Karuizawa Kei had been secretly glancing at him, and Hikigaya could more or less guess the reason behind it.
The previous night, he had spent a long time talking to her about the importance of points, suggesting she save them as much as possible for emergencies.
This advice revealed Hikigaya's capabilities to Karuizawa and, in doing so, completely changed her future.
Under normal circumstances, Karuizawa, like the rest of Class D, would have been panicking over the class points system introduced by their homeroom teacher, Chabashira.
She would have squandered all her remaining points days ago, leaving herself with nothing for the upcoming month.
However, thanks to Hikigaya's intervention, she returned the clothes and makeup she bought.
As a result, she now had a decent amount of points in her account, enough to handle the upcoming school crisis.
This sudden change of fate left Karuizawa's emotions in turmoil, like riding a roller coaster that spun her around 360 degrees. She couldn't calm down easily. At the same time, she would undoubtedly feel immense gratitude toward Hikigaya, who had saved her from disaster.
Of course, Hikigaya himself wasn't looking for any kind of gratitude. Everything he did, in the end, was merely for his satisfaction.
After all, he was never anyone's hero.
Meanwhile, the rest of Class D had been thrown into utter chaos by the harsh reality they were facing. The students had split into two main groups.
The first group included students like Ike and Yamauchi. They weren't particularly concerned about being the lowest-ranked class in the first year. Instead, their worry stemmed from the fact that they wouldn't receive any points for the next month. It was hard to imagine how they would get through such a situation.
The second group, represented by Horikita Suzune, simply couldn't accept being labeled as the worst students, sharing the same classroom as what she deemed the "trash" of Class D.
Her frustration was so overwhelming that her sharp tongue was firing on all cylinders. Hikigaya could feel the venom in her gaze as if she was looking at something utterly worthless, and he dared not provoke her.
Naturally, Horikita wasn't the only one who harbored such feelings. Many of the students who considered themselves "elite" were struggling to accept the reality of their situation.
"Does this mean we'll be looked down on by everyone else now?" someone suddenly asked.
Surprisingly, it was Sudou Ken, the red-haired delinquent, who had been the first to speak. With a loud bang, he kicked over a desk, making his dissatisfaction clear.
Chabashira, however, was completely unfazed. In her usual mocking tone, she responded, "What's this, Sudou? Even you care about appearances now? If so, then work hard and help the class move up."
"Huh?"
Not only Sudou but the entire class was taken aback by her words.
"It seems you all finally understand," Chabashira said with a satisfied nod as if addressing a group of sheep who had finally grasped something. "Class points aren't just tied to the personal points you receive every month. These points also determine the ranking of the classes."
"In other words, if your class points exceed those of higher-ranked classes, you can replace them, becoming Class C, Class B, or even Class A!"
Chabashira's words, laced with a hint of encouragement, quickly sparked the imaginations of many in Class D.
Although the majority of them couldn't reach Class A, humans are naturally inclined to dream of reaching the top.
Hikigaya shook his head.
He saw right through Chabashira's tactics.
It was a simple case of using the carrot and the stick. First, she had crushed their spirits with the reality of the point difference, and now she was giving them hope of climbing out of their predicament, ensuring they wouldn't fall into complete despair.
It was like dangling a carrot in front of a rabbit.
Even if the rabbit could never actually reach the carrot, the mere sight of it was enough to keep it motivated.
However, Chabashira wasn't about to let Class D get lost in their fantasies. She quickly brought them back down to earth with another blow.
"There's one more unfortunate piece of news I must share with you."
She pulled out another sheet of paper, listing all the students in the class along with a set of numbers beside each name. "As expected of Class D, a group filled with idiots. But even idiots can understand what these numbers represent, right?"
With a smirk, Chabashira glanced at the students and continued with a calm voice, "These are the results from the last mock exam. You all did wonderfully. I'm proud of you. What exactly did you learn in middle school?"
Most of the students had scored around 60 points.
Apart from Hikigaya and Horikita, who had scored around 85, the only other student who managed to get above 90 was the class genius, Yukimura Teruhiko.
It was clear that he had at least answered one of the three absurdly difficult questions correctly.
It's worth mentioning that Koenji's score was among the highest—an impressive 90 points, the same as Yukimura's. His score demonstrated that, despite his wild, unrefined appearance, he possessed an unexpectedly high level of intelligence.
Truly worthy of being called Dio-sama!
However, what caught Hikigaya's attention even more was Ayanokouji's score. Scanning the list from the top, it took him a while to locate Ayanokouji Kiyotaka's name, which appeared somewhere in the middle.
A perfect 60 points!
Hikigaya couldn't help but suspect that this guy was deliberately controlling his score. No, scratch that—he had to be controlling it!
While amused by the thought, Hikigaya also noticed how abysmal Class D's overall performance was. A whole group of underperformers dragged the average score down miserably.
Sudo Ken had 14 points, Ike Kanji 24 points, and Yamauchi Haruki... Leave it, this is too pitiful to look at even for me.
When Hikigaya saw these names, he completely understood why Chabashira Sae, their homeroom teacher, was so indifferent toward Class D.
It was like a dumpster for rejects.
He silently scoffed to himself as Chabashira continued speaking from the front of the classroom, her tone calm and unbothered. "To be honest, you should consider yourselves lucky. If this were an official test, seven of you would have been expelled just now."
"What?!"
"Expelled?!"
"Wait, what's going on?!"
"Oh, didn't I mention it before?" Chabashira said nonchalantly, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. "At this school, if you fail even one subject in the midterms or final exams, you'll be expelled. For this particular test, anyone scoring below 32 points would be subject to expulsion. Heh, you all really are quite foolish, aren't you?"
Her words sent shockwaves through Class D. In an instant, the classroom erupted into chaos, the students resembling a colony of ants that had just been set on fire.
Hikigaya, watching this scene unfold, couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction rise within him.
After enduring a whole month of torment from these Class D fools, he had long since run out of sympathy for them. Seeing these idiotic, oblivious people fall into despair filled him with a twisted sense of joy. Today's lunch was definitely going to taste twice as good because of it!
In the end, happiness really does come from watching others suffer, doesn't it?
