“No way!” Adam laughed. “My mom was diving with sharks in the Bahamas?”

“Well, I didn’t mean to. It just turned out that some sharks happened to be where we were diving.” Jessi pushed back from the outdoor table, still strewn with detritus from dinner, and crossed her legs, taking a sip of her wine. “If I had known, I don’t think you could have gotten me in the water.”

Judd took a long pull from his Blue Moon and laughed. “Don’t let her fool you. Your mom’s a badass.”

Adam and Judd went on to compare notes on diving various locations around the Caribbean. Jessi looked to Cara who sat quietly observing the scene. She reached over and patted her daughter’s hand. “How’s work, sweetie?” Jessi asked quietly.

Cara dragged her eyes away from Judd and Adam. “Oh, you know,” she sighed, “it’s okay. I’m a little bored with weather all the time, though. I’ve sort of started looking at postings for producer positions in news.”

“Really? I thought you were happy where you are.”
