45.23% an Average Day for an Average Dragon / Chapter 19: Ray's Research

Chương 19: Ray's Research

It was a few days after arriving back at the capital, and Ray had already switched back to soldier life, with one minor difference. He would spend all of his free time in the library, looking for clues on a relic.

Every morning he would wake up in the barracks at dawn, grab some bread for breakfast then go to the training grounds, where the other soldiers would attack him 2 or 3 at a time. After that he would guard the outer walls until the afternoon. However, instead of returning to the barracks, he would go to the library until the evening, rushing back to the barracks to get some broth before going to bed.

Ray was, once again, reading in the library when he finally came across a clue in the diary of Uzanior, who was supposedly the greatest human wizard of all time. He finalised the concept of inscribing magic arrays into objects for easy use, before suddenly disappearing. However, it was known that he travelled into the domain of a King teir dragon, so no further investigations were sent. After remembering every important figure in history that Ray could think of, he concluded that finding the remains of Uzanior would be his best chance at locating a relic, which goes to show just how rare they are. The diary entry was as follows:

...I have discovered a strange phenomena, there are huge currents of pure natural energy flowing inside the earth (For future reference, I shall call them 'dragon veins'). If I could somehow access them, I could gain unlimited magical energy for any task I want. However, it is no simple feat to use this energy, let alone access it. From my travels I have discovered that at locations were the dragon veins overlap. At all of these locations, monsters were stronger on average. However, different intersections are different 'depths' from the surface, 'deep' intersections would have less impact on the surroundings, and be harder to exploit. Luckily, I found an intersection very close to the surface near Ullder lake in the forest near Lostfall that I should be able to utilize. My creation of magic array inscription could be the key to dragon vein energy, as energy within dragon veins is too powerful to channel it into myself. I can also predict that vein energy will quickly disperse when it is pulled out of the dragon vein, so I cannot store it, so any spell that I need to do must be completed near a dragon vein intersection.

...

I have finally decided on what I shall use this power to do, and that is to create a weapon like no other. If I could wield even a fraction of the dragon vein's power, I would be invincible. However, I will have to gather materials that can withstand the primal mana, or all my effort will be for nought. However, I know just the thing to use - dragon material.

Another thing I discovered on my travels is that most intersections are home to dragons, and that these dragons all have one thing in common - they eat less than dragons in other places. I suspect this is because that dragons have the ability to convert some of the vein's mana into their own energy. From observing a few examples, I have concluded that the higher the rank of dragon, the more energy they can take from dragon veins. Therefore, the best material to use would be a King rank dragon's bones and hide.

Ray did not immediately recognize the name Lostfall, so he looked through some old maps. Much to his surprise, Lostfall had not been destroyed, but only renamed to Blacksummit after a lone mountain grew in the nearby forest over a month. The peculiar growth of that mountain drew many researchers into the forest, few of which returned. Those that did return did not give any comment to the general public, which only made the citizens more confused. 'I wonder what I will find inside that mountain?' Ray thought, excitement evident in his eyes. It was very likely that Blacksummit mountain was the final resting place of Uzanoir, and the location of his last spell. Even if all he got was a staff, he could give it to Ellie or Lexie to boost their combat power. He would travel to Blacksummit as soon as he could, and claim a powerful relic. His mind made up, he returned to the barracks for that night's serving of stew.

3 days after he discovered Uzanoir's diary, he was called back to the imperial palace. When he arrived, he noticed that Ellie and Pexie were waiting at the front gate as well. "What are you do doing here?" Ray asked as he approached the entrance.

"Same as you, dummy," Ellie responded, "We were summoned by the emperor."

As soon as she finished, the gates opened and they were welcomed into the palace.

The group was led to the emperor's throne room, where they knelt before the emperor. "You may stand. Your next assignment is simple, you will split up and travel to towns near the border to the demon country. Recently, tensions have been rising and this will lessen the pressure felt by those most at risk. While you are there, you must take part in any large scale monster elimination. You can choose between these three towns," Gustav motions and a butler unrolled a map on an expensive looking octagonal table. It shows the south side of the continent in great detail, lakes, rivers, mountains, forests, grasslands, and towns are all represented. To the north of the border, the only thing were the words 'Demon country'. Similarly, to the west of the human empire were many forests and mountains, but they had never been fully explored, so it was blank. The butler was pointing to the three towns closest to the border; Blacksummit in the north west, Rosewater near the middle, and Stormrest near the east coast.

"Emperor, I wish to go to Blacksummit." Ray answered almost immediately. He couldn't believe how lucky he was, he would get sent to his relic so soon!

"I shall go to Stormrest." Ellie said decisively.

Not giving Lexie the chance to speak, the emperor said "Then it is decided. Carriages will be prepared for tomorrow morning. Do not be late."
