With Kamui's terrifying mobility and the inscrutable genjutsu of the Sharingan, Obito quickly gathered the information he needed.
Inside the Kamui dimension, his eyes narrowed slightly.
"Danzo and Hanzo colluding together is a certainty," he muttered. "The only unknown is how Madara… or rather, Black Zetsu, will intervene now that the storyline has changed."
He frowned briefly, then shrugged. "No point overthinking it. I'll just go see for myself. With Kamui, nobody can stop me anyway."
The Akatsuki, originally led by Yahiko, began with a noble vision—to create peace in the world without relying on extreme violence. In the Land of Rain, this ideal naturally held great appeal.
Within just a few years, the Akatsuki had grown into a powerful organization, so much so that even Hanzo the Salamander—a demigod in his own right—saw them as a threat.
Of course, this development wasn't without external interference. Danzo, ever the manipulative schemer, had played his part in stoking Hanzo's fears.
Hanzo, worried that the Akatsuki might challenge his rule, conspired with Danzo to set a trap for Yahiko and his comrades. Under the guise of an alliance to bring peace between the three great nations, Hanzo lured Yahiko and the others into a deadly ambush.
Using Konan as a hostage, Hanzo successfully forced Yahiko to his death.
In doing so, Hanzo snuffed out the last glimmer of hope in the darkness and created a twisted monster that would plunge the shinobi world into deeper despair.
But this tragedy hadn't happened—not yet.
"This should be the place…"
Amid the unrelenting drizzle, Obito arrived at the meeting site where Yahiko was scheduled to confront Hanzo.
The location was a series of rolling hills, where behind each low rise lurked squads of Konoha's ANBU and Amegakure shinobi.
According to the agreed-upon time, Yahiko, Nagato, and the others were set to appear in half an hour.
As he waited, Obito rehearsed various scenarios in his mind.
"In my memory, Danzo and Hanzo didn't send anyone to hunt down the remaining Akatsuki members after Yahiko's death. If that's the case, then the ones who acted were myself and White Zetsu… which means I can use that as a reference."
"If the Akatsuki members fail to arrive, it might mean Black Zetsu has already stepped in."
Time passed quietly, until Yahiko and Nagato finally appeared in the distance.
Obito sighed heavily. "Not a single guard with them… just two overly idealistic fools."
He shook his head. "They'll never accomplish anything this way. I'd better have a word with them later. Survival is the ultimate strategy."
On the hilltop, Hanzo stood imposingly, flanked by numerous shinobi, with a bound and gagged Konan in his grasp.
Yahiko's face darkened as he beheld the scene.
"Hanzo-sama, what is the meaning of this?"
Hanzo's voice was cold.
"Your organization is a nuisance to me."
He raised a kunai and brought it close to Konan's throat.
"Yahiko, as the leader, you should die here. Resist, and this woman dies."
Yahiko's expression crumbled. "Damn it… damn it all!"
He had idolized Hanzo, dreaming of following in his footsteps to bring peace to the Land of Rain. On the day Hanzo acknowledged him, Yahiko had been overjoyed, celebrating in secret.
But now, that same Hanzo was ready to kill him.
Hatred burned in Yahiko's heart.
Hanzo wasted no time, tossing a kunai to the ground before them.
"The red-haired one—use this to kill Yahiko, and I'll let you and the woman live."
Nagato's body trembled violently.
What… what should I do?
On the hill, Konan screamed, "Run! Don't worry about me—just get out of here!"
Rain mingled with the tears on her face, her voice breaking.
Seeing Konan's desperation, Yahiko made his decision.
Expressionless, he whispered, "Nagato… kill me."
Nagato froze, unable to accept the reality before him. Yahiko roared, "Nagato, pick up the kunai and kill me!"
Hands shaking, Nagato bent down, picking up the weapon and pointing it hesitantly at his friend.
On the hill, Konan's voice broke in a heart-wrenching scream. "Stop it, Nagato!"
A fleeting smile of relief crossed Yahiko's face.
"Nagato, live on. Protect Konan and carry on our dream…"
With that, Yahiko lunged forward, aiming to impale himself on the kunai in Nagato's hands.
But before he could, an unexpected voice echoed across the hillside.
"I've always hated those who manipulate from the shadows, stabbing others in the back."
"Disgusting!"
Hanzo's eyes widened in shock as a blade pierced his abdomen. He slowly turned to look behind him.
"You hate backstabbers… yet you stabbed me in the back?!"
Before him stood a Konoha ANBU operative.
The realization dawned on Hanzo almost immediately. "I see… Danzo, you cunning bastard…"
Among the Konoha shinobi, one of Danzo's subordinates paled.
"Hanzo-sama, you misunderstand! This man isn't one of us! He's trying to sow discord!"
Hanzo's vision began to blur as the toxin from his ruptured poison sac took effect. Even he couldn't withstand the poison of his own salamander.
The sudden twist left everyone stunned. Yahiko, now in Nagato's arms, stared up at the hilltop in disbelief.
"Is… is this an internal conflict?"
Nagato, still dazed, nodded slowly. "It… it seems like it."
Naturally, the Konoha ANBU was none other than Obito in disguise. Holding the dying Hanzo, Obito spoke with mock passion.
"That's right, I'm not a member of the ANBU. I have no name, no emotions, no past, and no future. We are the roots that support the great tree of Konoha!"
The Amegakure shinobi exchanged wary glances, their hands gripping their weapons tightly. The existence of Root was no secret to them.
Danzo's subordinates were visibly panicked.
"This man is not from Root! He's slandering us!"
But among the Konoha shinobi, a voice murmured, "But… that slogan… only Root members would know it. Could it be… Danzo-sama ordered this without informing us?"
Even Danzo's men began doubting themselves. Could it be true?
Hanzo, on the brink of death, muttered in a daze, "Your assassination skills are unparalleled. I, Hanzo, admit my defeat… Tell me your name… so I know who killed me."
Obito shook his head decisively. "I have no name. Root operatives are nameless."
He paused, then added dramatically, "But Danzo-sama asked me to deliver a message—"
