Arriving at Dongwu Castle, the city appeared somewhat strange overall. The stone walls were lined with high-tech cannons, pointed menacingly towards the distance. Soldiers armed with Barrett energy guns patrolled the area, while warriors at the city gates stood ready with long swords and shields.
"Mr. White Plague!"
"Mr. White Plague!"
The eyes of the two soldiers guarding the city gates lit up as they straightened and greeted him with respect.
Who in the border guard of Dongwu City doesn't know the renowned alchemist? The equipment made by Bai Yi was highly coveted by all soldiers, as it had the potential to save their lives on the battlefield.
"Mr. White Plague, is there anything I can help you with?" a young soldier asked, stepping forward with a polite, almost fawning smile.
In their eyes, alchemists were intellectuals who likely found carrying such a large shield to be strenuous. Given Bai Yi's status in Dongwu City, it was always good to earn his favor.
"Please call a car for me. Thank you," Bai Yi responded gently, pausing for a moment.
The soldier's eyes gleamed, and he quickly nodded, "Wait right here, Mr. Bai Yi, I'll be back in a moment."
Bai Yi nodded in acknowledgment and glanced upwards. The city wall was about eight meters thick, and as he passed through the gates, he noticed that the east gate was lined with mechanical structures. Steel was densely packed above, forming an elaborate passage into the city.
This was a bit excessive, considering this was the border of the Dawn Federation. It was said that a long time ago, when the old swordsman had traveled to the Star Federation to the north, he had requested alchemists to create weapons to defend the border.
Bai Yi, the alchemist sage specializing in machinery, had always wondered: how could a mere gold-level old wolf, along with a few monsters from the mutation zone, be able to breach such a heavily fortified city?
Beiyuan City, located in the north, had used the backup of the border city in version 2.0. A Gundam briefly fought against a legend and held out until the arrival of the legendary Berserker in the Federation.
Suppressing his doubts, Bai Yi continued into Dongwu City.
The city's layout was strikingly different from the high-tech walls outside. As he walked deeper, he was met with a large expanse of low, simple brick and stone buildings. These were the civilian areas. The streets were relatively clean, but the contrast to the technological marvels of the city walls was evident.
At that moment, the soldier returned, driving a sleek, futuristic vehicle. The car was pure white with a sci-fi style, giving the impression of the future tearing through the ancient.
These vehicles were developed by the nobility and were considered symbols of status. Each cost thousands of gold coins. There were many such flashy vehicles around the four gates of Dongwu City, and some nobles could even be seen speeding through the streets, although traffic wasn't a problem in the more affluent areas.
Bai Yi got into the car, casually flicking a gold coin to the passenger seat before calmly ordering, "Drive faster."
"Understood, sir," the soldier replied, his eyes lighting up. He stepped on the accelerator, and the car roared forward, speeding away amid the envious gazes of the civilians.
Bai Yi touched the seat in front of him with his fingertips, causing it to transform into a small screen. A faint blue light appeared next to his hand, and a bottle of milk materialized.
Taking a sip, Bai Yi gazed out the window, observing the cold, barren scene. With the snowstorm in full force, few civilians dared to venture outside; most stayed indoors, working.
Every time he took a car, Bai Yi couldn't help but marvel at how this world's capital surpassed even the one from his previous life.
The common people here lacked proper transportation, used copper coins, and lived in places without electricity. In stark contrast, the wealthy districts boasted futuristic vehicles and luxuries beyond imagination.
As the soldier drove into the inner city's special lanes, the car's speed increased exponentially since civilians weren't allowed in these lanes. With the one-way street system, any skilled driver could push the vehicle to its limit.
It only took about thirty minutes before they reached the end of the civilian area. Before Bai Yi stood another tall wall.
Soldiers here were more heavily armed, and nearly all were bronze-level transcendents. Alchemical cannons pointed outward from the walls, reinforcing the strict defense. This was the inner city—the heart of the wealthy district!
"Mr. Bai Yi, we've arrived," the soldier said with a smile. The door to the car near Bai Yi opened automatically, rising up like wings.
"Thank you," Bai Yi said, nodding in acknowledgment as he stepped out and made his way toward the city gate.
Technically, civilians could enter the inner city as well, but they were required to register and pay an entrance fee of ten copper coins. However, most people wouldn't waste these coins unless absolutely necessary.
Bai Yi, on the other hand, passed through effortlessly, as the rich had special privileges. There was no need for him to pay any fees.
"Mr. White Plague!"
"Mr. White Plague!"
As Bai Yi approached the gate, the soldiers on guard greeted him with warm smiles. His reputation was well known, even across the Dawn Federation. His fame stemmed not only from his alchemical prowess but also from the advanced items he had brought from thirty years in the future, making him a well-recognized figure.
Though many of these innovations had been rapidly replicated, often without the original copyright fees, the benefits they brought him were immeasurable.
With a brief nod in response to the greetings, Bai Yi stepped through the gate and into the inner city. Immediately, it felt as if he had stepped from the past into the future.
Neon lights illuminated the doors of shops, and towering buildings—some as high as seven or eight stories—lined the streets. The ground was incredibly smooth, and there was a distinct clean, almost polished feel to the air, thanks to alchemical materials.
In stark contrast to the decaying, deserted civilian areas, the inner city was bustling with prosperity. Elves, goblins, orcs, and other races lived together in harmony. Extraordinary fluctuations could be felt on almost every person in the crowd.
Bai Yi even saw elves and goblins entering a neon-lit tavern, arm in arm. The sounds of games, shouts, and the music of bards soon filled the air. Even the blizzard outside couldn't halt this vibrant atmosphere.
These scenes would have been unimaginable before Ragnarok. Back then, the proud long-eared elves would never have mingled so freely with other races. But in the face of an apocalyptic disaster, even they had set aside their pride—though the appearance-obsessed majority of elves still maintained their lofty ideals.
Bai Yi made his way to the largest store in the city center, a massive building illuminated by bright neon signs: [Dawn Pharmacy].
