David led Tina and Newt through the red magical trail, leaving the bustling city behind. The path stretched endlessly, guiding them toward the outskirts where sprawling grasslands met a dense forest. As they approached, the faint outlines of figures near the forest's edge came into view.
"Grandpa, look over there," David whispered, pointing at the group of people.
"Stay low," Newt instructed, crouching behind a small hill. Together, they crept closer to observe.
Newt's expertise quickly came into play. With a flick of his wand, its tip morphed into the shape of an ear. Pointing it toward the group, their conversation floated back to the trio.
"Is everything ready?" one man asked sharply.
"Yes," came a trembling reply. David recognized the voice as belonging to the nervous young man they had tracked earlier.
"Good. Once you reach the coast, someone will take over. Remember, this enchanted cloth can mask the beast's magic, but avoid being seen," the leader barked.
David's heart sank as he saw them fastening ropes around a large cage. Inside was a Kamera cub, its tiny form a reminder of the magical creatures Newt had devoted his life to protecting.
"What now, Grandpa?" David whispered urgently.
Newt thought for a moment before making a sudden decision. "You and Tina stay here and hold them off. I'll return soon!" And with that, he vanished using Apparition.
David stared at the spot where Newt had disappeared. "Grandpa, are you serious?" he muttered. Six armed individuals against him and Tina? His anxiety mounted, but he knew there was no turning back.
David turned to Tina, quickly outlining a plan. "I'll help you stay hidden while you sneak closer. Attack them to cause a distraction, then retreat into the forest to draw them away. I'll support you from here."
Tina, a seasoned Auror, smirked confidently. "Don't worry, David. You'll see what I can do."
Using magic from his Illustrated Beast Guide, David cloaked Tina in invisibility. She moved stealthily toward the group, leaving only faintly crushed grass in her wake. As she got closer, her wand sent a spell hurtling toward the group, cutting the ropes that secured the cage.
"Who's there?!" one of the men shouted, his companions spinning around in alarm.
Spells flew wildly as Tina retreated, luring two of the attackers into the forest. Meanwhile, David summoned a three-headed spectral dog, sending it into the fray. The ghostly beast lunged at the remaining group, scattering them in panic.
Unfortunately, the spells that struck the spectral dog sent a sharp, searing pain through David. He gritted his teeth, sweat dripping as he struggled to maintain his conjuration. "Grandpa, now would be a great time to come back," he thought desperately.
Just as he began to falter, the two men who had pursued Tina bolted from the forest, their faces pale with fear.
"Run! Get out of here!" they shouted to their comrades.
Behind them, a deafening roar echoed. A pack of adult Kamera beasts burst from the trees, charging after the fleeing men.
David's heart skipped a beat. "Wait... they're running this way!"
The ground trembled as the beasts and thieves headed straight for his hiding spot. David tried to move but collapsed, utterly drained of magic. His last thought before blacking out was a panicked realization: I'm going to die by Kamera mauling!
When David regained consciousness, he was lying on a soft bed in a quiet, unfamiliar room. He groaned as he pushed himself up, his body still aching from the magical exertion.
The room was simple but elegant, with white walls adorned with intricate carvings. "Where am I?" he murmured, glancing down at his changed clothes. He stumbled toward the door, his head spinning slightly, and stepped into a corridor.
"Grandpa? Grandma?" David called out, his voice echoing.
There was no response.
He walked farther and suddenly recognized where he was: The Temple of Hedec, the headquarters of the Fantastic Beast Conservation Department. Relief washed over him. He hadn't been transported to another world.
But something felt off. The usually bustling sanctuary was eerily quiet, save for the faint sounds of magical creatures stirring in their enclosures.
"Where is everyone?" David muttered, his heart beating faster. He clenched his wand tightly and prepared to find out.
