“Are you sure you want to go alone? I could have a security detail escort you.” Garfield’s voice was filled with concern, and even though I still had my reservations about accepting his kindness because I was still technically deceiving him, I couldn’t help but feel warm whenever he treated me like family. “Or I could go with you myself.”

Since the end of the trial, I’d been looking for ways to celebrate being free of Eric, and my first thought was to go back and visit the Welfare Institution. It’d been a while since I’d last been there, and now that I had extra money, I couldn’t think of anything better to spend it on.

I smiled at him. “I’ll be okay, Uncle. I promise. I want to do this on my own. Besides, having a posse of scary men following me might scare the little kids.”
