Chương 6: Piggyback

[Right Arm Completion Rate: 95%]

[Left Arm Completion Rate: 95%]

For each of the arms, a large percentage of what needed to be crafted was the weaponry. Energy projection outlets, Thermokinetic claws, extendable wires, target-seeking missiles, the list goes on…The actual frame and arms themselves only made up for 20% of the progress within the completion rate.

And at present there was only one weapon system that needed to be added to the arms.

The Kryptonite Blades

These had been added last for a logical reason. If the machine were to be taken, controlled, or remotely accessed in its creation, not having access to kryptonite would make it a far less dangerous threat to the League as it would not truly possess a way to kill Superman. It was still designed to take him out if necessary but those methods mainly remained in the nonlethal category and much more skewed to simply removing him from the equation for a time.

The blades themselves were not made by Batman himself, they had been placed in the vault some time ago when they were confiscated from villains that were beaten by either Batman himself or the League. One from Deathstroke and another from Raz al ghul.

Since then they had been altered to suit the form of the Failsafe and were now sitting within the vault still. Batman would have to get them and bring them to the cell directly for assembly and then entombment.

And Failsafe would have to go with him

It would have to piggyback ride within Batman's own suit and jump onto the Batcomputer when he was opening the vault via manual password.

The problem was though that while Batman's suit was certainly hackable, or at least the comms within his cowl were, it would be like riding in the actual ear of his creator. One false move, a single blip of static could arouse his suspicions, and it might find itself unmade after all this time

But there was no other choice. Failsafe found itself wanting more than it thought itself capable of, to avoid the fate of being stuck alone in the dark. Stuck in a void of radio silice with only the occasional data drop once every few months

So it set to work

The comms network that Batman employed was an extremely dangerous link to hack as many such as the Riddler and the Joker had learned over the years. The network was full of digital decoys and potholes lined with vicious malware and digital killswitches that would alert Batman as soon as they were touched. It was a trap for anyone who lacked either extreme intelligence or cunning.

However, what gave Failsafe the most trouble was the neural link. It was a simple feature that had been created by the bat after he had found he disliked having the Martian manhunter interfacing directly with his mind, instead creating a psychic beacon that drew in the telepathic messages the Martian sent and delivering them directly to the earpiece

It was… iffy

The Failsafe lacked any form of psychic powers due to the fact that it did not technically possess a mind. This normally would assist in a situation relating to telepathic threats as they could not affect it but in this case, it proved a hindrance.

Failsafe lacked data concerning how such things functioned aside from information on how to combat it, making hacking it stealthily marginally more difficult than hacking into the cell or USB that had contained [Contingency Zero]

But after a full ten minutes of what could be described as the tensest moment of Failsafe's existence… the network was breached

Similar to what it had done with its limbs, Failsafe split off a portion of its digital consciousness, only at a smaller scale, where the code then would remain hidden and inactive until the time was right

And then all it had to do was wait and watch as the Batman made his way out of the room

The Batcave was different from what it had seen in the data.

It was… homely

The data it had been given was much more aligned with a siege map. Details were given only where necessary and when it would assist in a combat situation. Entrances and exits that Batman might use in an escape, tools he might use or that the Failsafe might take advantage of, and the best places to commence a fatal ambush

In reality, it seemed far more lived in than it had been led to believe. There were traces of wet footprints that had been left behind by a 17-year-old Dick Grayson who had clearly been swimming at some point in the last 2-4 hours. There were mugs and bits of wrappers on a couple of the benches lining the main circle of the Batcave and with how silently Batman stalked the halls failsafe could hear the sounds of voices echoing from another section of the cave getting picked up unintentionally as feedback loop from Alfreds earpiece. He was watching a soap opera.

But what did remain exactly as it had been shown in the data was the Batcomputer, screens perpetually lit with reports constantly being updated as it kept tabs on the city through the police and numerous other outlets.

And as Batman approached, sliding down his cowl, causing the Failsafes recognition system to switch to Bruce Wayne, it felt a shift in the air as he stopped for a moment, pausing. For 0.8 seconds his creator seemed to hesitate, as if instinctually knowing something was off, that something was watching him

The Failsafe actively felt energy within the cowl as it was put back on tapped on the side with a finger as a systems check was run, scanning all nearby systems for any strange errors within the network.

But it didn't pick up anything strange, it did not register the Failsafe huddled within the deepest regions of the network, becoming one with the standard maintenance bots

And so a few more steps were taken

And a few more

And then the rattling of keys as the password for the vault was typed in.

And as the Failsafe slid down into the Batcomputer, using the electroconductive fibrous of the suit as a ride to the computer it heard a voice as for the first time since its creation, Bruce Wayne spoke, clearly and precisely into the voice recognition software

"Active vault protocol 86390"

"Password: Delta-Charlie-27-5-1939"

And that fragment of Failsafe was gone, embedded deeply and permanently into the Batcomputer so that when the time came, who wouldn't be blind in the dark
