Chương 67: Chapter 67 (edited)

Borrowing the super ingredients stored by the Wayne family, Kara prepared a sumptuous dinner by herself.

She wasn't afraid of waste at all, even using Wagyu beef to make brisket and persimmon soup.

Even Bruce shook his head in disapproval. Alfred commented that if she ever became the mistress of the Wayne family, the family's fortune might not last long.

After a belated dinner, Kara and Jennifer were invited to stay overnight. The Wayne Manor had plenty of space for guests.

Late at night, Kara was awakened by some unknown noises. Trying to ignore them, she got up, donning the silk nightgown Alfred had prepared for her, and wandered out to the hall.

Alfred had thoughtfully set out a variety of beverages on the table, including water and a bottle of red wine.

Kara glanced at the options and eventually chose a glass of water. Taking it with her, she moved to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pulling over a sofa to sit and admire the beautiful night view.

Her thoughts were filled with happiness for her friend Jennifer but also concern. Gotham City was far from achieving peace, and Kara knew the darkest hours always came before the dawn.

Jennifer didn't seem to understand how dangerous this time of night could be.

Then, soft footsteps echoed behind her.

Kara took a sip of her water and, without turning around, remarked, "I think it's about time you checked in with yourself."

Bruce, standing behind her, looked slightly embarrassed. He muttered, "I didn't expect her to be so..." but trailed off, unsure of what to say next.

"My Jennifer is a rare kind of person," Kara said suddenly, turning to face him. "She's pure-hearted, and the only person she's ever loved is you. You're definitely her first love. Don't disappoint her."

Bruce hesitated, then picked up a glass and poured himself some wine.

"I don't know..." Bruce began awkwardly after taking a sip of the drink.

Kara sneered. "Of course, you don't know. Back then, you were consumed by hatred and grief. You ignored everything else around you. And let's not forget Rachel—she was the one you loved, wasn't she?"

Bruce's discomfort grew under Kara's gaze. Hoping to shift the topic, he said, "Actually, Gordon recently brought some news about a mysterious—"

"It's better if you don't tell me," Kara interrupted impatiently. She stood up, placing her empty glass on the table. "And don't forget, Bruce, you and I are walking in opposite directions now. I won't help you anymore. You're on your own. Don't ever expect me to stand by and let you watch me take down those criminals again."

Bruce remained silent, the tension between them palpable.

They had clashed before regarding how to deal with Ra's al Ghul.

Both shared the same goal of combating crime, but their methods and philosophies were completely different.

Kara firmly believed in using force to eliminate threats permanently, advocating for rooting out evil at its core to prevent future harm.

Bruce, on the other hand, was committed to the principle that they had no right to act as judge, jury, or executioner. He believed in due process and the rule of law, no matter how flawed.

At that moment, Jennifer lay in Bruce's bed, blissfully unaware of the growing distance between her best friend and her love interest.

While Kara had subtly pushed for their relationship to grow, she remained deeply worried about Jennifer getting hurt.

Kara admired Bruce's moral principles but simultaneously despised his unwillingness to act decisively. It was a paradox that made cooperation between them impossible.

Turning away, Kara moved to leave the room, her steps as graceful as ever.

"By the way," she said abruptly, turning back toward Bruce. "Before I head back to Metropolis tomorrow, you'll need to take a few photos of me. I missed work for this little adventure, and I need something to explain why."

Bruce sighed, feeling utterly defeated.

Kara disappeared back into her room, hoping for a full night's rest. But early the next morning, she was rudely awakened.

Jennifer, already fully dressed, was sitting on the edge of her bed.

"Even if you're the new lady of Wayne Manor, this isn't how you're supposed to treat guests," Kara grumbled, rolling her eyes.

Jennifer blushed, clearly flustered, but didn't let Kara's teasing deter her.

"Let's go. We need to get back," Jennifer said, her voice hurried. "I'm supposed to start work tomorrow, and I still have to review the case files. My first trial is for someone from the Falcone family."

Jennifer's words tumbled out in a stream, her focus entirely on her work.

Kara blinked, looking at her friend in surprise.

Jennifer shot her an amused look. "What? You really thought I came here to lounge around? I'm here to work, Kara—not to become the mistress of Wayne Manor."

Her tone turned playful. "Besides, as you and Dani were so worried about, this thing with Bruce is over. It feels good to move on."

Kara laughed despite herself. "You let it go? Just like that?"

Jennifer shrugged. "I didn't want to be called an old spinster by Dani. And honestly? Falling for a 'god among men' isn't all it's cracked up to be."

Kara shook her head, bemused by this new, pragmatic side of Jennifer.

"Well," Jennifer added with a grin, "at least now I can focus on what really matters—bringing justice to Gotham."

Kara sighed, wrapping an arm around her friend. Whatever the future held, she would always support Jennifer—even if it meant watching from the sidelines.

Chương 68: Chapter 68 (edited)

It wasn't Kara who slept through the middle of the day; it was Bruce.

