I didn't know it would be such a struggle to stay focused making coffee all morning for the customers as they came in and through the drive-thru in such a rush. Before I took over Mrs. Stokes would help handle lead while managing drive-thru as well, she was a professional at beating the rush before ten in the morning. It is now almost eleven and we still are stringing out orders but I couldn't keep my mind off of Ashlyn for a split second every time I looked at her corner where she sat, I would smile and go back to working on the coffee.
"As much as you stare at her while working it is a wonder you haven't just left for a day together." Shayne said, making a suggestion.
"I couldn't leave you here to close this place and I don't think the other two co-workers would agree to their boss leaving for a whole day." I replied, fidgeting with my apron.
"Juliet, you are the fucking owner and we have no say what you can do as a boss. You can take a day off to unwind and get to know someone like her." Shayne responded while still making coffee.
I wouldn't hear of it from Shayne deciding it is best to stay with my co-workers and manage these hectic customer demands. It wasn't until lunch time that usually Shayne and I went together in my office, enjoying whatever it is we felt like having that day but instead Shayne made plans with her other best friend Ariel that scheduled somewhat of a date. Shayne usually didn't leave much detail of her dating life.
"Shayne, be back before two. We still have a long day ahead of us." I said loudly above the machines that were still running.
Shayne whispered something to Ariel then came up to me and glared.
"Close the shop and go with Ashlyn for a few days to get to know each other. Get out of the shop and do something exciting for once." Shayne said in a low frustrating voice.
I couldn't convince myself to go after Ashlyn as I watched her leave the shop and Ariel giving that pissed off look because of the argument between Shayne and I holding her back. Before I could say anything more to Shayne my phone went off.
Unknown: Hey, it's Ashlyn, thank you for the coffee and I will see you again tomorrow. Let's make plans for a date this weekend. I am intrigued to get to know you outside of small talk. Bye ♥ Ashlyn.
I couldn't help urgently saving her number. Unfortunately my shyness wouldn't let me respond to going out with her this weekend. The look Shayne gave me was a major warning then she left without any more words. I told the other two co-workers to clean up and close the shop because I am leaving for the rest of the day and I have left Shayne a text message saying that they are both not returning to work until Monday. I went into the office back behind the bathrooms as I heard the other two rush to get out of the coffee shop before I left. Though I had decided to stay in the shop a few more hours to catch up on anything that needed to be done but then my phone went off again.
Ashlyn: I know you are busy working with the coffee shop but I was honestly hoping you would respond by now for the date this weekend. It is Friday, we can catch a movie and have dinner if you would like. Hope to hear from you soon. Bye ♥ Ashlyn.
My awkwardness and shyness is getting the best of me. I ran my hands through my spiked blonde hair that had a short pixie cut to it. I didn't know how to take a woman interested in me when I am normally one to not even go out to reach my admirer. I took a deep breath with a heavy sigh behind it, I gave into texting a reply that left a rather stand offish awkwardness between them.
Juliet: Ashlyn, I'm not sure I am ready to jump the gun. My best friend Shayne set me up for this and...I am sorry. I want a friendship first if we can.
I debated on sending that to her but instead I have backtracked and deleted the message with no idea on how to handle a woman like her wanting to go out tonight. I finally finished adding up the totals from today's short day then began getting ready to leave the office to head up to my apartment but my phone went off one more time.
Ashlyn: Open the shop, I am right outside.
All I could think to myself is shit! She had to come back to me and now to face her. I walked out of the office, closing the door behind me, and then looked at the entrance to see Ashlyn standing there. I had no choice but to open the front door to the coffee shop. I took a deep breath, walking in stride and letting her inside.
"Thank you for letting me inside." Ashlyn said.
I had no words to speak so I just nodded my head. I wasn't expecting her to show up and now to try to talk to her is more awkward.
