The silence in the cell was almost comforting after the intense conversation. But David, still sitting on the edge of the bunk, couldn't help but notice the tension in Robby, who seemed trapped in his own thoughts.
"So, what are you going to do with all of this?" David finally asked, breaking the silence.
Robby looked up, confused. "With what?"
"With what you did. With how you feel about it. Are you going to let it consume you or are you going to face it head-on?"
Robby sighed, resting his head against the wall. "How do you face something like that? There's no way to fix it. I don't even know if I want to try."
David raised an eyebrow. "Well, at least you should apologize when you get the chance to see the guy you hurt."
"Apologize?" Robby frowned, his tone defensive. "Why should I apologize? He was the one who got involved. If he hadn't done that, none of this would've happened."
David let out a dry laugh. "That sounds like a cheap excuse, man."
"It's not an excuse," Robby quickly retorted. "He got involved when he tried to stop the fight between my girlfriend, Sam, and… well, her boyfriend."
David couldn't help but laugh, a chuckle that echoed in the small cell. "Wait, wait. Are you telling me this whole mess was about girls?"
Robby crossed his arms, embarrassed. "Yeah… kinda."
David kept laughing. "Man, I thought I'd heard it all, but this… this is straight out of a soap opera. Two girls fighting, and you end up being the one who almost sent a guy to the hospital for life."
Robby tried to keep a serious face, but in the end, he let out a slight smile. "When you put it like that, it sounds ridiculous."
"Because it is," David said with a wide grin. "So, what happened? How did you get caught up in all that drama?"
Robby sighed, his tone growing darker. "The guy… Miguel. He kissed Sam, my girlfriend. And Tory, Miguel's new girlfriend, saw it. I don't know, I think she wanted revenge. I wasn't thinking clearly. It all got out of hand."
David nodded, processing what Robby was saying. "So, let me get this straight. His girlfriend was upset because this guy, Miguel, kissed your ex-girlfriend, who is now your girlfriend, and you got dragged into all of that until you kicked him down some stairs? Man, that sounds like a mess."
Robby shook his head, his voice filled with frustration. "It wasn't that simple. Miguel… he and I already had problems before. This just… made it worse."
David leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms. "And what did you learn from all this?"
Robby looked at him, confused. "What?"
"There's always something to learn, even from the worst situations. What did you take away from this disaster?"
Robby remained silent for a moment, looking down at the floor. Finally, he murmured, "I guess… I can't let my emotions control me. If I had stayed calm, none of this would've happened."
David nodded, satisfied. "That's an important lesson. Though, you could also learn to stay out of other people's love drama."
Robby chuckled lightly. "Yeah, that too."
The conversation shifted to lighter topics after that. David began talking about his life before the correctional facility, stories that ranged from funny to sad.
"And that scar?" Robby asked, pointing to the mark on David's face.
David ran a finger along the edge of the scar, as if recalling the memory. "Ah, this. Let's just say I learned the hard way that not every day is a good day in the ring."
"Ring?"
"Yeah. Before all this, I was into MMA. Specializing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I loved it, man. It was my way of staying grounded, of getting everything out of me."
Robby looked at him curiously. "What happened?"
David sighed, his tone growing more serious. "One day, I was with my mom. We were coming out of the supermarket, and this guy showed up. He wanted money… but also wanted more. When I saw him threatening my mom, something inside me snapped. I took him down before he could do anything, but…"
He paused, looking for the right words. "I didn't measure it. It was pure instinct. I hurt him way more than I meant to. He barely survived, and even though it was self-defense, the police said I used excessive force."
Robby nodded slowly, understanding a little more why David was there. "Do you regret it?"
David shrugged. "Not for protecting my mom. But yeah, for losing control. It's a tough balance, you know? Being strong enough to defend yourself, but wise enough to know when to stop."
The two boys sat in silence for a moment, each processing their own experiences.
"Do you think I can fix what I did?" Robby finally asked.
David looked at him, his expression serious. "That depends on you. But start by accepting what you did, and if you get the chance, talk to Miguel. Even if he doesn't forgive you, at least you'll have tried to do the right thing."
Robby nodded, thinking about David's words. Maybe, just maybe, there was a way to start fixing his mistakes.