"Master Bruce, I think you really should check your body," Alfred said, entering Bruce's room with a tray of coffee and milk.

Bruce sat up, complaining helplessly, "Don't eavesdrop on my conversations with Kara."

Alfred shrugged. "You two almost had an argument last night. Even if I didn't want to hear it, I couldn't avoid it. The walls aren't soundproof."

Bruce didn't respond to Alfred's observation but asked instead, "Where are they?"

Although he didn't mention them by name, Alfred immediately understood that Bruce was referring to Kara and Jennifer. They were the only guests present yesterday apart from Bruce and Alfred himself.

"They've already left," Alfred informed him. "And they took your Lamborghini with them."

Bruce didn't seem to care about the car but was more interested in another detail. "Did Miss Jennifer leave anything?"

Alfred placed the tray on the bedside table and pulled out a small black item. It was a bat-shaped decoration, simple but iconic.

"She asked me to pass this on to you," Alfred said, handing it over.

"Does she already know who I am?" Bruce asked, examining the bat emblem carefully.

"No," Alfred replied, shaking his head. "But it seems she suspects something."

The black bat symbolized Batman. It wasn't unusual for people to draw connections between symbols, though Jennifer likely didn't know for sure about Bruce's alter ego. Still, the token seemed deliberate.

"There's also a letter," Alfred added suddenly, producing an envelope from the tray.

Bruce sighed, annoyed that such an important detail had been shared last. He opened the envelope, finding a handwritten letter from Jennifer inside.

"Bruce... Mr. Wayne, you are kind and far from the reckless playboy the world thinks you are. It brings me joy to see that the pain and sadness of your younger years no longer define you. I see the man you've become, and it makes me happy.

You don't need to play a role for anyone. Be yourself.

Kara once told me to bravely pursue happiness and love, and I've done just that. Now I give those same words to you.

If you truly care for Miss Rachel, don't let anything hold you back.

I've found what I was looking for, and I hope you will too.

Also, about last night... it was nice, but let's leave it at that."

Bruce frowned, reading the words carefully. He looked up at Alfred. "What does this mean?"

"I'd say, Master Wayne, that Miss Jennifer was kind enough to give you closure. To put it bluntly, she dumped you," Alfred replied with a wry smile.

Bruce scowled. "Did you have to phrase it like that? I mean, doesn't she like me? She's been in love with me for years—how could this happen?"

Alfred shrugged, his tone neutral. "Because she realized you're already spoken for. She saw something last night that confirmed it for her. You should know better than anyone."

Bruce thought about it for a moment before the realization hit him.

Rachel.

Meanwhile, at Jennifer's house

Kara wasn't happy. She jabbed Jennifer's forehead lightly with her finger, frustrated. "Seriously? You just let it go like that? After everything? Are you out of your mind?"

Jennifer smirked. "It's because I've experienced it that I can let it go. Otherwise, it would haunt me forever. You wouldn't understand."

Kara gritted her teeth. "I'm trying to stand up for you here!"

Jennifer waved it off and redirected her attention to a pile of documents. "If you have so much time to nag me, help me organize these files instead."

The documents were work-related, specifically about her upcoming trials against Gotham's criminals. Jennifer had recently moved to Gotham City, and this case was her first major assignment as a prosecutor.

As she sifted through the evidence, Jennifer found a business card that Harvey Dent had given her the night before. She decided to contact him.

Harvey was Gotham's District Attorney, and he would be handling the prosecution for her upcoming trial.

During their phone call, Jennifer and Harvey discussed their case strategies, focusing on how to secure the maximum sentence possible for their defendant.

Although Gotham didn't have the death penalty, they aimed for life imprisonment.

Kara observed Jennifer quietly, her expression a mix of amusement and disbelief. "You know, if anyone overheard your conversation, both you and Harvey would be in big trouble. You're walking a very fine line."

Jennifer shrugged, unbothered. "This is Gotham. Things work differently here."

Kara helped Jennifer prepare by gathering evidence, including incriminating details about the Falcone family. Despite their efforts, they knew witnesses were crucial.

"The witness testimony will make or break the case," Kara reminded her. "If the witness changes their story in court, it'll get messy."

Jennifer took notes and discussed strategies with Harvey.

When the trial eventually began, their fears were realized—the witness recanted on the stand.

But Jennifer and Harvey had anticipated this, presenting alternative evidence that upheld their case.

The head of the Falcone family was convicted, though not to life imprisonment. He received a ten-year sentence.

Kara handed Jennifer her keys.

Jennifer smirked. "Take my car when you get back to Metropolis. And return Bruce Wayne's Lamborghini while you're at it. Next time you're in Gotham, we'll switch back."

Kara hesitated, looking at Jennifer intently. "Have you really let go?"

Jennifer shrugged, her focus already back on her work. "As you can see, I'm very busy."

And with that, Kara left Gotham, still wondering if Jennifer truly meant what she said.
