Her words struck Vix like a slap in the face, bringing her back to earth. “So, we’ll be safe from bumping into other witches, here?”
“As safe as you can be in Nostrom,” Mirra responded. “I know a place deep in the Arboretum where nobody goes. You can wait there for me while I try and figure out what’s happening – why the Mother Illumine wants you and why Illumine Cassidy tried to kill you.”
“So we’re just supposed to sit on our hands until then?” Caine asked.
“We’ve gone over this before; it’s the only way,” Mirra said. “Besides, without a disguise, you won’t get far.”
Vix realized she was right. Caine looked like himself once more; his disguise had vanished. She looked down at her body and found that she too had returned to normal.
“I let myself get distracted by... this,” Vix said, gesturing to the huge trees surrounding them. A hot wave of frustration rolled over her. “Two minutes in, and I’m already making mistakes.”
