Seventeen years ago, a truck hit me, and somehow I ended up here in Sinnoh.
The beginning was tough; it was a miracle. As an orphan in both lives, it was hard to manage on my own, but at least I was used to it.
At least I didn't have to explain to anyone why I was so mature for my age.
In this world, my parents died in a car accident, which I cursed. You live in a world filled with beasts with superpowers, and you end up dying in a car accident.
On the other hand, I was very happy when I reincarnated in the world of Pokémon. It wasn't as idyllic as I imagined, but at least you could go on adventures at 16, as long as you had enough money to pay for a Trainer ID and maintain at least one Pokémon with your salary.
As you can see, this world is not a utopia.
Fortunately, my new parents were financially stable, so I only had to wait until I turned 16 to start my adventure.
I spent the first year forming a team and teaching them useful moves. I couldn't go to a tournament with just Water Gun like Ash.
I convinced several Pokémon to strengthen themselves under my guidance and taught them competitive moves I had used when playing Pokémon Showdown or Pokémon MMO.
The results were immediate; I was unbeatable.
But at a certain cost.
I left the waiting room and headed toward the center of the stadium where I was.
I wasn't alone; I had my trusty Murkrow on my shoulder.
"BOOOOO!"
"GET OUT!"
"LEAVE!"
I ducked to dodge a can and smiled.
They adore me.
Maybe they don't like my calculated strategies.
They prefer brute strength.
I showed them my middle finger with a laugh, which seemed to infuriate the crowd even more, something my Murkrow found amusing.
Screw them; I need the money. Feeding a Pokémon isn't free.
"WELCOME BACK TO THE LILY VALLEY CONFERENCE OF THE SINNOH LEAGUE. NOW WE WILL PRESENT THE PARTICIPANTS."
"ON ONE SIDE, WE HAVE ONE OF THE FAVORITES OF THIS TOURNAMENT, EDRIC STORM, WITH HIS GENERALIST TEAM."
The ground shook beneath my feet. It seemed I would face a famous person.
"ANYTHING TO ADD, BEATRIZ?"
"OF COURSE, MANOLO. HIS POWERFUL DRAPION IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE STRONGEST POKÉMON, WITH 78 WINS AND 1 LOSS. AND HE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE ASHAMED OF THAT LOSS, AS HE LOST TO THE LEGENDARY Tamer TOBIAS, A NAME THAT INSPIRES FEAR AND RESPECT IN SINNOH; THEY SAY THAT DRAPION IS STRONGER THAN ELITE FOUR AARON'S."
So Tobias existed in this universe; unfortunately, I hated that guy. He only existed to make Ash lose.
If you're wondering why he isn't the Champion of Sinnoh instead of Cynthia, no one knows. It's speculated that it's because his legendary Pokémon don't want to. It's said that Tobias releases them when the competition ends and then recaptures them.
"ON THE OTHER SIDE, A MYSTERIOUS FIGURE, AHEM AHEM, ALSO A GENERALIST TRAINER, WHO HAS CAUSED CONTROVERSY FOR HIS UNSPORTSMANLIKE STRATEGIES, COUTE VI BRITANIA. BEATRIZ, ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY?"
"NO, NOT MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HIM, JUST THAT IF HE WINS, HE LOSES THE SPORT."
I rolled my eyes. How exaggerated.
Ah, right, I forgot to greet.
I waved, and waves of boos erupted.
Haha, funny.
Some reporters approached to interview me before the match.
"Coute, how do you feel about reaching the Top 64 at such a young age? Your last two matches caused quite a stir among the audience, that's for sure."
This tournament had 256 participants, so winning two rounds meant there were 64 participants left.
Time to play the part.
"I feel nothing, reporter. My previous opponents were weak. They couldn't handle a simple poisoning tactic."
I used Vaporeon with Wish, Protect, and Toxic...
And made them wait 45 and 43 minutes to finish the battle, the longest Pokémon battle in history, they said. Whiners.
It was true that they were weak; others' Pokémon were usually taught moves they learned by leveling up; it was very easy to defeat them; they didn't know their Pokémon's potential and lacked data.
"The first one you faced was a veteran with 10 years of experience."
"I don't care about the stories of the weak."
"Is there anyone you want to greet for getting this far?"
"No, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to win this."
"One more thing. I noticed you used Murkrow, since you have it on your shoulder. Are you so confident in your victory?"
Underestimating my Murkrow, typical. In this world, they were just starting to discover hidden abilities, and the crow Pokémon was simply seen as a bad omen.
"Not at all. If I'm carrying Murkrow, it means I'm serious."
The reporter looked at me confused but said nothing more.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
I saw Edric going through a similar situation, with reporters crowding around him before the match.
