He reached into his jacket, pulling out a gun. My breath caught, and my heart stopped as the man leveled it at Alex.
"Step away from the car," the man said, his voice firm.
Alex didn't move, his blue eyes locked on the man. "If you want me, take me. But leave her out of this."
The man's smile widened, his finger twitching on the trigger. "That's not how this works."
From inside the car, I screamed, "Alex! Don't!"
The man shifted his aim, pointing the gun toward me. The moment stretched, every second an eternity.
And then, without warning, the sound of screeching tires tore through the night. Another car appeared, its headlights blinding as it sped toward us. The man turned, distracted for a split second, and Alex lunged.
