Chapter 27: The Device
Commissioner George Stacy arrived at Times Square, accompanied by the ESU SWAT team, to address the grave situation at hand. The formidable presence of the SWAT team compelled the Lizardmen to hide and avoid confrontation.
The Lizardmen's temporary retreat was partially due to their depletion of the serum they relied on. A single vial of serum possessed the potential to decimate the entire SWAT team effortlessly.
While commanding near his police car, Commissioner George Stacy suddenly heard his daughter Gwen's voice calling out to him, "Dad."
George turned to see Gwen rushing towards him. Anxious and angered by her presence in such a dangerous situation, he urged her to move away, saying, "Gwen, what are you doing here? Quickly, get to safety."
"Dad."
Gwen reached George's side and presented him with a vial containing a blue serum, explaining, "I have the antidote here. It can revert the Lizardmen back into their human form."
"Is that true?"
George's face lit up with joy as he eagerly accepted the serum, inquiring about the quantity, "How much of this serum do you possess?"
"Just one vial."
Gwen felt a tinge of embarrassment. Believing that their only adversary was Dr. Connors, she had prepared only a single vial of the serum. She continued, "Osborn Industries possesses a Device, which had the capability to generate a city-wide mist of the serum through the Device. With its help, a single vial of serum could restore all the Lizardmen to their original human state."
"That's excellent news."
George's elation was evident as he returned the serum to Gwen. He instructed the captain of the SWAT team beside him, "Accompany her to Osborn Industries with two team members and employ that device to release the serum mist."
"Yes, sir," promptly responded the captain of the SWAT team.
Gwen advised, "Dad, using the Device requires permission from City Hall. The city officials consider it too risky."
"Ignore their concerns and utilize it immediately. I will shoulder any consequences that arise."
George's decisive tone conveyed his willingness to take responsibility. As a commissioner, his position had been earned through competence and notable achievements.
"Be careful, Dad."
Gwen expressed her admiration for her father and entered the car with the SWAT team captain, heading towards Osborn Industries.
Once Gwen departed, Howard and a group of robots emerged. Mistaking the black armor for Iron Man's presence, the Lizardmen promptly hurled a nearby car at Howard.
"Now I won't even need to provoke them."
Howard smirked, revealing a large axe hidden behind him. With a powerful swing, he cleaved the car in half, sending the wreckage flying in different directions. Shouting loudly, Howard charged towards the Lizardmen.
The robots abstained from combat, instead attending to the injured and afflicted individuals caught in the crossfire. They promptly gathered those who had been ensnared by contracts and transported them outside. One man, whose body had already developed scales, complained, "Why didn't you save me?"
"America is a capitalist society. In this society, one must pay a price to obtain anything. That is common knowledge," responded a robot coldly. They proceeded to rescue dozens of contractees and administered the antidote, swiftly restoring them to their normal human state.
The contractees expressed their jubilation, some even shedding tears of relief. Unaware of the events that transpired, they were simply grateful for their newfound safety.
Rebirth Hell's services never failed to deliver.
Similar scenes unfolded in other areas affected by the Lizardmen, rapidly increasing the number of souls acquired by Rebirth Hell.
Meanwhile, at the S.H.I.E.L.D. substation, Coulson exclaimed, "Director, we have located Dr. Connors. He is engaged in battle with Spider-Man near Osborn Industries."
"Spider-Man? Switch the feed immediately."
Nick Fury requested with astonishment, swiftly ordering the switch. Soon, the screen displayed footage of Spider-Man struggling against the Dr. Lizard. Unlike their previous encounter, Spider-Man clearly found himself at a disadvantage, being flung around by the Dr. Lizard.
"Has Dr. Connors grown larger?"
Nick Fury inquired skeptically. During their prior encounter, Dr. Connors had stood at a modest height of three meters, but this time, he evidently exceeded four meters in stature.
"It appears so. His power has intensified," confirmed Coulson with a serious expression. Over time, the Dr. Lizard have evolved by nourished himself with the blood of numerous lesser vampires, significantly augmenting his strength.
However, this evolution came at a cost. The Dr. Lizard's body was gradually transforming into that of a vampire, and soon he would entirely relinquish his own soul, metamorphosing into a mystical creature.
After pondering for a moment, Nick Fury determined, "Dr. Connors must be heading to Osborn Industries. Investigate his motive for going there."
Coulson swiftly delved into the available information and after a brief moment, his expression changed. He reported, "It's the Ganali Device. Dr. Connors' objective is the Ganali Device."
Having perused the information regarding the Ganali Device, Nick Fury's expression also shifted dramatically. He swiftly relayed the crucial information to Iron Man, emphasizing, "We must halt Dr. Connors; otherwise, the consequences will be unimaginable."
"I'm en route."
Iron Man repelled the Lizardmen obstructing his path with his repulsor beams. Activating the thrusters in his boots, he swiftly soared towards Osborn Industries. The Lizardmen attempted to pursue, but a group of robots intercepted them.
...
The original vampire, Dracula, was the progenitor of all vampires, possessing the concept of absolute immortality. He had arrived in North America centuries ago and left behind a colossal altar.
This altar stood on the outskirts of New York City. At present, everyone believed that Deacon Frost had already reached the altar. Simultaneously, the twelve Pureblood Elders and Blade had also been relocated there.
"The humans who have been monitoring me probably believe I am on my way. Little do they know that the person speaking on my behalf is a mere decoy."
Deacon Frost sneered, "How could I be oblivious to the humans' machinations? They seek our annihilation, while we yearn for theirs. Alas, they remain clueless about the true might of our vampire race. To them, the so-called Blood God is likely a laughable notion."
Mercury chimed in, "They are unaware that the very joke they perceive has the potential to eradicate humanity."
"Let us commence. I shall sacrifice the twelve Pureblood Elders and offer Blade as the ultimate tribute to become the supreme Blood God."
Standing at the center of the altar, Deacon Frost shouted exuberantly. Mercury fervently nodded in agreement and secured the twelve Pureblood Elders to twelve pillars.
The Pureblood Elders cursed, "You will be our undoing, Deacon Frost. You will bring ruin upon the entire vampire race."
"No, I shall elevate the vampire race to become the rulers of Earth."
Deacon Frost raised his hands high, his excitement palpable. Simultaneously, above the altar, Blade, confined within a coffin by his mother (Deacon's consort), bled profusely. The blood cascaded along the ritual formation's intricate patterns, seeping into the altar below.
The ritual had commenced in earnest.
Outside the altar, a robot named Whistler advanced towards the sacred site, bearing a silver sword on his back. The vampires guarding the entrance were astounded by his presence and incredulously questioned, "What in the world is this?"
"This is a vengeance machine returned from the depths of hell."
Whistler grinned, raising his left hand. A silver sphere launched from his palm, exploding in mid-air and releasing a myriad of silver needles that pierced the bodies of dozens of vampires.
The vampires stared at him in disbelief before disintegrating into ash.
"High-tech. I love this body."
Whistler laughed heartily, forcefully kicking open the doors of the altar and striding inside.
