Chương 68: chapter 13

As the others were preparing Stoick's funeral boat, Fishlegs broke off from the group to search for Hiccup. He found his dear friend sitting by the water with his legs held tightly to his chest, absentmindedly fidgeting with a braid hidden within his hair that Kala had tied together earlier in the year.

The young Viking sat by his side with a sad smile. "The others are almost done with setting everything up…how you holding up..?"

Hiccup glanced at him, then put his sight back on the gentle waves with a deep sigh. "Barely being held together by a thread, if I'm being honest…I lost my dad…the Alpha to this nest is dead…and I'm probably never going to see Kala again…so yeah…doing peachy…"

Fishlegs gave him a sympathetic look, then looked at the waves as they crashed upon the shore a few feet away from them. It was a rather serene view. A stark difference to their situation. Their chief was dead. The culprit traveling to Berk with all those dragons, forcing Kala to be in the lead against her will.

After the two of them sat there in silence for what felt like ages to the Ingerman, Hiccup finally stood and wiped the sand off his clothing.

"No point in staying here, is there..? C'mon…let's get back to the others…" The young Night Fury said softly as Fishlegs stood with a nod, then the both of them trekked back to where the others waited, the funeral boat waiting patiently on the shore to be pushed into the awaiting waters.

Hiccup and Valka pushed the vessel off the shore as everyone readied their bow and arrows. As the two Haddocks backed away from the ocean, Gobber handed a bow and arrow to Hiccup, who readied said arrow as Gobber began the eulogy.

"May the Valkyries welcome you, and lead you through Odin's great battlefield. May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we may hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla…and know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings. For a great man has fallen. A warrior. A chieftain. A father. A friend."

Hiccup made sure his arrow was well lit with flames before he released it. The arrow arched through the sky and met its target, beginning to set aflame to the boat floating gently in the water. The others followed suit, each arrow meeting the wood of the ship and expanding the fire that had spread from Hiccup's arrow.

"I'm sorry, Dad." Hiccup apologized as his gaze stayed on the now ablaze boat, the bow long forgotten and on the beach by his side. "I'm not the peacekeeper I thought I was. I don't know…"

Valka set down her bow and made her way beside her son, watching the boat slowly burn away as she did. "You came early into this world. You were such a wee thing. So frail, so fragile. I feared you wouldn't make it. But your father…he never doubted. He always said you'd become the strongest of them all. And he was right." She gave Hiccup a warm smile as tears pricked at the edges of her eyes as the two of them locked eyes. "You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon. Only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, Hiccup."

Hiccup looked away with tears forming in his green orbs, he wiped hastily at his eyes to try and rid them before they even escaped. "I was so afraid of becoming my dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great? That brave? That selfless? I guess you can only try."

As the words sunk in, Hiccup found himself suddenly filled with a fierce determination to protect his tribe. To protect his home from the dangers of Drago Bludvist. He turned to the others with a determined look as he clenched his fists.

"A chief protects his own. My dad died not only protecting his family, but protecting his tribe. We're going back to make sure his sacrifice was not in vain."

"Uh, with what?" Tuffnut asked with a raised brow.

"He took all the dragons." Ruffnut pointed out exasperatedly, waving a hand dramatically around them to prove her point.

Hiccup gained a small smirk when he remembered that there were quite a few Scuttleclaw hatchlings playing within the sanctuary while they spoke outside on the beach.

"Not all of them."

Valka's eyes widened as she put together what Hiccup was getting at. "The baby dragons."

The two Haddocks then proceeded to lead the others into the sanctuary. Valka took the lead and led the group to the main area of the nest where they found eight Scuttleclaw hatchlings playing together.

"This is how we're getting back to Berk." Hiccup said with a smile as he gestured to the babies.

"Uh…not to shatter your plans or anything, but there's eight of them and nine of us. And from what I can tell, these little ones ain't big enough for two people. One of us would have to stay behind." Eret explained as he looked over at the baby dragons playing just a couple yards away from the group.

"Correction. There's nine dragons." Snotlout said a bit annoyed as he motioned to Hiccup dramatically.

Eret raised a brow as he looked at the young Night Fury, then back at Snotlout. "Did ya hit your head or somethin' during the battle?"

"No, he's right. There are nine dragons present." Hiccup said nonchalantly as his wings and tail came out of hiding as he shrugged.

Eret's eyes widened as he saw the midnight wings splay out of the boy's back and the tail as it swayed back and forth slowly behind the young dragon. He backed up a bit as his hands went to grab the knife hidden by his side. The other riders and the blacksmith all took notice of this and brandished their own weapons as they blocked Eret off from Hiccup.

"I'd watch your next move carefully if I was you." Gobber said with a glare that sent a shiver down Eret's spine.

"Everyone just settle down!" Hiccup shouted as he got between the group with arms spread out to keep them from attacking one another. He then looked toward Eret as he spoke. "Yes, I know it's shocking that I'm a dragon. I'm used to this reaction by now. But can we please not fight amongst one another when there is a madman heading to Berk as we speak?" Hiccup asked, now looking between everyone, who all nodded in acceptance as they put away their weapons.

The young Night Fury smiled and nodded as well. Once that was settled, he and Valka helped the others wrangle the baby dragons and they were speeding out of the sanctuary in no time, but not without difficulty.

Hiccup was at the front of the group in hybrid form as they navigated through the maze of caves leading to the outside. The others struggled to follow behind him as the babies flew erratically, not wanting to listen to their riders.

"Fly straight, WILL YA?!" Ruffnut complained as she fought with her Scuttleclaw.

"I don't want to die!" Fishlegs exclaimed as he held onto the baby dragon for dear life.

"We can't fly these things!" Tuffnut shouted as his Scuttleclaw zipped about every which way.

"Yeah, no kidding!" Fishlegs said just before he crashed through a snow pile they passed by.

Nanna was able to steer her baby dragon close enough to Hiccup and struggled to keep the baby from veering away from the Night Fury as she spoke. "Won't the Bewilderbeast just take control of these guys, too? Hel, won't it take control of you?"

"They're babies. They don't listen to anyone! And I'll be able to fight off the control as long as I stay in human form. I'll be fine Nanna." He reassured her with a kind smile.

Hiccup's attention is caught by Gobber as he begins to speak between his struggles. "This…is…" He was then cut off as his Scuttleclaw crashes into an ice wall then recovers as though nothing had happened. "very dangerous!" The blacksmith finished right before his dragon crashed yet again and recovered just like before. "Some might suggest this is poorly conceived."

"Well, it's a good thing that I never listen." Hiccup chided with a chuckle.

Gobber was able to steer his dragon close enough to his apprentice, conversing as they flew past breaks in the walls of the maze. "So–what IS your–plan?" He asked, getting cut off each time they passed a section of wall.

"Get Kala back and kick Drago's ass." Hiccup said confidently as he easily dodged an iceberg.

"Oh great plan." Gobber sarcastically said just before his dragon crashed into the ice yet again.
