Chapter 55 New Year's Eve
Every year, Times Square hosts a grand New Year's Eve celebration, and this year is no exception. Despite many buildings nearby still undergoing repairs, the scale of the event is even larger than previous years.
"Bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new, everyone wishes for a good start."
Gwen wraps her arm around Andrew's and exclaims, "This year has been filled with too many disasters. Everyone hopes for a calm and prosperous new year."
Andrew shakes his head. "The wheel of history cannot be stopped."
"Don't be so pessimistic," Gwen protests.
"The fact is, when you look back in the future, you will find that this year was the best among the next ten years," Andrew says.
Gwen is dissatisfied. "Do you have to be so gloomy?"
"The number of disasters will only increase," Andrew continues. "But let's not talk about that. You've been busy lately. Tonight, let's enjoy ourselves and explore the New Year's celebration. It's my first time attending."
Gwen feels a twinge of guilt. She, Jessica, and Sky have formed a small team of superheroes called the Hell's Kitchen Heroes and have been busy, barely finding time for homework, let alone spending time with Andrew.
Gwen assures him, "I promise to spend quality time with you tonight."
Soon, the countdown reaches the final seconds of 2008. At Times Square, everyone joins in unison, "Three, two, one... Happy New Year!"
2009 officially arrives, but contrary to the expectations of the people, this year is destined not to be peaceful.

"Everyone is hoping for the disasters to be over, but according to my calculations, the number of disasters will only increase," Norman Osborn, who looks considerably aged, hands a glass of wine to General Ross of the United States Army, stating.
General Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross, nicknamed "Thunderbolt," takes the glass and says, "Our army will protect the United States."
"The truth is, the previous disasters were not resolved by the military," Norman says with a smile. "General Ross, don't take offense, but the military's power is insufficient, completely overshadowed by those so-called superheroes."
"The military is not weak; it simply lacks the time to mobilize," General Ross retorts impatiently. "Norman, what are you trying to say?"
"I believe we should collaborate on the development of human enhancement serums," Norman suggests. "Once we succeed, the Army will restore the glory it had during World War II."
General Ross asks, "I heard your Osborn Industries' human enhancement serum failed?"
"It didn't fail, but it had a minor flaw. Some of the test subjects became extremely violent," Norman corrects. "As long as you, General Ross, are willing to share the military's human enhancement experiment formula and data, I'm confident I can completely solve this flaw."
Both Osborn Industries' human enhancement serum and the military's human enhancement experiments are attempts to replicate Dr. Erskine's Super Soldier Serum, the same serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America.
Similar projects exist throughout the United States, with Osborn Industries' serum being the closest to the Super Soldier Serum—the same level as Howard Stark's attempts to replicate the serum.
General Ross hesitates for a moment, then says, "I'm willing to cooperate with Osborn Industries, but besides the formula for the human enhancement serum, I also want the formula for the Lizard Serum."
Norman is taken aback but then says, "The Lizard Serum? General Ross, the people who were administered Lizard serum develop a separate personality and are uncontrollable."
"It's alright; we'll treat them as animals," General Ross declares. "I plan to create some Lizard people using death row inmates; they possess excellent combat abilities."
"Is that so?" Norman hesitates before nodding. "Alright, but Osborn Industries will not admit to this. We'll claim that the formula has been lost."
"No problem, Norman. I hope you won't disappoint me," General Ross says.
"Rest assured, this time, I won't fail," Norman firmly declares. He is running out of time and needs to inject himself with the human enhancement serum as soon as possible; otherwise, he will die.
Furthermore, Osborn Industries' recent performance has been dismal, and Norman needs military contracts to secure his position as chairman. Otherwise, those vampire-like shareholders will abandon him without hesitation.
"It's a pity I couldn't find Banner; otherwise, I wouldn't have needed to collaborate with Osborn Industries," General Ross thinks to himself and sighs. "What Iron Man, what Spider-Man? They're not worth mentioning in front of the Hulk, only the Ghost Rider stands a chance."

In a shabby little hut in Siberia, a scarred-faced, wild-looking long-haired man lifts a newly constructed Arc Reactor and proudly exclaims, "What Tony Stark can do, I can do too."
"Ivan, you are even more brilliant than Tony," a bald bearded man named Obadiah Stane claps excitedly.
"The Stark family are a bunch of thieves; they stole everything from my family," Ivan Vanko declares angrily. "While the Stark family indulges in luxury and extravagance in America, we, suffer in Siberia. I must settle the score with Tony Stark."
"Be careful," Obadiah warns. Seeing Ivan carelessly throwing the Arc Reactor aside, he nearly has a heart attack. Seriously, that's a nuclear reactor. If it explodes, he will be the most miserable villain in existence.
Obadiah inwardly curses, "These Russians are so rough and careless."
