my daughter, who will also be participating in this travel."
"Now allow me to say this — even though the items being transported are important, my daughter's safety comes first! If anything happens to her during the trip, you will feel my entire Yan Family's wrath, and I will not stop at just you!"
Yan Ming spoke with a serious expression and a threatening aura, his cultivation base at the ninth level Foundation Establishment leaking.
"Don't worry, Senior Yan! Even if I have to sacrifice my own life, I will ensure that Lady Yan will not be harmed!" Wen Junjia patted his chest with confidence.
[Well, even though I said that, I doubt anything will happen to her with him around…] Yan Ming thought to himself as he glanced at Wu Tianyi, who he still cannot fathom the slightest.
"The horses and carriages will be ready within an hour. Until then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask my daughter. Now if you'll excuse me, I have other business to attend." Yan Ming said.
"I leave the items in your care, Jinxuan." Yan Ming said to her before leaving the room.
After Yan Ming left, Wen Junjia and Geng Lijuan immediately approached Yan JJinxuan.
"Lady Yan, I have some questions—"
"If you don't mind, I have—"
However, Yan Jinxuan ignored the two and approached Wu Tianyi, who was casually standing there.
"Do you have any questions for me, Brother Tianyi?" she asked him with a smile on her face.
"I have none." Wu Tianyi immediately responded.
[Che! This bastard, even though I had warned him to not court my girl! Does he think I am some pushover that can be ignored without any consequences?! Just you wait, I will deal with you later!] Wen Junjia gnashed his teeth in anger, his gaze filled with envy as he watched his beloved stand so close to another man and appear so happy when she ignored him for over a year despite his efforts and advances.
Meanwhile, Geng Lijuan watched them with a bitter smile on his face.
[Just from watching him destroy the low-grade golem with ease, even an idiot can tell that Brother Wu is an extraordinary man. In this world, strength is the first thing a woman sees when looking at a man, so it's not weird for Lady Yan to be attracted to him. Looks like I'm not fated to be with her…] Instead of being devoured by envy, Geng Lijuan chooses to accept reality.
Approximately an hour later, someone notified them that they were ready to travel.
"Young miss, the horses and carriages are ready. We can leave at any time."
Yan Jinxuan nodded and said to the others, "Let's head out!"
Once they reached the gates, two large carriages and a dozen horses were waiting for them.
"The carriage in the front is what's being transported. My family's guards will take the rear horses while the rest of you will take the front. If you need anything during the journey, pass it through your leader, who will then pass it to me. I will be in the second carriage." Yan Jinxuan commanded them like an experienced general before entering the second carriage.
However, before she entered the carriage, Yan Jinxuan turned to look at Wu Tianyi and said, "Brother Tianyi, if you want, you may come inside the carriage with me."
Wu Tianyi was obviously aware of her intentions and shook his head. "I can't deal with carriages and am more accustomed to horses, so I'll have to pass on that offer."
Yan Jinxuan showed a disappointed expression and nodded, "Then if you ever change your mind, just come inside."
[At least this bastard knows his boundaries.] Wen Junjia silently cursed at him.
After taking a few minutes to ensure that everything was ready, the group began their journey to the Southern Region.
The first day of the journey was relatively quiet, as everyone was trying to get accustomed to their atmosphere.
On the second day, the bodyguards began introducing themselves to each other. Of course, Wu Tianyi remained silent the entire time.
"How are you feeling, Brother Tianyi? Do you want to take a break?" Yan Jinxuan asked him through the carriage's window during the midday of the third day.
"I will be fine even if I don't take a break until we arrive in the Southern Region. However, I cannot say the same for the rest."
Yan Jinxuan looked at the other bodyguards, but none of them seemed even the least exhausted. After all, cultivators have much more endurance than the average human, so they can go for days without sleep or food and still feel perfectly fine.
"We will take a break tonight until the next morning," she said a moment later.
"Yes, young miss!"
The bodyguards acknowledged.
A few hours later, when night arrived, the group stationed their horses and made a camp right beside the carriages.
"Although we will be taking a break, do not lose your focus and remain alert at all times!" Geng Lijuan said to the others.
"Thanks for the reminder, captain obvious! Might as well tell us to watch out for bandits!" Wen Junjia sneered before entering his own tent.
"Brother Tianyi, it'll be cold tonight. Do you want to sleep in the carriage with me tonight? There's enough room for two people." Yan Jinxuan boldly asked him to spend the night in the same closed space with her, dumbfounding the people there. None of them knew that she was capable of being this aggressive and shameless — not even the bodyguards that have served under her for many years.
[This girl is quite persistent…] Even Wu Tianyi was impressed by her relentless character.
"I will be cultivating tonight, so I won't be sleeping," he said to her.
"Is that so…" Although she was disheartened, Yan Jinxuan did not have an aura of defeat around her. "Not only are you talented but you also work hard. I should really learn from you, Brother Tianyi. With that being said, I will also stay up tonight and cultivate."
The place was quiet for the next few hours with half of the group asleep and the other half either cultivating or keeping post.
*Rustle* *Rustle*
Wu Tianyi suddenly caught wind of some unnatural noises and stopped cultivating. He opened his eyes and turned to look in a certain direction.
"We have uninvited guests!" He shouted.
"What?!"
"Where?!"
All of the sleeping guards immediately woke up and those already awake quickly readied their weapons.
However, when nothing happened even after many moments, they turned to look at Wu Tianyi with frowns on their faces.
"I don't hear anything!" one of them said.
"You must have been dreaming!" Wen Junjia laughed.
"Brother Tianyi…" Yan Jinxuan looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"Brother Wu, are you sure—"
Just as Geng Lijuan opened his mouth, Wu Tianyi shouted again, "They're here!"
A second after Wu Tianyi shouted, over a dozen flying daggers flew at the group from the darkness.
"Ahhh!"
"My eye!"
A few bodyguards were unable to react and were instantly caught by the flying daggers.
After the flying daggers stopped appearing, over a dozen figures could be seen jumping out of the shadow and began attacking the group.
"The enemy is here! Guard the items and protect Lady Yan!" Geng Lijuan shouted as he cleaved the large saber in his arms at one of the enemies.
"Be careful! Half of them are at least at sixth level Qi Condensation!" Yan Jinxuan warned the guards as she prepared to protect the carriage with the items.
"Ahhhh!"
"What the fu—!"
"Ahhhhhh!"
"Where—?!"
"Ahhhh!"
"Help! There's a monster—"
"Ahhhhhhhh!"
However, before any of the guards could receive any serious injuries, Wu Tianyi maneuvered within the darkness with the Disappearing Steps and eliminated the enemies within the blink of an eye.
A few minutes later, over thirty dead bodies laid on the floor with none of them belonging to Wu Tianyi's group.
"..."
The place became dead silent, and all of the people there were speechless.
[He actually killed most of them in such a short time! It seems like I was still underestimating him!] Geng Lijuan looked at Wu Tianyi with wide eyes, his body trembling in fear.
[T-This bastard…] Even Wen Junjia trembled when he saw Wu Tianyi surrounded by bloody corpses and still remained nonchalant, almost like he was experienced with these kinds of situations.
"B-Brother Wu Tianyi…" Yan Jinxuan mumbled his name in shock while covering her mouth with her hands.
However, Wu Tianyi ignored their state of mind and said, "We should move before more of them arrive."
"R-Right! Let's go!" Geng Lijuan snapped out of his daze and said to the others.
The group did not even pack their tents before jumping on their horses and returning on the road.
