"I don't handle HR matters," Alex replied nonchalantly.

How could he convey to her that despite Jeremy standing up for her, he was uncomfortable with their closeness?

Joanna, not naive, was determined not to let the issue go and pressed on.

"You transferred Colton, and now Jeremy has been promoted. What's your angle?"

She was not going to take it lightly, pondering how many other men might be affected by her actions.

The reason she was so certain it related to her was because Jeremy was fired because of her.

She had planned to reinstate him in his position and finally promote him after she meets the target set by grandpa, but Alex's plans overtook hers.

"He was fired from the Bakers and was qualified for the position the Kings offered. How is that a problem?" He was getting agitated, signaling for Ike to drive.

"I thought you didn't handle HR matters?" Joanna continued to press him as Ike drove, making Alex slightly nervous.
