Chương 1: Consequences

My entire life, all I had ever wished for was to be free. Free to roam to new places and discover new things. Free to choose where I wanted to live. Free to choose who I wanted to love. People were not meant to be herded like cattle and stripped of their personalities.

And so... I escaped.

My lungs were heaving, legs as heavy as lead as I ran through the dark forest. I could hear branches cracking behind me, renewing the fear in my veins. I couldn't go back there. Not to that place. Pushing through my fatigue, I jumped over a fallen tree and kept running. It was so dark in the forest, the moon covered by dense clouds. I found myself concentrating on not falling in the darkness. I heard one of the men crash as he tripped up on the same log I just cleared. They're so close. Heat pumped through my body as I pushed myself further. And yet, unfortunately, my newfound adrenaline was short lived and a burning filled my limbs, slowing me considerably. The second assailant wrapped his hand around my scrawny bicep, yanking me backwards. I dug my heels into the ground, yelping. My arm screaming in protest as I struggled futilely to escape his grip. A sharp pain in the base of my skull halted my actions, my tired legs finally giving out. My whole body ached as I fell into the man's arms. He hooked me under my armpits and lifted me over his shoulder. I swayed against his back helplessly, tears pricking my eyes as everything faded to black and I lost consciousness.

Bright white filled my eyelids, waking me from my forced slumber. My head and shoulders throbbed in time with the beating of my heart. An attempt to rub the offending area alerted me to the restraints around my wrists and ankles. I was fully awake now, panic setting in. I yanked at the restraints, the plastic cutting into my skin. A whine erupted from the back of my throat.

"Don't waste your time." A familiar chilling voice whispered in my ear. The hair stood up on the back of my neck, chills running down my spine. She stepped slowly around my chair, heels clicking through the bare cement room. My breathing hitched as she stopped in front of my chair. I squinted at her, recoiling as she blocked the light. As my eyes adjusted, I could see her standing stiff and straight like a statue with her tightly wound blonde hair piled into a clip on the back of her head. She stood facing away from me for what felt like forever before finally turning around.

"Did you think you'd make it?" She said in her monotone voice. She bent to my level and held eye contact with me for a moment. I started right back into her dead looking steel eyes, fighting the urge to spit on her.

"You look like a trapped animal. Eyes crazy, trying to escape. You're a disgrace." She stood back up and smoothed her skirt with her long bony fingers. "Joth, come get her." She called.

Her right-hand man entered the side door, in some old military clothes. An upgrade from his old uniform. I hate that man. He hooked his arm behind my back and lifted me up, chair and all, and took me through the door.

Down the dark hallway we went, my body jostling to match his walking pace. Then he took me into the stairwell in the middle of the hall and walked us down a flight of stairs. I realized in horror that he was taking me to the basement. Fear kick-started my body once more and I began to struggle against the chair, trying to break free of my bonds. Joth continued to hold me up, stoically until we reached the bottom of the stairs. Then he simply let me go and I dropped hard on my side. My head hit the cement floor, disorienting me once again. He cut my free from the chair and pulled me over to a pair of shackles hanging from the wall. I tried desperately to regain my senses as he hoisted me to my feet and locked me in by my wrists. I hung there for a moment breathing hard.

"Well. Are you going to speak?" He asked softly, stepping on either side of my legs and placing his hands on the wall by my head. He waited patiently for my answer, yet I remained silent.

"Why did you run away? So that I could find you and claim you as mine once more?" He leaned in close, lips grazing my cheek. He breathed gently on my skin and moved slowly down into the crook of my neck.

"You are mine. You always will be. You know it, and so do I." He kissed below my ear, pressing against my dirty shackled body. I stiffened and tried to move away. He chuckled and took a step back from me. "Don't worry sweetheart, I'll be back to give you a bath later." A lump formed in my throat as he leaned in again.

"I'll make sure I get every inch of you." He lifted my face up and I struggled to keep my eyes on the floor, beginning to hyperventilate. He leaned in close, his stale breath fanning on my face. I squeezed my eyes shut and he pressed his chapped lips against mine roughly. He kissed me for a moment, pressing his slimy tongue on my lips. I fought against his hand to move my face away until he stopped. He moved back slowly, as if offended. Mistake. Without batting an eyelash, he brought his hand back and slapped me. My face felt hot, stinging harshly where his hand had connected. I wanted to cry- to let everything out, but I bit my lip and continued to stare at the floor.

"You will come to me, you little whore." He turned and left back up the stairs, stomping and flexing his hands angrily. I watched him until he was gone, and then let my body go limp. Defeat filled my heart, tears tracing dirty tracks down my cheeks.
