Chương 12: 12 - Mortal Body Damage

I pushed the door and ran. The tapestry walls were so narrow it prevented me from moving my limbs freely. I had to run with my arms stuck to my torso, in a ridiculous and inefficient position.

It was an opérette. Of course, they wouldn't have that much space. Fuck!

Doors laid against the walls but opening them would show where I was hiding from the one chasing me. Why do you ask? Because she was here already.

The Boss's clacking steps were slow, so slow it sounded like she was walking. Out of fear and curiosity, I turned my head, hoping to catch a glimpse of the terrifying monster after me. And I saw.

She was indeed walking. She knew I was screwed.

I made my body run so much today I could taste blood in my shaky breath. Before me, a trolley covered with a white sheet was there. A flower vase sat on it. I licked the salty sweat above my lip.

I pressed my hands on the table and jumped above it. The vase put on it didn't throw away the water nor the flowers inside. But a huge Teddy Bear rolled on the floor.

"Yoh Song-ho…" Her voice made my back shiver.

After her intervention, I heard bass resounding in the hallway. Was that the pitiful dancers blasting music, or was that the tangible terror of the furniture? Wow, even for mere furniture, she imposed her large presence.

I ran until I was at the end of the hallway, and I hit the door. It was closed; I should know better. The conflict never ends without effort in movies.

Our steps stopped. I hid behind the cart. The music made the opposite door dance in rhythm, and the constant pounding turned off and on the neon lights above.

"You read the letter. You know what happens to the disobedient employees."

"I had to go." I grabbed the sheet as if it was an unbreakable wall, "You...you're a degenerate, you deserve the same treatment you did to the corporal!"

She did not react. Her eyebrow didn't even budge, "You ungrateful brat. You have a lot of nerves, talking to me like this after I saved you from certain death. But it doesn't matter if you understand or not. I want you on my team."

I shook my black curls as I refused her offer, "I don't want to!"

"You shouldn't waste your abilities. You are talented." The sound of her footsteps came closer.

"I just want a normal life. Is it too much to ask for? Living my dreams without being threatened to die again and again?" My tears left the corners of my eyes, "I never wanted to be born there. I never wanted this Revolution!"

There was a pause before she shrugged her shoulders, "Too bad. I wanted to make an exception for you if you obediently followed me but... You know what'll happen next." She ran toward me.

My hands shook on the sheet. The sheet...the trolley! I pushed the trolley on her, "Leave me alone!"

The vase fell on the ground, and gravity broke it into tiny little pieces. Meanwhile, the trolley flew above the top of the wall, ready to smash my attacker.

She returned, I don't know-how, the kinetic energy of the flying trolley back to me.

I somersaulted, letting the cart hit the door. And it hit it hard. The Boss threw it so well the cart stayed up in the air, inside the metal door. It was like she just played darts.

How strong was she?

"Interesting escape technique. You are a rival in this domain." She put her hand in her pocket and took a gun out, "Try to avoid this." She shot.

I threw myself on the ground. The bullet pierced through the poor door again, "Why are you testing us like this?"

"I need to be sure of what you are made of. You know, the majority of interesting people I look over doesn't survive the two tests. But you did, and you are gold. You're the rare diamond in a sea of unworthy gems." She turned the magazine, and a golden capsule fell on the ground, "Honestly, you're my favorite. And your little escape is breaking my heart since you become rarer every time you avoid a shot."

She was...enjoying this? My brain shouted at me to leave. She wasn't normal, "Help me..." My voice came out from my sore throat...

She aimed at my head, and smiled her pearly white smile, even though it had a dark meaning, "Become even rarer for me."

She drew her fingers near to the trigger. A piece of broken vase laid on the carpet. I took it and threw it on her face.

She let out a small cry of pain as the small blade pierced her face.

She covered her head with her hands. Soon enough, red pearls rolled on her hands.

I didn't think... I didn't mean to do it: she forced me to!

I had to neutralize her. Regrets would be dealt with later. I grabbed the sheet on the trolley and sighed, "Sorry girls, I'll buy you brand new pieces of furniture."

The Boss kneeled and strived to remove one by one the glass on her forehead. Her knees were stuck in the ground.

Alright, I shouldn't fail here. I threw the sheet on her. It should confuse her while I go out of here.

I ran toward the door. It was so damaged I could open it. I pushed the knob then I stopped. I was going...where? I wasn't going to let her rest before she came to chase me again.

I could fly from her at every meeting, but each loss would promise another battle.

I turned around. Her body was staying still under the white sheet. I swallowed and came closer to the Boss. I threw myself on her, "It's finished. Come with me to the police station, and you'll confess everything. I can't let you harm us any longer."

I tightened my grip on her arms, but she wasn't resisting. It didn't look like she was breathing either. A surge of panic overwhelmed me. She couldn't be...

With my right hand, I raised the sheet with care.

The Teddy Bears' black balls stared at me, "What?"

My back shivered again. Impossible…

I turned my head around and saw, above me, a smiling spider, "Rare, so rare. You will join me."

She had her legs, with ripped tights, pressed against each wall. Her body hid the flashing neon lights.

She aimed at me again. The gunpowder smell got in my nostrils.

No, I don't want this!

I took her leg and pulled her on the ground while the gun slid farther from her.

Without thinking, I grabbed it.

She got up, and when she saw me with her 44 Magnum, she stepped back until her back hit the door.

My heart skipped a beat. I had the power. I had the power to make her disappear from my life.

I squizzed it tight and aimed the barrel at her, "You're are nothing but a monster."

She tried to step back, "You don't know how to use it."

"You knew what we lived through in North Korea and knew how much we suffered. Not only us but all of those people you 'saved'. Still, you thought of your interest," I inflated my lungs, and adrenaline flew in my veins, "You won't have it, Madam, because you don't deserve to live."

She lowered her head and articulated slowly each of her words, "Give this weapon back to me."

"I won't."

She raised an eyebrow, "Okay. I'm counting down to three," She made a step toward me, watching over my movements, "Three..." She raised her left arm in the air and handed me the other one "Two... Song-ho, I won't repeat myself a third time."

"One!" I closed my eyes and shot her.

For a millisecond, the gunshot shut down any bass music on the opérette, and a cold wind licked my cheeks. The gun threw me back.

After the flood of sensations, silence came. I opened my eyes. The door was now wide open, and the body of the Boss slid the slop hid behind the door. She then fell in the Seine, the river of this city.

She was dead. I killed her.

My face was burning hot. I touched my cheeks and discovered blood splatters. Hers. I wasn't a murderer! It was her fault! I glanced at the weapon in my right hand.

I threw it in the river.

I got quickly in the hallway. Nobody came yet. I couldn't stay here without doing anything. If they come, they'd know what I did and won't accept me in their group!

No, I won't ruin my chance to realize my dream. I will clean the place before the dancers come.
