Chương 51: Could Suzune Horikita Be a Tsundere?

Chabashira Sae quickly walked up to the podium, casting a glance around the classroom, though her presence barely elicited a reaction from anyone.

Class D was still a cacophony of noise and chatter.

"Quiet down! Today, I need all of you to pay a bit more attention in class!"

Her slightly stern tone finally caught the students' attention. Surprised, they looked up at the woman standing at the front.

"Sae-sensei, what's going on?" Some students, having grown too familiar with her lenient attitude over the past few weeks, even began addressing her by her first name.

"Because the end of the month is here, we'll be having a short quiz… Pass these back."

Under Chabashira's instruction, everyone soon had a test paper in front of them, Hikigaya included.

He glanced at the quiz. It covered five main subjects: Japanese, Math, English, Chemistry, and Social Studies, each with a few short questions. It was a minor test.

"What? I didn't hear anything about a quiz! This is so unfair!" Ike Kanji whined loudly from across the room, his voice echoing the sentiment of most of the class, who were just as surprised by this pop quiz.

"Relax. This test is just for reference; it won't affect your grades. There's no risk, so don't worry. But even so, cheating is forbidden."

Chabashira's unexpectedly patient and gentle demeanor was in stark contrast to what Hikigaya had seen of her in private. It sent an eerie shiver down his spine.

So, she's really one of those sadistic types, huh?

It seemed like this school wasn't just full of strange students—teachers were no exception.

Hikigaya quickly grasped the deeper meaning behind her words.

"This test will serve as a reference for the future…" The key was in that statement. In a test with no immediate consequences, the only possible purpose would be something long-term.

What exactly that reference might be, Hikigaya figured he'd understand better after finishing the test.

Hopefully, it wouldn't be too much of a hassle...

With a sigh, Hikigaya steeled himself, displaying an unusual level of focus.

The test began, and he scanned through the questions. Each subject had four questions, totaling twenty. Each question was worth five points, making a perfect score of 100.

The surprising thing was, that the questions were incredibly easy—far easier than the entrance exams. They seemed more suitable for elementary school students.

So simple? Did this school have a sudden change of heart?

As he moved through the test, perplexed by the simplicity, he suddenly encountered the last three questions—each one drastically harder than the rest.

It felt like going from a basic 1+1 equation to a university-level calculus problem.

He managed to answer the Japanese question, but the other two, a math problem and an English question, were way beyond his knowledge base.

So, what was the point of this test?

Chabashira said it would be used as a reference for the future, but what exactly was that future?

Midterms?

Finals?

Hikigaya had a vague feeling this could lead to something troublesome. After several futile attempts to solve the final two math and English questions, he gave up.

There was no way a high school student could solve these kinds of questions, right?

Well... considering the number of weirdos at this school, maybe someone could...

With another sigh, Hikigaya wrote "solution" at the start of the math problem, then immediately abandoned it, leaving the rest of the paper blank.

The bell rang soon after.

Hikigaya collected the test paper from the desk behind him—Suzune Horikita's—and couldn't resist sneaking a peek at her answers.

As expected, she'd completed every question. However, just like him, she'd struggled with the last three, though her calm expression suggested she wasn't the least bit bothered. If you didn't know better, you'd think she was aiming for a perfect score.

"Peeking at someone else's paper? Are you asking for me to blast you with a Destruction Beam?"

"N-No… not at all."

Startled by Horikita's sudden remark, Hikigaya felt as though a death ray was already being charged behind him.

Terrifying. This woman is terrifying!

Even scarier than my middle school homeroom teacher, Hiratsuka Shizuka!

After handing in the test papers, Hikigaya was about to bury his nose in a book when Horikita's voice broke the silence.

"What did you think of the test?"

"Passing should be easy."

"Agreed." Horikita, for once, acknowledged his point. "But those last three questions were unusually difficult. I doubt any high schooler could get full marks."

"Someone might surprise you."

As Hikigaya spoke, he glanced over at Ayanokouji. But the latter was too engrossed in goofing off with the three idiots to notice.

Horikita didn't seem to catch his meaning.

"You've been missing from class a lot lately. Have you become so much of a loner that you can't even stand being in the classroom?"

"I just like being by myself."

Hikigaya didn't feel the need to explain. He didn't want anyone to find out about his involvement with the student council.

Yes, the reason for his frequent absences was that he had to handle various tasks for the student council. More often than not, he had to bolt out of class the moment the bell rang.

It wasn't surprising that this caught Horikita's attention, but Hikigaya had no reasonable explanation, so he simply avoided the subject.

"Don't tell me… you got a girlfriend?"

Horikita suddenly threw out a ridiculous guess.

"No! Why would you even think that?!" Hikigaya immediately denied it.

"Just thought it wouldn't be surprising if a guy like you had a girlfriend."

"It's totally surprising, okay? In fact, I don't need a girlfriend at all. I hate having my time stolen by someone else. If a girlfriend ever called me in the middle of the night to cry about something, I'd break up with her on the spot!"

Hikigaya didn't bother hiding his disdain for romantic relationships.

"That does seem like something you'd do."

Horikita nodded, unfazed by his rather appalling words.

This surprised Hikigaya. Normally, a girl would be wide-eyed in shock, muttering something about him being the enemy of all women.

Horikita, though... could she be...

"At least, in this regard, I don't dislike your personality."

Horikita's unexpected comment left Hikigaya stunned.

Wait, does not disliking mean…?

No way, could Suzune Horikita, this sharp-tongued weirdo, actually be a tsundere?
