"Sis, you're the best. I am certain that you'll get this job," Luke assured Sally who had a look of uncertainty in her face.
"Are you sure Luke?"
"Dead serious. I am certain. You should make good use of this opportunity."
"What is the name of the company?," Sally asked.
"Dalgo Holdings. They are in need of a Secretary. I went through the requirements and you fit in," Luke said.
That night after dinner, she went online and after reading through the job description, she applied.
She was sceptical about the whole thing. But then, it's better trying than doing nothing.
She checked online for more information about the company. It was one of the most successful food producing companies in the country with branches scattered across the globe.
Nothing much was revealed about the CEO. Well, what is important is that it was genuine. The last thing she wants is to fall for an online scam .
Three days later she was invited for an interview in which she answered most of the questions intelligently.
The manager had told her that she would be contacted and that was it.
Days turned into weeks, yet nothing. Not even a text from them.
She was starting to give up on them to look elsewhere.
At this point, she had hit rock bottom and was desperate for any kind legit work.
Not minding how she will be treated.
She was in the kitchen chopping vegetables when May walked in with a basket containing groceries.
"May, you went shopping. Oh, how kind of you," Sally's eyes became misty.
May the basket of grocery on the counter. "Come Sally, stop it. I promised to help, remember."
"Yea, you're such a sweet soul," Sally said.
May came close to the stovetop and sniffed. "I smell something delicious."
Sally laughed. Since she lost her job, it will be the first time she is laughing. "I am trying to get something for lunch."
"Wow, that is great. I am so hungry right now, I could eat a horse," May responded as she rubbed her stomach.
"Hmm, I see," Sally replied as her eyes twinkled.
May opened the refrigerator and brought out a can of Coca Cola. She opened it and drank from it.
"Tell me about the job you applied for."
Sally poured scrambled eggs into the pan and kept it on the stovetop. Then turned towards May. "I wish they would respond to me. I haven't heard anything yet," There was a twinge of pain in her voice.
"You'll get a job soon."
Sally's phone beeped. She moved away from the stovetop as she brought out her phone. Then she swiped to check her email notification. What she read made her scream.
"Yes! Yes, May, I got the job!"
May quickly moved over to see what she was saying and read the mail. " Oh my God! You just got yourself a job."
They both squealed happily.
"Finally, I am expected to start tomorrow. I am so happy."
May smiled cheerfully.
Luke rushed to the kitchen. "Sis, I heard voices. Are you alright?," his eyes scanned the kitchen.
Sally went to Luke beaming a smile. "See, I got the job."
Luke read the mail and his lips curled into a smile. "Wow! That's good news sis." He hugged his sister happily. Then pulled away, still smiling.
"Damn it, the eggs," May said as she ran to the stovetop. The eggs were starting to turn brown. She put off the stove quickly.
Sally slapped her temples. "Shit, I forgot. My bad."
She went close to check the eggs.
"It's okay. The eggs were not burnt."
Sally brought out dishes to serve lunch which they ate happily.
That night, May walked into her room with two glasses and a bottle of red wine. "Let's celebrate your success."
"Yes, I will drink a little."
May poured a little for Sally and some for herself.
Sally gulped it down. " I think I need more," she poured another one.
May's eyes widened in surprise. "I think you should take it slow, okay. Trust me, you don't want to be drunk. You have a job and it's tomorrow."
"Yea I know just a little won't hurt."
Soon they both emptied the bottle and May left for her room.
As soon as Sally's head hit the pillow, she dozed away.
It was morning, the sun rays streaked into the room through the window.
"Sally, Sally," she felt someone nudged her in her sleep.
"Go away," Sally slurred.
"Sally, you'd be late for work."
She jolted out of her sleep wide eyed.
"Oh my God! What's the time, May?"
"It's past seven, you need to hurry."
Sally sprang up from her bed and ran to the bathroom. She needed to be at work by 8:00 a.m
This can't be happening again. She can't afford to miss out on this.
After bathing, she got ready for work. She was dressed in a few minutes.
When she stepped out, she met May setting the table for breakfast.
"You should eat something," May said.
"I will grab something later. I need to be at work."
She rushed out and entered her car. She started her car but it wouldn't start.
Her heart started beating fast. This can't be. She needed to turn in early for work.
She got down from her car. May came out too.
"Sally, what's going on?"
"I don't know, my car is acting up."
"Maybe you should get a cab. You've missed the bus already," May said.
Suddenly, I cab drove past and Sally called after it. Then it stopped.
"Bye, May."
"Have a nice day at work," May waved.
Sally ran to the cab. Thankfully, she was not in heels. She opened the door and stepped in.
The driver sped off after Sally gave him directions.
Her heart beat increased. She only had 10 minutes left.
If I lose this opportunity. It will be hard getting another one.
She shivered in thought. By the time she got to the com, it was past eight.
What if she loses this job?
