"Hiss…"
"So strong! Truly, so strong!"
"No wonder he's the closest thing to a god… But with stats like this, why is he only ranked S-level?"
Yi Bai was stunned.
In the mechanism of the post-apocalyptic game, someone at Wang Shi's level—could only be ranked as an S-tier? Was there a higher rank? Were there even more powerful talent units out there? If so, just how terrifying would they be?
Yi Bai didn't dare to think about it any further. The human race on Earth, with its still underdeveloped technology—only just barely approaching a Level 1 cosmic civilization—couldn't even begin to imagine the immense scale and terrifying methods of even more advanced civilizations.
After reviewing Wang Shi's data, a golden, humanoid glow began to dissipate before him, revealing a towering figure—two meters tall—of a muscular man.
From his physique, Wang Shi appeared as a typical Asian man—broad-shouldered and imposing. His stance was straight, as though he were a tree weathered by time and storms, standing firmly before Yi Bai.
"Sir, hello."
Before Yi Bai could speak, Wang Shi's piercing gaze landed on him. His face was stoic, his tone commanding as he introduced himself: "My name is Wang Shi. I'm the squad leader of the First Team of the White Emperor Legion from the Seventeenth World of the Solar System's Earth Alliance. Reporting for duty."
Wang Shi's square-jawed face exuded a sense of ironclad resolve. His voice was firm, concise, with an unmistakable military air about it.
What surprised Yi Bai most was that Wang Shi had voluntarily revealed his background—something none of the previous talent units had done.
"Your background... Hm, it sounds a bit complicated."
Yi Bai wasn't sure what to say. As he pondered, Wang Shi seemed to sense his hesitation and spoke up.
"Sir, I am aware of everything that's happened here, and the mission I've been assigned."
Wang Shi's short, jet-black hair was neatly styled. When he spoke, there was a sharp, decisive quality to his eyes.
"This place is in the early stages of Earth's Judgment Apocalypse, a branch of the universe's landmark positions."
"In a sense, for you, I am a person from the future—more specifically, from a different Earth timeline."
"At the same time, I am a soldier, of the same human bloodline as your descendants and the people of your nation."
"Thanks to the Judgment mechanism's technology, I have been aware of most of the current situation since my arrival."
"But what I know isn't significantly more than you do. What you know, I know; what you don't, I don't."
Wang Shi's eyes were deep and bright as he continued to explain.
"Because of the advanced technology of the Judgment mechanism, I am currently unable to confirm if I am a copy of myself from a different timeline or my original self."
"I tend to lean toward the former, as if my memories haven't been altered, my original self should have recently been involved in the 1253rd Jupiter military exercise in the Solar System."
"Of course, sir, there's no need to worry about loyalty after recruitment."
"According to the Judgment mechanism's technological infusion, as long as you don't excessively harm or betray me, I am biologically unable to betray you or cause you harm in any way."
"You can think of it as a direct enhancement of my genetic code, making me naturally inclined to favor you. I cannot resist this."
"Furthermore, according to the constitutional regulations of the Solar System's Yanhuang Alliance: whenever a soldier encounters a situation where ordinary humans or their fellow countrymen are in need of rescue, they must provide military support unconditionally, to protect the lives and property of their fellow humans."
"Based on this constitution, you are a person I must protect, so I will be unconditionally loyal to you."
A faint smile appeared on Wang Shi's lips—a smile so mechanical that it almost seemed robotic. He appeared to be trying to reassure Yi Bai, who was still in a daze.
"Sir, is there anything else you'd like to know?"
"Uhh… I think I understand most of it now…"
Yi Bai blinked, a bit overwhelmed. Wang Shi had said a lot, but in such a straightforward, useful way that it was easy to follow.
Yi Bai wasn't a fool—he understood the gist. In summary: talent units might be copies of humans from different times or timelines, and they seemed to have a high level of loyalty and a natural inclination to favor their recruiters.
Once recruited, they arrived with basic knowledge of the world they entered, knowing exactly what they had to do.
Yet Yi Bai still felt a little dazed. In fact, it was more confusion than clarity. Wang Shi had answered so many questions that it only left Yi Bai with more.
"Squad Leader Wang… Um, can I call you that?"
"Absolutely."
"According to your introduction, your military should be somewhat similar to mine, right?" Yi Bai asked carefully. He wasn't sure if Wang Shi would understand the concept of 'military' given that they were from different time periods, and the armies of his time might not have even been called that.
"Yes." Wang Shi nodded briskly. "That's the direct predecessor of my army, the most basic form of our military."
"In my world, the military has undergone numerous reforms and optimizations, including name changes, but the core values remain the same."
"So, theoretically, sir, you can view me as a soldier, and some of my behavioral codes are indeed similar to the modern soldiers you're familiar with."
Wang Shi's explanation helped Yi Bai understand more clearly.
The military was his origin?
Well, that made sense!
Yi Bai nodded, thinking back to Wang Shi's earlier explanation. He was beginning to see the bigger picture. This guy might even be more of a "saint" than Lin Yue—though, of course, here "saint" wasn't a derogatory term. It meant a true hero willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good of their people.
"Hmm… I was looking over your data earlier, and it seems like… you've been modified? You're not a pure human, are you?"
Yi Bai was genuinely curious about Wang Shi—not just because he was willing to discuss matters beyond the current world but also due to his unique nature. Half-human, half-machine, a practitioner, and a special soldier? This guy had quite the story.
"I understand your confusion, sir." Wang Shi stood tall, straight as a rod, his military uniform—though resembling a camouflage suit—was slightly different in design, and the material was far superior to regular fabric. A small military knife hung at his waist.
"In your time, the concept of mechanical modification might just be emerging, but in mine, Earth has already entered a Level 3 civilization. Though there are laws prohibiting unauthorized modifications, I am part of the military's authorized enhancement program."
Wang Shi explained his legitimacy, emphasizing, "Sir, whether by legal standards or biological assessment, I am still a human, not a robot."
"No, no, I didn't mean to insult you. I'm just curious…" Yi Bai waved his hand, coughing softly and lowering his voice. "Why did you choose to modify yourself? Was it to become stronger?"
"Yes." Wang Shi nodded. "In my era, the Solar System has been at war with extraterrestrial civilizations for over three hundred years."
"To better defend the Solar System, we needed stronger and more advanced technology, including more formidable individual soldiers."
"An ordinary human body just couldn't survive in the complex, ever-changing battlefield of the cosmos."
Wang Shi paused briefly before speaking again, his voice distant and detached. "I had no choice. Behind me, there were the people I had to protect."
