Chương 8: Tumultuous thoughts
Stella sat in silence, her mind filled with tumultuous thoughts about her daughter. She couldn't help but imagine a future where Jude, with his affluent appearance and gentlemanly demeanor, would bring her daughter both happiness and despair. As she pictured Jude in his Russian attire and stylish sunglasses, adorned with a gold-studded quartz watch, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. What if Jude's family didn't accept Juli? Even if they did, how would Juli cope in a household fraught with discord? The thought of her daughter suffering in silence was unbearable. Yet, in the uncertainty, there was a glimmer of hope that Jude could provide her with a life of joy and abundance. With these conflicting thoughts swirling in her mind, Stella found herself at a loss for words.
Taking advantage of the situation, Jude continued to win their hearts, 'Uncle and aunt, I wish to marry your daughter for moral support. I will fill her life with happiness, joy, and prosperity and never let you hold any grudge against me. Trust me, I have become responsible after falling prey to my past. My parents are not so bad. They will accept Juli as a member of our family. I have talked to them, and they reacted neutrally, but I am sure when I introduce her to them, they will surely acknowledge her with acceptance. '
As George stood up and began to stroll around the room, he reached for his pipe on the table and lost himself in deep contemplation. It seemed nearly impossible to take his words at face value without consulting his parents. This would be their first meeting, and the gravity of the situation was not lost on anyone. While it's commonly said that first impressions are lasting when it comes to your daughter, there was no room for error. It was getting darker. The clouds began to emit a roaring sound. The hooting of the birds and the clatter of animals ceased. It was high time to come to a decision.
George stood back erect and spoke in a strict tone to cross-check him, "OK. OK, how can I believe that all you say is true? I am not at all a doting father to come into the trap of your sugary and emotional words. Still, I am in a dilemma about whether to trust you or not. Stella, what do you say about it?"
"I don't know him thoroughly. Nothing can be fixed at the moment," Stella responded.
"Respected aunt, I will bring my parents to your house for further clarification. I already spoke to them before coming. The consent of both parties is essential to building a new relationship. I am sensitive enough to follow my elders. I am not the one who will escape from all the family responsibilities," he could say to convince them.
" Juli, do you want to say anything? Are you ready to spend your life with him," George suddenly retorted.
Juli raised her downcast eyes to confront her father, "Dear father, I leave it up to you and Mom. I will treasure your judgment. I have been saying it from the start."
Stella sighed, "We cannot impose our decisions forcefully upon you. Without your consent, we cannot proceed ahead. Don't think us to be so heartless. The Almighty has bestowed us with only two daughters. We wish them to flourish in every field, but when it comes to making valuable decisions concerning their lives, the mutual consent of everyone is imperative."
Juli got emotional. A lone drop of tear escaped involuntarily from her eyes. The fear of losing her parents was looming around. She knew well that it was a very crucial moment for her. The conflict was between her parental love and the love of her life. Both were an integral part of her life. Even though they would give her the best, she was also fearful of losing Jude forever somewhere in her heart.
Jude stood staring at Juli with love. A scintilla of hope spread from his eyes to her, glaring at each other. He had come to meet with a final decision, but here everything was going on to the extreme. He regretted not bringing his parents. How could he when his mother didn't have time to mend her button knowing the fact that he was going ahead with a proposal? Her friends were more influential for her. He cursed his fate, the moment and the hour. If only he could produce his parents from nowhere, they might not have had any objection. His father was usually in the office, and he thought him to be the sensible man at the moment. He decided to enclose everything for him first.
"No need to stress yourself. I have some official work to complete. Give us some time to contemplate chap. We have heard your verdict. Now I need to consult everyone and retrospect upon the matter. Marriage is not a matter of one day. Come on, you can have your dinner with us if you wish. Stella brought some cookies for him," George snapped his fingers, throwing a nasty smile like that of a stern lawyer.
"No, uncle, thanks so much for it, uncle. I will come back only when you have finally decided. Bye for now. I will meet you soon," Jude stood up to exit.
"Yes, boy, as you wish. We will not leave you in confusion. Hoping to call you soon," George shook hands with him.
He offered his hand to Juli for a shake. She refused it. They exchanged some stealing glances, waved goodbye, and parted ways. She had never imagined that the day would end like this. The parting was extremely passionate considering the present situation. It was like winning or losing a game. She left the lot to her parents, but the trauma was visible in her twinkling eyes, which lost the perpetual spark.
Stella could fathom her pain, yet she was pretending to abide by the decision of her husband acting diplomatically.
