Hikigaya didn't respond directly to Horikita Suzune's confusion. Instead, he kept his calm expression, looking ahead, and replied casually, "The answer to that question... I'll tell you after listening to what Chabashira-sensei has to say."
"Hmph, I didn't expect you to be so cryptic all of a sudden." Horikita scowled, clearly annoyed.
Hikigaya let out a small sigh of helplessness.
It wasn't that he enjoyed acting mysterious. He just couldn't reveal the answer yet. They needed to wait for Sensei Chabashira to finish her explanation first.
And so, the two sitting at adjacent desks fell into a silent lull, waiting for the developments in the classroom.
The atmosphere in Class D had grown heavy. Under the weight of Chabashira's imposing presence, the entire class was shrouded in a long, stifling silence. Each student's face showed signs of discomfort as they began to realize that the reality they had been living in was about to be shattered.
"By now, you all have a rough understanding of the point system, right?" Chabashira's mocking voice broke the silence. "Good, then let's move on to the real topic."
With a smirk, she pulled out a large sheet of white paper from a poster tube and pinned it to the blackboard using magnets.
The students could barely process what was happening before they found themselves staring blankly at the sheet.
"Is this... the class rankings?" Horikita was the first to recognize what the sheet represented.
Hikigaya followed her gaze, eyes landing on the names of the four classes, A through D, alongside a series of numbers.
At the bottom was Class D, with a score of zero. Above them, Class C had 490 points, Class B boasted 650, and at the top, Class A held an impressive 940 points.
If Hikigaya's guess was right, these were the class points, with each point representing 100 personal points. A thousand class points meant a monthly allocation of 100,000 personal points.
"Hey, don't you think this looks a bit too neat?" Horikita's voice came from behind him, her sharp eyes immediately catching onto the pattern.
Of course, she noticed it right away. Horikita wasn't one to miss the key details.
Hikigaya nodded to himself in agreement, but his response remained as evasive as ever.
"Yeah, it's neat... Maybe it's just a coincidence?"
"You..."
Horikita knew Hikigaya was playing dumb, but she had no energy to argue with him right now. She closed her mouth, unwilling to waste more breath on him.
From the podium, Chabashira Sensei resumed speaking.
"For the past month, you've all been living carefree lives. Whether it was arriving late or chatting during class, everything you did had consequences. And now, the bill is due."
"As for the points you were given, how you chose to use them was entirely up to you. But since you all decided to indulge in a life of excess, you'll have to face the price that comes with that choice."
Her words cast a heavy silence over the room once more. Most of the students understood by now—this was the result of their irresponsibility.
Yet, among them, Ike Kanji and Yamauchi Haruki, two of the most oblivious students in Class D, let out groans of despair.
"This is too much!" Ike cried out.
"How are we supposed to survive like this?!" Yamauchi followed suit.
There was no doubt—both of their personal point balances had dropped to zero by now.
"Heh," Chabashira's chuckle was filled with sarcasm as if she had been waiting for this exact outburst. "You brought this on yourselves. Ten thousand yen can easily last a cautious high schooler three or four months. But you people? You blew through your initial points recklessly, and now you face the consequences."
"And don't forget, while you were wasting your points, the other classes were collecting theirs. They've earned more than enough to live comfortably for the month."
"Why do the other classes still have points?" Hirata Yosuke, ever the calm and level-headed leader, couldn't help but ask. "How could the point disparity between classes be this huge?"
"This is exactly why you were placed in Class D," Chabashira responded, her voice dripping with condescension. Finally, she revealed the harsh truth about the school's ranking system.
"Placed in Class D? Isn't it just random?" Some students exchanged confused glances, not understanding the significance.
"Of course not. This school ranks students according to their abilities. The best go-to is Class A, while the... less capable... end up in Class D. Simply put, you're the rejects. The school's failures."
Instantly, chaos erupted in the classroom.
Horikita's face stiffened, her expression freezing as if struck by a sudden realization. She couldn't comprehend why she, of all people, had been placed in the lowest class. And she certainly couldn't accept it.
Hikigaya, on the other hand, felt nothing. He found comfort in the situation. Being in Class D meant they'd already hit rock bottom. Things couldn't get any worse.
No pressure at all.
"Heh, you've managed to lose all your points in just one month. Even among past Class D's, you're a first. Impressive, really," Chabashira's sarcastic applause sent a chill down the spines of the students.
Hirata, keeping his composure, asked the critical question. "So, if our class points remain at zero, we won't receive any personal points for the rest of our time here?"
"Exactly. Unless you raise your class points, your monthly point distribution will stay at zero until you graduate. But don't worry, your dorm rooms are free, and there's always free food. You won't starve."
Her reassurance did nothing to ease the tension in the room.
Though basic survival was guaranteed, the thought of living with the bare minimum after having experienced such luxury in the first month felt like a slap in the face for most of the students. The sudden plunge from heaven to hell was unbearable.
"So what's the deal with the free food, huh?" Horikita gritted her teeth as she spoke, still fixated on the fact that she had been placed in Class D. She couldn't let it go.
Hikigaya, sensing her frustration, tried to console her. "Horikita, as bad as things are right now, there's a silver lining: it can't get worse."
"Are you mocking me? Just a Class D student!" Horikita snapped.
"You're in Class D too, you know!"
Hikigaya hadn't expected Horikita to unleash her sharp tongue even in a situation like this.
She truly was a venomous person, even beyond the level of a "boss-level" villain.
As Hikigaya entertained himself by watching his classmates' reactions, he suddenly noticed someone's gaze on him.
Wait a minute... Why is Karuizawa Kei staring at me?
He couldn't help but feel unnerved. Hikigaya wasn't exactly handsome, so what could she possibly be looking at?
Great, just what I needed—another ridiculous misunderstanding. If anyone else noticed this, I'd probably get labeled a playboy or something.
Ridiculous...
