Histoire watched Rosie reach into the front pocket of her jeans and pull out a small bag. From behind the other side of her, in Histoire's blindside, a chipmunk and a mouse ran out and towards her hand. She opened the bag and poured its contents onto her hand. Histoire saw that they were an assortment of nuts. The mouse ran around underneath the reach of her arm a number of times and stopped to pick up one of the nuts with its tiny hands.
As for the chipmunk, it reached out for a nut as well, but came to a halt to abruptly turn its head to face Histoire's direction. Rosie reciprocated the act. She almost dropped the nuts but kept her hand steady.
"It's hard for them to find food in the snow," she stated defensively. She believed Histoire had followed her to bring her back indoors. Histoire shook her head and took that as a queue to enter the small opening.
