Yan Zheyun didn't look up from the tiles in front of him. He clicked together a sequence of 'two bamboo', 'three bamboo', and 'four bamboo', and threw a glance at the table to calculate the odds of obtaining the green 'Fa' tile (1).

"Be careful what you speak about, Lord Chen," he murmured.

Lord Chen shot him a disgruntled look but shrank into his seat. Even though he was of a higher rank than Yan Zheyun, in the past couple of weeks, it had become evident just how dearly the emperor held Lord Yue in his heart; if Lord Yue were even permitted to return to Yuyang Palace in the day, the phoenix spring carriage would show up without fail by nightfall to ferry him back to the emperor's palace.

(1) Types of mahjong tiles. In this case, they are all green coloured tiles, which Yan Zheyun is focusing on in this round to help him build a particular hand. The green ‘Fa’ tile is a tile with a green character for ‘wealth’ on it.

(2) Zhuque Street: The main street in Chang An city, which I borrowed to use in this fictional capital. It was the widest and longest street and those who could afford to have houses that lined it were very influential.

(3) Peng: A word that means ‘to touch’. Called out by a player when an opponent throws out a tile that would allow them to form a ‘three of a kind’ set.

(4) Chi: A word that means ‘to eat’. Called out by a player when the opponent directly before them throws out a tile that would allow them to form a ‘running sequence’ set.

(5) Lv yi se: Means ‘green all of the same colour’. This is a very difficult winning hand, that is made up of only the following tiles: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 bamboo and Fa.
