"My mother has been terribly sick." she said in between heavy tears. 

"You could have come to me."

"I was scared she would die and lady Martha offered to pay. I needed the money that very day to get her the drugs she needed. Her body has been rejecting the blood."

Blood rejection syndrome. 

Kieran knew it quite well. It was one of the few ailments that could kill vampires. But he also knew the maid was lying. "Mabel, do you wish for death so much that you would lie to your king?"

She gasped. She shook even more. The fear within her had tripled. He would kill her. 

Kieran was in front of her in the second it took her to blink. 

She saw him raise his hands and braced herself for the hit but instead he pushed her dark hair behind her ears.
