Chương 20: Chapter 18: The Three Dogs Slaying Immortal Formation

"Damn it, where the hell did this guy go?"

Xiao Jie drew his sword and looked all around but still saw no trace of either 'I Want to Be Immortal' or a body.

He glanced toward the distant forest, wondering if that guy might have wandered off somewhere far.

Not far away, a wild dog gnawing on a corpse suddenly caught Xiao Jie's attention.

He had already killed three of these creatures. They seemed a lot weaker than the Lost Soul Mountain Bandits in terms of combat power, though it could also be because he had gotten stronger.

A wild dog gave about a dozen or so experience points, forty-something for three, which felt much easier than killing mountain bandits.

He slowly approached the wild dog, which desperately retreated in a circle and then suddenly lunged forward.

Unfazed, Xiao Jie adeptly swung his sword, and with a flash of the blade, the wild dog collapsed to the ground with a mournful howl.

Too bad it didn't drop as much as a single hair.

Huh? What's this... Xiao Jie looked at the corpses on the ground, some of which bore clear sword wounds. This must have been 'I Want to Be Immortal's' handiwork.

The other guy must have been here and killed plenty of creatures.

After surveying the surroundings for a while, knowing he had come from the southeast and with a cliff to the west, he could only head north.

Xiao Jie looked to the northern woods, which seemed much denser and more dangerous than the sparse forest around him.

Damn, this guy really can't be left alone.

Forget it, I'll look for five more minutes; if I don't see him, I'm leaving.

————————

At this very moment, 'I Want to Be Immortal' had completely ignored his surroundings, focused solely on one target—the pick-up little monster.

Although he wasn't as fast as that thing, he had a bow and arrow in hand.

Whoosh! An arrow shot out, flying straight over the head of the pick-up little monster, which in turn looked back at him and chattered angrily before turning to run deeper into the forest.

Damn! That aim was awful.

'I Want to Be Immortal' was furiously incompetent, without a Skill's boost, the aim of the bow was terribly erratic, and hitting something was purely down to luck.

But he still refused to give up. If he killed it, it would drop a bunch of good stuff. Maybe he could even learn a Spell, become stronger, and then save his brother.

The obsession in his heart drove him to accelerate again. The pick-up little monster leaped and sprinted faster and farther through the trees. 'I Want to Be Immortal' chased after a while, and the surroundings gradually darkened. But at this moment, consumed by eagerness, he only thought about nabbing this newbie gift pack, unwilling to let go.

Suddenly, the view before him opened up as he burst out of the forest to come upon a broken road dotted with mangled corpses. Several emaciated, mangy wild dogs surrounded one of the bodies, devouring it eagerly.

The pick-up little monster was hiding behind the wild dogs on top of a large rock, looking over with a mocking smirk.

Seeing the wild dogs, 'I Want to Be Immortal', heated from the chase, quickly cooled down. He remembered a tip from the guide: a lone wild dog wasn't much of a threat, but a pack of them was extremely dangerous. Thankfully, the dogs hadn't noticed him. Just as 'I Want to Be Immortal' was about to turn and leave, the pick-up little monster let out a sinister laugh and pulled a stone from its small bag, hurling it at the largest wild dog's head.

The dog instantly barked and raised its head, its blood-red eyes seemingly unable to see the pick-up little monster but instead turned to look directly at 'I Want to Be Immortal'.

Woof! A bark sounded, and the other two wild dogs also turned to look his way.

'I Want to Be Immortal' inwardly cursed, thinking, is the pick-up little monster really playing this trick?

He was a very decisive person. At this time, running away wasn't an option; two legs can't outrun four. It might be better to kill one quickly, making the remaining two easier to handle.

Drawing his bow and setting an arrow, he let it fly, though without a Skill to guide it, the shot was wildly off target, completely missing its mark.

'I Want to Be Immortal' didn't draw a second arrow because the three wild dogs had already charged toward him.

He quickly switched to sword and shield, charging at the nearest wild dog.

The beast instantly showed fear and tried to retreat hastily, allowing 'I Want to Be Immortal' to slash at empty air while the other two dogs flanked him from the left and the right. In the blink of an eye, the three dogs had trapped 'I Want to Be Immortal' in a triangle formation.

Before he could swing a second sword strike, the two dogs behind him attacked simultaneously.

Crunch, crunch.

-7! -8!

Thankfully, he wore armor, so the damage wasn't too high, but the dogs' pounce still made him stumble forward.

As he steadied himself, the one in front pounced again.

I Want to Be Immortal hurried to raise his shield in defense, blocking the claws of the dog in front of him.

But the two behind promptly followed up with another attack.

I Want to Be Immortal quickly turned around and swung his sword, but the one he struck immediately retreated, leaving him to take another bite.

He hurriedly tried to roll out of the encirclement, but the three wild dogs seemed to move in perfect sync, and after a couple of rolls, he was still surrounded. As soon as he stopped rolling, the three dogs jumped on him together.

Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch!

A flurry of bites took away a quarter of his health bar.

This is bad!

As I Want to Be Immortal watched his health bar drop, panic surged through him, his scalp tingling.

Am I really going to die here?

I've only just started playing this game.

While he thought this, he continuously attempted to break free, but the trio of wild dogs coordinated flawlessly. Whenever he attacked one, the other two would instantly launch a sneak attack, making it difficult for him to handle.

After several rounds, his health was gradually depleted. If he hadn't put 5 points into Constitution, he would have died long ago.

He hurriedly took out a bottle of golden sore medicine intending to drink it, but as he raised his hand, a wild dog fiercely pounced, biting him and interrupting his drinking.

It's over! A wave of despair washed over I Want to Be Immortal. It was only then that he realized that drinking potions in this game wasn't instantaneous, but involved an action of raising his hand to drink, requiring about a second to complete. During this time, any attack would interrupt the action.

Not only did he fail to regain health, but he also wasted a bottle of medicine.

Now, surrounded by the three wild dogs and under constant attack, it seemed he wouldn't get a chance to drink any of the blood bottles in his bag.

Could it be that his first day would end with death here?

The pick-up little monster cackled annoyingly on the side.

In his frustration, the wild dogs launched another flying pounce.

At this moment, I Want to Be Immortal was furious, lashing out with his sword mindlessly. He finally struck true!

Thud!

-19!

The wild dog, with only sixty health, took a hit for a third of its health, but it cost him two more bites.

Only a dozen or so health points remained.

The injured wild dog yelped and quickly drew back, when suddenly a figure appeared behind it.

One Cut, Two Pieces!

A flash of cold light, and the wild dog was silently cleaved in two.

Who else could it be but Xiao Jie?

Xiao Jie was speechless; this guy had run so far, and upon arrival was about to be killed by three wild dogs. He had insisted this morning on starting from the weakest creatures and working his way up, yet here he was, about to put on this dramatic scene on his very first day.

No wonder the death rate in this game is so high; if they're all as foolish as this, it's no surprise.
