Alfie's world froze to a complete halt after the realization that Lucia was pregnant with his child.
He was a father, something he had wanted to become since his late high school days. But it had occurred at the worst possible time.
He wondered if Lucia had known about her pregnancy and kept it a secret from him. Or maybe he was just being paranoid.
Either way, Alfie had something new to worry about, he was now responsible for creating another life.
With such an unexpected factor so late into the situation, Alfie felt lost.
He had only discussed it with a few people, but he wasn't part of the migration plan.
Unlike the others who would be traveling in groups to the other villages, he was going to be by himself.
It wasn't out of stupidity but rather, through thoughtful reasoning. He was 99% sure that the all-father was aiming to harm the whole village and not just the chief.
Through his migration plan, Alfie assumed that at least some people would escape the disaster and live.
With him being directly responsible for the survival of some people who were to have surely died, he must've placed a target on his back.
Traveling with others would likely be a death sentence for them, so he decided to instead travel by himself.
The only person who would stay in Pronoe would be the Chief. Unlike Alfie who had only slighted the all-father, the chief had outright offended him.
The chief chose to stay back not only to give the others a better chance to live but also because he felt he needed to stay.
Although Alfie didn't like his odds at surviving in his plan, he was a lot more accepting of the fact he could.
Now though, he was a hell of a lot less willing to die. He simply couldn't because his wife was pregnant with his child, he was in no way okay with dying.
But from everything he knew, there wasn't anything that could increase his chances at survival in such a short time.
For the past four months, he had been training with Lucia every morning in preparation for his solo journey. He was probably in the best physical shape he had ever been in his life.
He was proficient with daggers, spears, and hand-to-hand combat. He had learned about the local foreable food during his first month on Gaia. And he had prepared the best equipment available to him.
At this current moment, all he could do was hope that all his preparations and his newfound desire to survive would be enough.
If he survived that would be for the best however, if he didn't he needed something to be able to give to his child.
He would instruct Sonia to teach them all the knowledge that he had imparted to her. He could trust both Clare and Jess to protect them as well as help Lucia with raising them.
Alfie sighed a bit of relief that in the event of his death from this world, Lucia and his child would at least have a good community around them to help.
But even so, he knew that it wasn't enough to truly replace his presence as a father and husband.
With what little he could do, he had written down letters for Lucia ones addressed to her for every year.
Now with the addition of a new possible family member, he was going to write another 90 or so letters addressed to his child.
He wanted to make sure that they knew that even though their father wasn't there, it wasn't because he wanted to. He didn't want them to feel abandoned, he wanted them to feel loved even after his passing.
That was in the course that Alfie did end up dying of course. The best possible scenario would be him and Lucia raising their child together as parents would.
Alfie looked over at his still-sleeping wife, her sole presence made him feel happy. He loved her and yet he was essentially preparing for his own death.
Before Alfie started writing 150 new letters to his wife and child, he was going to write about something he felt his child should learn through him as well.
It had been a long-standing disappointment for Alfie that he wasn't able to properly harness this world's power system.
It wasn't out of laziness but rather a complete lack of information, unlike other power systems he had read about in books there was no starting base for him.
Simply put no one on Gaia had figured out a path for humans to grow stronger and gain the supernatural powers this world offered.
Unlike in the books he read about, he didn't have the help of centuries worth of trial and error to create a base of information.
Alfie had asked the chief for help, but even he didn't have much insight on how to progress in his own journey as a priest.
Despite finding little success in finding a path forward he never did give up on the elusive power system.
His efforts didn't go without results though and, through his own trial and error, he figured out one potential path.
Worship but more specifically subordination. As Alfie rose through the social ladder of Pronoe and finally solidified his position as counselor, he noticed a minuscule change in his being.
Due to his attribute of [Soul entity], he was much more sensitive to changes to his soul.
So how surprised was he when he could feel streams of energy flowing from the people of Pronoe into his own soul?
He had found a way forward but it relied on the amount of people under him. Given that humanity had just started on his world the amount of power it could provide was truly limited.
Of course, Alfie had other theories on how to progress as well, but they weren't exactly tried and true. He had theories that becoming famous, or reputable in a field would also produce the same effect but he couldn't test them out.
Bloodlines were another source of power he assumed existed, but it was only a path for those who had supernatural parents.
In the span of an hour, Alfie had written down everything he knew and theorized about the world's power system.
He wanted to pass this information on to his child in hopes that unlike him, they would get the chance to grow strong enough to protect those close to them.
The sound of Lucia raising her head from her desk broke Alfie's concentration. He looked over to her and smiled.
Now he had to ask if she had known she was pregnant and if she did just how long she had known.
