Chương 53: Chapter 52

"These two little guys... they're really something," Mike said, shaking his head helplessly.

He hadn't expected them to make such a bold decision. But their words had truly touched him.

Especially...

Dad is Dad.

There's only one father in this life! Mike felt these two kids had struck the softest part of his heart.

For a moment, he nearly teared up.

"Dad, you can cry if you want to," Clark said, patting Mike's shoulder.

Mike tousled Clark's hair, trying to appear annoyed. "Just keep an eye on them, alright?"

Clark grinned, sticking out his thumb confidently. "They can't escape my sight."

Clark's super vision, while maybe not quite as strong as in the movies, was still sharp enough to keep tabs on them. Tracking them would be a breeze.

Mike stood up. "Let's go."

He drove with Clark, keeping a safe distance behind the two little adventurers.

Clark suddenly burst into laughter.

"What's so funny?" Mike asked curiously, glancing over.

Clark smirked. "Dad, you'll never guess what they're doing right now."

Mike raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"They're riding their boards, using Eric's powers to propel themselves around town, and they're having the time of their lives," Clark said, chuckling.

Mike couldn't help but smile. Those two were certainly creative.

The boys made it to town and, using Charles' powers, managed to board a bus heading to New York.

Their birth father was there.

Mike sighed. 'Travel safely, kids.'

When they reached New York, they hailed a cab and gave the driver the address. If they didn't have enough money, Charles' abilities would cover the fare. His powers, though still developing, were enough for little tricks like these.

But when they finally arrived at the address that evening, they were stunned.

The place had been razed to the ground.

"What happened here?" Charles asked the driver, confused.

The driver shrugged. "It was demolished. They're building something new. Who are you looking for? Need help? Or maybe I could get you to the police?"

"No thanks!" Eric blurted, pulling out a handful of coins. He opened the door and ushered Charles out.

The driver glanced at the two of them, shook his head, and drove off.

"Ugh!" Charles coughed as exhaust fumes hit his face, snapping him out of his daze. "Why'd you make us get out?"

Eric shrugged. "If we didn't get out, we might've ended up living in that cab!"

Charles looked horrified. "We could've just asked him to take us to a hotel! How're we supposed to go anywhere now?"

Eric rubbed the back of his head, mumbling, "Yeah… well…" He looked around at the deserted area and gave Charles an awkward smile.

Charles scowled, grabbing Eric's face in frustration. "Do you see any cabs in this dump?"

The area had recently been cleared for redevelopment, so traffic was sparse. Frustrated, Charles set down his skateboard, climbing onto it with a cold expression.

After a few seconds, he snapped, "Fine, let's go!"

"I don't know the way…" Eric said meekly.

"Why would I know it any better than you do?" Charles retorted, exasperated.

The two stared at each other, expressions deflating.

Eventually, they picked a direction at random and sped off on their 'magnetic skateboards.'

Watching from a distance, Clark shook his head. "Dad, should we give them a hand?"

Mike thought for a moment. "Let's see how they handle this."

They trailed the boys slowly, keeping enough distance.

Fortunately, it wasn't too late in the day. Otherwise, the boys might have collided with pedestrians on the streets. Of course, given Eric and Charles' powers, any collisions would likely inconvenience others more than themselves.

The boys got lucky. After half an hour of riding, they found a kind driver. Once Charles verified that the man was genuinely offering to help, they gratefully climbed into the car and were taken to a hotel.

With their abilities, they managed to check in and have a warm dinner.

Satisfied that they were safe for the night, Mike and Clark checked into a room across the hall from them.

"Dad, is this really necessary?" Clark asked, munching on a burger.

Mike smiled. "They didn't tell me what they were up to, so they want to handle it on their own. If things go well, I won't interfere. So far, they're managing pretty well."

Clark nodded, glancing across the hall. "They're asleep."

Mike acknowledged this and took a bite of his own burger.

"Not as good as your cooking, Dad," Clark muttered.

Mike's face softened with pride. "When we get back, I'll cook whatever you want."

Clark smiled in response.

Watching him, an idea formed in Mike's mind.

Maybe this was the right time to have an honest conversation. This experience with Charles and Eric might be the perfect moment to tell Clark the truth.

"Clark," Mike began gently. "Have you ever wondered about your mother?"

Clark tensed, his voice suddenly colder. "No."

Mike looked at him with warmth. "You've always been a good kid, Clark. You've never given me any trouble… but you also don't lie."

Clark's gaze dropped, his expression hidden. "Dad, don't."

Mike's smile was tender, but his eyes drifted, lost in memory. "Clark, you're smart. You must've pieced it together by now."

Clark swallowed. "No…"

Mike's voice was reassuring, steady. "Son, you're mine, no matter where you came from or what anyone says. You, Charles, and Eric—you're my sons. Nothing can change that."

Clark looked up, his blue eyes shining with emotion.

"Dad…"

A wave of happiness filled Clark, but a bittersweet thought crept into his mind.

Having a mother would be nice, wouldn't it?

Determined, Clark brushed the thought aside. Instead, he whispered, "Thank you, Dad."

Mike chuckled, patting his shoulder. "Thank me for what? Now, finish your burger."

Clark nodded, feeling lighter than he had in years.

With his X-ray vision, he had long ago spotted the spaceship hidden in the basement. It had crossed his mind that it could only belong to either himself or Mike. His differences made him suspect the truth.

But now, the weight of that knowledge had lifted, leaving him feeling free.

"When we get home, I want you to check out the spaceship. There's something else I'd like to give you," Mike said.

Clark nodded. "Okay, Dad."