Minutes passed, and finally, the referee gave the signal.
"The match will be three against three in a grass field. Begin!"
Knowing this guy, he would send out Drapion to avoid being poisoned by my Vaporeon.
"Drapion" "Shuckle"
"OH, THIS TIME COUTE HAS BROUGHT OUT ANOTHER POKÉMON! IS THAT A SHUCKLE?"
Shuckle was not seen as a combat Pokémon.
"Pin Missile."
Several projectiles hit Shuckle, who withstood them.
"Stealth Rock."
As always, my loyal Shuckle set the rocks on the field.
"Get closer and use X-Scissor."
"Sticky Web quickly."
Once the traps were set, Drapion moved dangerously close to Shuckle.
"Don't stop attacking."
"Find the right moment and use Infestation."
A third X-Scissor pushed Shuckle, and at that moment, a green sphere hit Drapion.
"WHAT WAS THAT MOVE? FIRST HIS INFAMOUS VAPOREON WITH THE RARE TOXIC MOVE, NOW A SHUCKLE WITH EQUALLY STRANGE MOVES."
Infestation was an unknown move in this world.
Good, Shuckle had already done his job.
"Switch, Shuckle. Go, Gliscor."
"NOW HE'S BROUGHT OUT GLISCOR. WHAT IS COUTE THINKING?"
"Do your best, Pin Missile!" Edric shouted.
"Toxic on yourself," I ordered, surprising everyone in the stadium.
"WHY IS HE POISONING HIS OWN POKÉMON?!"
They didn't know about Gliscor's hidden ability, Poison Heal.
Once Gliscor recovered from Pin Missile, I gave the next order.
"Now Earthquake."
Gliscor dropped to the ground, and once it touched the earth, it turned brown. The area beneath Drapion's feet exploded, knocking it out.
In this world, Pokémon had a natural barrier around them called aura, like in RWBY; when that aura runs out, the Pokémon faints. Thanks to this, there are practically no deaths in Pokémon battles.
"Drapion is unable to battle. The winner is Gliscor. 3-2."
Now Drapion had one more loss in its record.
"CAN GLISCOR LEARN EARTHQUAKE?"
After a few seconds, Edric sent out his second Pokémon.
"Go, Rhydon."
A huge Rhydon entered the field, greeted by some rocks and a speed reduction.
"Quick, Stone Edge before it flies."
Rhydon's arms were covered in rocks.
"Earthquake."
The ground beneath Rhydon exploded again, but not before Rhydon hit Gliscor with a Stone Edge.
"BOTH POKÉMON HAVE SUFFERED. LET'S SEE WHO RISES."
The answer was Gliscor, as it healed due to being poisoned.
"With that, 2 Pokémon are out. Edric has only one left. 3-1."
The so-called Edric was furious; I could see it on his face.
"You can do it, Lucario."
"A LUCARIO! ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR POKÉMON IN THE WORLD. TODAY WE ARE ALL LUCKY TO SEE THIS MAJESTIC POKÉMON. CAN IT TURN THE BATTLE AROUND?"
Hmm, my own Lucario would be mad for not being used here.
The answer I would give to the commentator is no; my Gliscor is Ground/Flying, and Lucario is Steel/Fighting.
But well, I ignored that thought and warned my Pokémon.
"Gliscor, don't get cocky. Victory is never assured."
"Glisc," my Gliscor smiled and nodded.
"Aura Sphere."
"Down."
"Don't let it touch the ground, Extreme Speed."
On one side, Extreme Speed hit. On the other, Gliscor touched the ground, creating another powerful Earthquake.
Lucario suffered the same fate as its teammates.
"3-0. Coute wins."
This time, the crowd applauded, not very loudly due to my strategy with Vaporeon, but they begrudgingly accepted Gliscor's performance.
I saw Edric. He wasn't okay. If looks could kill, he'd already be six feet under.
I thought it was better not to talk
to him.
"AND WE HAVE A WINNER! The new trainer advances to the Top 32, while the veteran loses this round."
"NOW LET'S SEE THE MATCHUPS FOR THE FOURTH ROUND!"
I waved to the crowd and looked at the screen since this was the last match of the third round.
I saw the names, spinning randomly, pairing participants; I was matched with someone named Alexander.
But the ones I was interested in were three names: Aaron, Barry, and Dawn.
Of the three, the last two were the most intimidating.
I didn't expect to cross paths with the protagonist and the rival in my first tournament. Had they already defeated Cyrus?
Also, what was an Elite Four doing here? Aaron should be with his bugs somewhere else.
Either way, I'd use all my tricks and win this.
