Chương 21: Chapter 21: I'm watching you maiden of Death

I sat at the edge of the huge window watching him. It's become a routine for me. I'd wake up every morning, watching him as he combs his horse. He seems to like that very much.

It's been a month since I got married to Lord Sage. The guardian of the olive gate. Things have been going well for me, I guess. At least I still have a roof on my head, food to eat, a bed to lay in. He practically made sure I had all my needs met. Yet, I felt guilty inside.

I didn't deserve this, a good life wasn't meant for a person like me. I was nothing more than a killer, the weight of my actions are heavily resting on my shoulders.

I turned to the room I was in, it was another library located at the east wing of the manor. A little bit smaller than the one I usually had classes in, but the structure and pattern were pretty much the same as the library I was use to. I was meant to be studying like Lady Cornette had instructed me but right now staring at him was more pleasing to my eyes than the letters in the enormous textbook on the table.

I watched his every movement, from stroking his horse to feeding it. A giddy feeling creeped inside me, I couldn't explain it but it had me smiling.

Sage turned towards me and stared at me blankly, I could feel my cheeks get warm and my heart skip a beat. What was this feeling?

"Milady!!!" Lady Cornette roared behind me. Studdering in my feets I fell off the window and hit my bottom hard on the floor. I turned to Lady Cornette with a jaunty smile.

"I was just getting fresh air" I said, it wasn't a lie neither the truth but I did plan to get fresh air, not until I got side tracked.

"Hmm..." Her eyes narrowed and scrutinized me as I picked myself off the ground. When I glanced back at the window, Sage had already left the stable. I felt a little bit disappointed.

"It's almost time for lunch " Lady Cornette had an unsatisfied look on her face. Her eyes trailed me nonstop and it had me feeling like I was covered in dirt. "Go to the dinning hall" she urges me and walked to the table to clear the books I was reading.

"He should have married Vilma not her" I heard Cornette sigh behind the door. The anger and disappointment was evident in her voice.

I nodded and left to get ready, I could only smile mildly as I walked down the hallway. I was sure that I've heard this name before.

"Milady" i turned to Gry who was walking beside me. I hadn't noticed her presence.

"Good evening Gry" i bowed slightly and smiled. Gry had a frown on her face.

"Are you alright milady?" She held my arm and assisted me with my gown. I nodded. "You look worried about something"

"Emm, who's Vilma?" I asked, Gry should know who Vilma was, I guess I could reply on her.

"Vilma is the Lord's betrothed" Gry answered shortly and pat my hands softly. "Don't worry about anything okay"

I guess she knew how that would hurt me, I nodded and tailed her. Why didn't Sage get married to Vilma? Why me?

DINNING HALL

Oona bit my lower lip as she watched Sage eat. She had her thoughts rumbling against each other, why didn't Sage marry Vilma?

It was obvious that his family were surprised that he got married to her, so why?

Lady Cornette's words still echoed in my head, why? What made him change his mind?

Oona looked up at him and parted her lips fo speak but then closed them and ate her meal. She doubt he would want to talk about her. No matter the reason, it was obvious that she was married to him now. But then again how long would their marriage last?

The only thing she had managed to do is this marriage is to milk off Sage's kindness, a liability. She wondered why he haven't thrown her out, cause she could clearly remember that she failed his test.

"If you have something to say, say it" Sage commented bluntly.

"I was wondering.." she started "why didn't you get married to your betrothed but got married to me"

The entire dinning room turned cold. Sage still looked composed "why do you ask?"

"Well, I just find it a little bit off. I mean I'm sure you must have loved your betrothed and still do" Oona continued, she felt a little bit relieved that he didn't flare up.

"I still do so?" Oona bit her lower lip, her heart banged in her chest, from how hard his words hurt her.

"So why did you get married to me?" Her voice was a little bit mellow and calm. "Isn't she hurt that you're married to me?"

Sage tilted his head "I told you it was for my own benefits" he was gradually losing his cool.

"Couldn't you have had me as a maid at least and be with the one you love?" She tried to stop herself from asking more questions but she felt hurt knowing that she had no chance with Sage.

"You would be a waste as a maid" Sage retorted and ate his meal. The dinning hall fell silent and all the servants present were tensed. Oona hadn't noticed yet but Sage was suppressing his anger and trying to be calm.

"Does that mean I'm her replacement " Oona asked.

"What makes you think you can replace Vilma?" Sage growled at her and snapped his head towards her coldly. "You aren't even worth a concubine where Vilma stands and you think you're a replacement for her"

His words choked her, "don't fool yourself more than you're already doing?" Turning to his meal he scoffed. "When I'm done extorting you, I'd do away with you just like I was instructed. Nothing more"

Oona felt terrified to her bones, she didn't expect that as a reply but then what was she really expecting?

"Leave" Sage turned to her with a blank expression. Oona turned to him surprised but she already knew what he meant. Standing up from her seat she left the hall with tears in her eyes. All the servants turned to their Master, pity and sadness on their face. Sage stared at his meal and gritted his teeth.

Oona had just walked out of the closet when she found Sage sleeping soundly in the bed. Guilt and pain held her shoulders. She felt like resuming her tears from when they kicked off.

Oona bit her lower lip and laid at the very end of the bed. She wished she never asked such questions. Her stomach churned out of guilt, she never thought of the fact that Sage might be hurt.

She pretended to fall asleep and listened to the wind that blew outside the window. Sage stood up after a while and left the room. This only added to the pain she felt, her eyes glimmered as teary waters rolled.

Shutting her eyes, she forced herself to sleep.

I woke up with a ache in my head almost as if I had hit it against a wall. Sage wasn't in bed, which hurt me a little bit. I turned to the window and sighed, it was already morning. Shutting my eyes, I clawed out the tangled parts of my head.

"Why are you here?" I opened my eyes slowly with a frown. I've never heard such voice before, it was like a siren's call coupled with thunder. I looked round but no one was there. I was the only one in the room so who was talking to me.

"Hello, any one there" I sat up and adjusted my clothes. I turned to the window and gasped, it was dark and eerie. What was happening?

"You seem scared" the voice continued coldly "why are you scared?"

"Who are you?" I asked warily, anxiety creeped my heart.

"A dead woman " the voice replies sadly, the next minute a woman stood in front of me. I jolted back.

"It's you" i pointed, it was the lady I met once lost in the manor. "Why are you here?"

"That's my line " she hissed. "I know who you are" my throat ran dry at her domineering figure, her black gown floated in the wind and her hood finally fell off.

My heart felt like bursting out of my chest. She had a hole on her neck with dead blood pricking out. Her eyes had dark circles underneath and dead blood flowing down her cheeks like tears. Her skin was grey and dry just like her straight hair that rested on her shoulder but her face still eluded life, somehow.

"I'm watching you maiden of death" she gazed at me with disgust and hate. Her hands slowly stretched towards me and I felt a tight grip on my neck. I fell back on the bed and thrashed hard. I felt suffocated with every passing second.

Tears burned my cheeks , why wasn't my powers activating like they normally did? I needed to save myself. I felt my limbs get numb and lose strength. I could only look at her helplessly as she squeezed out life from me.

Was I going to die here? "One wrong move and you'll end up with me"

Oona yelled out and sat up abruptly, startling sage who had just stepped in.sje gasped for air while rubbing her neck. Fear was plastered on her face and worst of all she could clearly hear the echoing voice of the woman.
