Chapter 7: Facing the Truth
Alex's mind was reeling with questions and emotions. She felt betrayed by Ethan's lies, but at the same time, she was scared for his safety.
As she looked into Ethan's eyes, Alex saw the sincerity and fear reflected back at her. She knew that Ethan was telling the truth, and that he had been living in fear for his life.
"What happens now?" Alex asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan shrugged. "I don't know. I've been living in witness protection for so long, I'm not sure what it means to have a normal life."
Alex's heart went out to Ethan. She couldn't imagine living in fear for her life, constantly looking over her shoulder.
"We'll figure it out together," Alex said, taking Ethan's hand in hers.
Ethan smiled, a small, sad smile. "Thank you, Alex. Just knowing that you're here for me makes me feel better."
As they sat there, hands clasped, Alex knew that she had made the right decision. She would stand by Ethan, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
But as they sat there in silence, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced around the room, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
Still, the feeling persisted.
Suddenly, Ethan's phone rang, shrill in the silence. Ethan hesitated for a moment before answering.
"Yes?" he said, his voice cautious.
Alex watched as Ethan's expression changed from cautious to shocked.
"What is it?" Alex asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan's eyes locked on hers. "It's the marshal," he said, his voice low and serious. "He says that my cover has been blown."
Alex's heart skipped a beat. What did it mean that Ethan's cover had been blown?
And what would happen to them now?
Ethan's face was pale, his eyes wide with fear. Alex knew that she had to stay calm, for both their sakes.
"What does it mean?" Alex asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Ethan took a deep breath. "It means that the people I testified against have found me. They know where I am."
Alex's eyes widened in horror. What would happen to them now?
"We have to get out of here," Ethan said, his voice urgent. "We have to leave now."
Alex nodded, her heart racing with fear. She knew that they had to act fast, before it was too late.
As they quickly gathered their belongings, Alex couldn't shake off the feeling that they were running out of time. She knew that they had to find a safe place to hide, and fast.
But where could they go? And who could they trust?
As they made their way out of the apartment, Alex knew that their lives would never be the same again. They were in grave danger, and they had to fight to survive.
