Chương 79: I saw nothing at all

Bathed in the cool glow of the moonlight, Xiao Mu Yu quietly traversed the Tauren village under the night sky.

Within his consciousness, his cold summons echoed softly.

"Night, respond."

(...)

"I know you can hear me; reply."

(...)

"Is it amusing to feign silence like this?"

(...)

"Speak, why… do you not speak?"

(...)

"I know you can hear me, so speak."

(...)

"Didn't you always enjoy conversing? Why… are you silent now?"

(...)

"Please, speak; I can sense that the mental link between us has not truly severed. You can hear my words."

(...)

"Why… do you not respond? That incident this afternoon… was it your doing?"

(...)

"Regarding this afternoon, do you wish to convey something to me?"

(...)

"Speak; if you remain silent… you need not speak again in the future."

(...)

After a prolonged, indifferent summons, when Xiao Mu Yu returned to the tent assigned to him and the young girl, despite his threats and coaxing, the demon, usually so loquacious, remained uncharacteristically silent within the confines of his consciousness.

Were it not for the faint sensation of their intermittent mental connection, Xiao Mu Yu might have mistakenly believed, as he had that morning, that the connection had been severed due to some unforeseen circumstance.

Pushing open the tent flap, Xiao Mu Yu discovered, under the flickering candlelight, the young girl seated at the tall table, hugging a large pillow while perusing a book she had inexplicably acquired.

"Oh… big brother, you're back!" Noticing Xiao Mu Yu's presence, the little girl tilted her adorable head and greeted him.

"Ah… I have returned," he replied indifferently, closing the wooden door behind him. "Why are you still awake at this late hour?"

"Um… well… heehee… let's not worry about sleep right now, big brother; Annie has something to discuss with you," the girl said, her face lighting up with a smile. "Look, big brother… the river outside the village is so clean and clear!"

"Ah… indeed, this river is remarkably clear. It is quite miraculous to find such purity amidst the vast desert; however…" Casting a cold glance at the cheerful girl, Xiao Mu Yu asked, "What do you wish to convey? Do you merely wish to inform me of the river's beauty?"

"Heehee… of course not!" The girl said, clasping her hands behind her back and leaning forward, grinning. "Big brother, we have traveled through the desert for so long, and the winds have been harsh. Yet, we had no opportunity to bathe while we were there, and I feel so uncomfortable…"

"Now that we are here, look at how clean and clear the river is! If we do not take the chance to wash off the dust and sand while we can, once we leave this oasis, we may never have the opportunity again… and we still have at least a month to endure in the desert."

"…" Observing the girl's eager expression, Xiao Mu Yu contemplated for a moment before coldly inquiring, "You… want to wash with me?"

The young girl's face instantly flushed.

"Um… well, of course not! Big brother, you… you can wash first, and then Annie will go afterward… although, if big brother… if you strongly insist on washing together, then… I wouldn't be opposed to that either." The girl said, her cheeks reddening as she fidgeted.

"…" Coldly regarding the blushing girl, Xiao Mu Yu maintained his usual icy tone, "You… are afraid of the dark, aren't you?"

"Gah?" The little girl stiffened, her eyes wide as she looked at Xiao Mu Yu, her gaze evasive as she retorted, "How… how could that be! Annie… Annie is a seventh-tier great mage, already an adult! There's no way… I would be afraid of the dark like a child!"

"Ah! By the way, big brother, do you remember when you saved me? At that time, I was living alone in that dark and eerie dilapidated house. I dared to stay in such a terrifying place, so how could I possibly be afraid of the dark?"

Casting a cold glance at the book titled "Midnight Terror" on the table, Xiao Mu Yu looked at the girl and said, "Very well… let us go wash… um… shall we go now?"

"Heehee… yes, yes, right now! It's already midnight, and everyone else has gone to sleep; if we go now, we won't run into anyone." With Xiao Mu Yu no longer pursuing the topic, the little girl sighed in relief, her face beaming.

After a brief preparation, the wooden door was pushed open once more.

Stepping into the cool moonlight, Xiao Mu Yu took the little girl's hand and walked toward the outskirts of the village.

"Annie… I have a question to ask you." As they walked among the towering beast-skin tents, Xiao Mu Yu spoke coldly.

"Um… what question, big brother?" The little girl asked, tilting her head in confusion as she held Xiao Mu Yu's hand.

"It concerns the ghosthorn direwolf. Do you… remember how many tails it had? Two? Or three?" Xiao Mu Yu inquired, his tone icy as they walked in the cool moonlight.

"Um… the tail of the ghosthorn direwolf?" The little girl tilted her head, pondering before saying, "Annie distinctly remembers that the magical wolf only had one tail! Why do you ask if it had two or three tails, big brother? Did you misremember?"

"Are you… certain it only had one tail?" A chilling coldness emanated from Xiao Mu Yu's gaze.

"Of course!" The little girl replied confidently, lifting her chin. "Annie is a seventh-tier great mage; mastering arcane knowledge requires significant intelligence and memory. You must understand, the ocean of arcane knowledge is vast, and even the records for a third-tier fireball spell could fill several sheets of parchment! If all arcane knowledge were compiled into books, it would form an immense mountain."

"The world of the arcane is so intricate and complex that only those with exceptional memory can succeed. For Annie to become a seventh-tier great mage at the age of eight, her memory must be remarkable."

"Is that so… ah… it seems that the ghosthorn direwolf indeed had only one tail. I must have misremembered." A deep, chilling void filled Xiao Mu Yu's gaze as he coldly nodded.

In the next moment, the two figures, one large and one small, stepped into the cool, fragmented moonlight, rounding a corner, the sound of splashing water ringing clear like the gentle chime of wind bells.

Ahead, the crystalline waters flowed quietly, shimmering in the moonlight, resembling a tranquil silver river.

Little Annie froze.

Xiao Mu Yu halted, his demeanor cold and silent.

In the moonlight, a silver-haired woman stood in the center of the river, cupping her hands in wonder, her delicate features betraying a hint of confusion, as if she were curious why these two figures, one large and one small, had appeared at this hour when all others had long since retired.

The icy water barely reached her thighs, and beneath the moonlight, her bare form was long and beautiful, akin to a mermaid emerging from the water, her curves perfect and enchanting.

Beside her, droplets of water lightly cascaded through the air, while more flowed from her hands, glistening on her porcelain-like skin, the clear water tracing the soft, perfect lines of her body, reflecting the cool moonlight, creating a breathtaking beauty.

In Xiao Mu Yu's icy gaze, the cool moonlight poured over the woman's fair skin, her graceful neck, her delicate chest, her slender waist, her slightly rounded abdomen, and between her long legs, a hint of something more…

Thus, the three of them stood silently beneath the chilling moonlight, an unusual atmosphere lingering in the air…

Her dark eyes closed slightly…

Then opened…

Xiao Mu Yu, his expression indifferent, held the little girl's hand and turned away, his emotionless silhouette suggesting that nothing had transpired, his cold, unfeeling voice echoing softly in the cool moonlight, "I… saw nothing at all."

"Splash!"

The sound of water splashing startled Riven, causing her to crouch instinctively like a frightened animal, her arms wrapped around her chest as she submerged her bare form into the icy water, using it to shield her exposed body, leaving only half her head above the surface.

Her gaze, frantic and helpless, followed Xiao Mu Yu as he led the little girl away, and the silver-haired woman opened her mouth, but ultimately could not utter a word.

In the cool moonlight, amidst the icy waters, Riven quietly felt the chill flowing around her, the gentle current gliding over her porcelain skin, and she could only feel her cheeks burning as if set aflame.
