He turned his around weakly, finding his teammates in stable conditions despite losing their arms. Unlike him who lost both of his arms, they lost one arm which included Daemon who was also clutching his arm.
Although the cost was too much, they prevented another disaster from happening, so he had no complaints even though he died there.
" Rammes!"
The female inquisitor lifted his head up, gently placing it on her lap as she looked at him with pain. For many years they had worked together and she harbored feelings for him even though he had a family. She always believed she would meet her end beside him, not like this.
" Why are you crying, Selena? We have won in the end. The cardinal is dead and the creature is dead too. Although I feel pity for the messenger, he had done his job."
Rammes smiled softly, looking at her with a soft face. He knew she had feelings for him despite her cold outward and he couldn't accept it because he loved his wife and children, yet this woman stood next to him until his end which was ironic.
" Fool. You could have lived if you didn't try to lift it alone. You never believed you would make it alive, didn't you?"
She choked on her words, observing his face with a hoarse voice. She could see he was getting paler and paler as his end was near. The life was sipping away from them as the death was ready to embrace him.
" It doesn't matter. One life is worth thousands. You will save thousands of lives in my absence and I believe in you. Please fulfill my promise to them and tell my family that I couldn't make it."
Rammes spoke weakly, losing his strength in every word that he uttered. The darkness was slowly approaching his consciousness as he felt the warm embrace of his God. Perhaps the death took a pity on him and granted him a gentle death after witnessing his valiant charge.
" Rammes!"
She weakly caressed his head with a tear in her eyes, knowing he wouldn't wake up anymore. He already crossed the realm of life, entering the domain where he would rest eternally.
" Rammes!"
The other inquisitors also cried out with pain, seeing his death right before their eyes. Even though they were used to seeing others die before them, it was painful to witness their leader passing away in a deserted place like this. Nonetheless, he fought to his very end and passed away with a calm heart.
" May the sun and gods would embrace your soul."
The inquisitors chanted together, honoring him in his death with their blessing. They hoped he would reach the place where he would rest calmly after witnessing this horror.
" Lord Rammes."
Licht came to his side with a sad face whilst looking at the inquisitors. He could tell they were feeling sadness and he also did the same even though he had limited interaction with him.
The wind gently blew his hair as his teammates approached them with different expressions but each of them was mourning for him who gave away his life to his comrades and strangers.
" Please take this to cover his face."
Regina took out a clean sheet from her back, handing it to Selena who was mourning for him. She raised her head up to meet their gazes as she expressed her gratitude to them in silence.
That expression spoke a thousand words to Regina and others who could tell about her thoughts.
" He was a great man."
Daemon opened his mouth to ease their tension. The rest of them also nodded at his words while lifting him from the ground. The inquisitors didn't say anything as they placed him on their shoulders, heading toward High Sand where he would be preserved until the priest came to his coffin where he would cast spells to purify him and conserve his body.
" Let's go."
Licht took a look at the remaining giants, thinking it was finally over, but little did he know that he missed something. It was a little serpent that came out from her mother's body as she looked at them with fiery eyes.
