Chương 31: Chapter 31: My Homework

Class teacher Gerald: "Tomorrow is the first day of school, don't forget to bring your homework! @Everyone"

Ethan stared at the message that popped up in the class group chat, which had been silent for nearly two months. He froze for a moment.

Looking at the bottom right corner of his computer screen, it was 22:31 on August 31, 2022. Ethan fell into deep thought.

He really wanted to search on the Psyduck encyclopedia for one question: [Is it too late to start making up homework at 10:30 PM the night before school starts?]

A scientific approach to this question concluded that, to determine if it's possible, it depends on the amount of homework.

Clearly, as someone with the soul of a corporate drone, the words "homework" had long disappeared from his dictionary, and naturally, he couldn't remember what his summer homework was.

Now, he had two choices: one was to ask a soul-searching question in the group chat, but that would likely get him a question mark from Gerald, or possibly a message saying, [You have been kicked out of the group chat].

The second option was to privately message his classmate Rosa, who was the class monitor, always ranked first in the grade, and his childhood friend. Rosa would probably let him copy her homework.

Ethan's choice was C: obtuse angle.

He pretended not to see the message, calmly walked to the bathroom to wash up, then lay back in bed, hugging Eevee to sleep.

Forgot to submit homework? Teacher's looking for trouble?

If you really want to call my parents, go ahead.

If you do manage to call them, I might even thank you.

His thick-skinned soul, more durable than even Steelix, knew no psychological burden as he closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.

Nothing to report through the night.

...

The next morning.

On September 1st, the morning sunlight was particularly bright, and despite not having done his homework, Ethan was in a good mood.

As usual, after a morning jog with Eevee, he had breakfast and greeted the ugly fish in his aquarium.

"We're going to school today, we won't be back until late. Do you want to come along?"

The ugly fish didn't care, as the energy absorption efficiency didn't change no matter where it was. The environment in the diving ball was fine, so it nodded.

After breakfast, Ethan reluctantly put Eevee into the Poké Ball and left the house.

Though his house was small and shabby, it had its advantages, such as being very close to school—only a five-minute bike ride away.

Along the way, Ethan encountered many familiar classmates.

"Morning, Glen!"

"Morning."

"Morning, Achen~"

"Morning."

Ethan was quite well-liked at school, though many knew him while he couldn't remember their names.

The reason was simple: in a school environment that didn't emphasize material things too much, as long as you had one of three qualities—good looks, emotional intelligence, or good grades—you could make friends.

Ethan, to be modest, had A+ grades in all three, so his social life was always fine.

Of course, this semester, there was one more important factor to consider: Pokémon strength.

Maybe because physical fitness was stronger in this world, school age was younger.

Although school had already reached the third year of high school, most students were only just sixteen, having recently received their starter Pokémon in the summer or even earlier.

Ethan, who had only gotten Eevee in August, was among the last to receive a Pokémon.

...

The Ancient city high school that Ethan attended was one of the best schools in Riverhaven for Pokémon education resources.

Students with aspirations to work in Pokémon-related fields would study basic Pokémon knowledge in the first and second years.

From this semester, third-year students would begin practical training in Pokémon breeding and battles.

As soon as he entered school, Ethan saw many students releasing their Pokémon.

Ancient High School was not only great in quality, but also had excellent students, most of whom had their starter Pokémon carefully selected from breeding bases. Some Pokémon had great growth potential, including rare ones from various regions, like the regional starters.

There were others who, like Ethan, chose Eevee as their starter Pokémon.

After all, Eevee was not too expensive, and its evolution was mainly dependent on an evolution stone.

The different evolutions also had distinct characteristics, catering to most trainers' needs.

From the speed and output-focused Jolteon, Flareon, and Leafeon, to the tanky Vaporeon and Umbreon, and the well-rounded Glaceon, Eevee was a very popular choice for many trainers.

Wasn't there one evolution missing, though?

Hmm, the only King Evolution wasn't without its advantages. At least, it's warm to take with you in winter.

In any case, Eevee was an excellent starter Pokémon, despite being a bit soft in temperament. Before evolution, it might not have been able to defeat other Pokémon, but it was still a great choice.

After parking his bike, Ethan released Eevee from her Poké Ball.

"Eevee, this is the place we'll be studying at for the next year."

"Eevee~"

Though Eevee was just as familiar with the campus as Ethan, she still gave him an exaggerated look of curiosity, eager to learn.

Then, she strongly condemned Ethan for leaving her in her Poké Ball for more than ten minutes.

Ethan helplessly agreed to add a basket to the front of his bike, so Eevee could at least experience a bit of luxury treatment. After that, she gave a satisfied hum and quieted down.

...

In a world with Pokémon, even schools had to be a bit bigger. From the bike shed to the classrooms, it took Ethan nearly ten minutes to walk.

He arrived a bit late, and maybe because they were about to start actual Pokémon battle lessons this semester, many students were especially excited, chatting and showing off their starter Pokémon.

"Your Psyduck looks so goofy, can it really battle? Hahaha!"

"Heh, don't underestimate my Psyduck, the number of trainers who've been beaten by it is growing!"

"That doesn't stand a chance against my Ivysaur, don't you know about type advantages?"

"Ha, when did Grass beat Psychic?"

"?? Since when is Psyduck a Psychic-type?"

The air was filled with ridiculous conversations like this.

There was one person who stood out, though: a girl, running around between desks with a stack of homework books, looking like a diligent worker gathering honey.

This unfortunate soul was Ethan's childhood friend and class monitor, Rosa.

However, her diligence had not been rewarded, as after several minutes of collecting homework, the pile was barely growing.

Sure enough, collecting summer homework was no different from chasing after a delinquent debtor.

Ethan shook his head and called the confused girl over.

...

"How's the summer homework collection going?" Ethan asked knowingly.

Rosa sighed, looking like a farmer whose fruit had not sold, "Barely halfway through."

Ethan grinned, "Didn't they say something like, 'I forgot it at home'?"

Rosa rolled her eyes, "Even worse. Some said Charizard burned it, some said Growlithe shredded it, and one even said Snorlax ate it!"

Ethan was stunned. His classmates were quite talented, blaming their Pokémon for eating their homework. What a great excuse!

Rosa changed the topic, "Enough about others, what about yours?"

Ethan coughed and looked down at Eevee, who was playing with his phone, "Uh, Eevee accidentally broke it while practicing Swift?"

Eevee looked up, speechless. "Eevee? (You think my Swift tracking targets could break your homework?)"

Ethan patted her head, "It's okay, even though it caused me some trouble, I'm not mad at you."

Rosa was amused, "So you're using your summer homework as a target, huh?"

Ethan shrugged, "It's just summer homework, no big deal. If you're worried, just give it all to me, I'll hand it to Teacher Gerald."

Rosa was relieved, happy to get rid of this hot potato.

Fearing Ethan might change his mind, she quickly placed the homework on his desk and ran off.
