The tension within him died down in a second, his fist unfurling as he let go of the nerve wrecking emotion that had overwhelmed him.
The presence of Kai in the auditorium was not entirely surprising, but he had overlooked the variable of meeting him at the academy since the day he had arrived.
Ace straightened up his shoulder, awaiting what information was about to crawl out of Kai's lips and what trouble the rumors would serve as a confirmation to.
"A millennium ago, unknown portals— hell's gate from another dimension opened in every corner of the earth forcing boundaries on nations and clans as war broke out among us.
For each clan to protect their people from the evil that stepped out of these gates, distinct clans succumbed to these evil forces, exterminating weaker clans.
The elves, vampires, humans, and other distinct clans were all turned against each other. Their ability differs, probing a threat to their existence.
But in our darkest moment, the heavens blessed us with two SSS-ranked awakeners who stood as a rock to solidify the evils meant to take our clan. They led us to battle, they led us to glory.
This led to the destruction of diverse Earth's, wiping out multiple generations, but all this was to protect our people, our clan, and our heritage. Surviving clans transversed through dimensions, rebuilding the once lost world, a new earth— a new home.
Our nation; Nirvana, protected its people by building walls to keep the evil from prevailing over us as demons from the hell's gate had managed to fuse their souls into humans, taming and taking control of their minds.
This evil has continued to breed among us, blending in seamlessly, redefining humanity as they continue to breed with their kinds, taking more humans to form a host of their army which are meant to lead an attack on Nirvana once their annihilation was completed."
Kai stopped, taking a look at the now dead silent auditorium which was only disturbed by his voice.
Everyone was paying rapt attention to his words as they didn't dare try to force a distraction or miss the whole story.
"This academy was instituted to train a counter army against the evil prevailing within us. The awakening stone, a monument for our primate heritage, a reminder of what we used to be was reenacted in this world.
Every child gets three chances for awakening a talent. An ability that determines the faith of both his family and his future self. Seven, fourteen, and eighteen— the ages of awakening a talent or more talents.
With these talents, each and everyone of you gets a pivotal role in protecting Nirvana, a glorious fit for recognition and fulfillment."
The unending story was starting to dull the spirit of some students while some others managed to hide their yawn, hoping Kai would get straight up to the point as to why the elders of the academy were all present that day.
There was trouble— they knew that much, but to what extent? That they do not know.
"I reckon with your concerns about what is going on, students. With hopes that your training in respective fields is being well imbibed, I can assume that the fate of Nirvana will be well catered for in your care."
The students murmured amongst themselves, some wondering if they really could be a dependent figure for Nirvana or not. After all, they had only fought dungeon beasts and whatnot while the final years were once tasked with exterminating forces that claimed the human soul— just like Tzuyu.
"Hell's gate has begun to appear in various ends of Nirvana, again!" Kai suddenly announced, his words sending a bolt of fear into their being.
"What?!"
"The tempest we dread is happening again?"
"...we barely just made it into the academy… are we all going to die?"
"...does this mean— it is happening again?"
"Was there a trigger to this?"
"...how on earth did they find us again?" One girl cried, her knees quivering with drops of sweat pooling up on her forehead.
"They found us at first, it's no surprise they could do it again." A boy replied nonchalantly, seemingly not fazed by the news.
The group around him turned to face him, reading his expression and body language keenly as they wondered what part of the world he had purchased his audacity from.
"He gives me the creep!" Another girl shuddered, forcing her way through into another column, away from the boy.
A distraction at the center of the hall got to Kai, collecting his attention as they held up their hand for a question— it was Ace.
His brows arched in surprise before giving him the grace to speak.
"Could there be a reason for hell's gate first invasion? If there is, you leaders should know why they have come to attack this world again." He said, his tone cold and well chipped.
"Or are you not competent enough to keep these evils away despite your abilities?"
Kai turned his head to his side a little, surprised someone had dared raise a question no one had dared to ask since the first invasion.
Kai's face finally lit up with a smile, letting his cloak fall to the ground gracefully and it materialized into nothing, disappearing into a whisp smoke.
His gaze was firmly locked on Ace and this began to spark murmurs among the students as the tension from the gaze lingered further.
"Standing up against the elders too soon, are we?" Some murmured.
"...such a brat!..."
"He's changing the algorithm." Another marveled with a giggle.
"Doesn't give him the grace to stand against the leaders."
"But he sure just did open a door to question their incapability."
The auditorium suddenly fell silent, the one uprising murmuring drowning into nothingness.
Ace turned around, noticing everyone around him was stiff, not batting an eye, not breathing— someone had messed up with the perception of time, leaving him all alone as the only student living in that moment.
Ace turned back to face the podium, the awaiting eyes of Kai and the other elders clustered upon his being and Ace thought you himself with a smirk;
'Are they trying to make me shudder in fear?'
"You might want to try a new trick." He said.
Within a blink, Kai was already in front of him, his aura slamming through the frozen students as he arrived.
"Want to take a guess who has awakened the hell's gates, again?"
