Chương 2: Chapter 2 Escape

"What in the..."

"So this must really be a dream.."

"THE FUCK!"

The people around Atlas had varying reactions, but they were all anchored in one emotion. Fear. Whether it was the random gym rat who was standing by himself, or the military veteran that Atlas spotted out of the corner of his eyes, everyone's first instinct was not to fight but simply to flee.

"B-Bud what are we going to do?" Atlas muttered turning towards his new friend. But Bud simply stood there frozen. It was obvious that his mind was crumbling at the moment. Immediately Atlas slapped him.

"Oww, fuck!" Bud yelped. "We have to get moving or are you just gonna stand here and become Ogre chow." Hearing this along with the slap Bud came back to his senses a bit. The people around them were likewise still in a panic but fortunately the ogres had yet to move after emerging from the forest.

Atlas' eyes began darting around. They were currently in a plain, behind them was simply more of a plain, while ahead of them was a forest and 5 ogres. 'We can't beat them. They're over 4 meters tall and we have no weapons....but there's 5 of them and 100 of us.....' As his mind raced the young man soon came to a conclusion.

"We have to run Bud!" Saying that Atlas began running, and run he did with all his strength. Naturally away from the Ogres and towards the endless plains behind. Immediately Bud to ran after Atlas, and this seemed to cause a chain reaction.

"Fuck this I am not dying!"

"Maybe you guys can fight those things but I won't!"

"I have a bad leg, please someone save me!"

Of the 100 people, 80 of them began running after Atlas. Those who didn't run either physically couldn't, or had mentally collapsed.

"AWRGHHH!"

Seeing their prey run off, the Ogres immediately dashed forward. While not terribly fast, they were definitely quicker than one might imagine. In a little over 15 seconds they reached the stragglers who hadn't ran away.

"P-Please do.." His head was crushed under and Ogre's club before he could finish his sentence. Naturally the rest of the 20 people were dispatched in much the same way. Either their entire body was reduced to paste, their head knocked off their shoulders, or another form of gruesome injury.

Hearing the grotesque sounds Atlas turned backwards and his face paled. '...I-I have to keep running!' He thought to himself as he charged ahead. At this point he had settled at the front but some people had overtook him. But at the end of the day being the fastest was pointless, he just had to not be the slowest.

"THUMP!"

"THUMP!"

"THUMP!"

"W-What is this?" The person who had ran ahead questioned. He had seemingly ran into something. "A barrier..." Bud muttered as he and Atlas caught up to them. There was a pale blue light blocking them from passing.

Someone even tried punching it, alas it didn't even shake. "We can't just stay here they'll catch up to us soon." A woman to the side cried in exasperation. 'There's at most a minute until they catch up to us....fuck it if I can't go forward go left!'

With that decision Atlas took off to the left. Bud followed after him, refusing to stay within the big group acting as prey. But soon after the rest followed anyway, and Atlas and Bud ended up within the middle of the pack.

'Fortunately it seems the barrier isn't circular otherwise the Ogres would catch up to us.' Out of the corner of his eye he was tracking the Ogres. After killing those 20 people they immediately began running after them again, but since they took off to the left the distance between them continued to widen.

'I am starting to get tired....' Atlas realised, his legs beginning to slow. In fact those ahead of Atlas had also began to slow down and had clearly gotten tired. 'I need to adjust my pace otherwise I'll waste all my stamina.'

For 10 minutes the group continued to run, but it was clear they were growing tired. Most of their sedentary life styles hadn't built them for this continuous strenuous activity and there were those who continued to lag further and further behind.

"AHHH SAVE MEE!"

The Ogres had finally managed to pick off another person. But that wasn't the last. One after the other those who had been left behind were taken out by the ogres, eventually another 10 or so people were killed, leaving only 70 of the original 100 alive.

'We can't go on like this, even my legs are beginning to give way. I think the only thing we can do is enter the forest...' Atlas surmised. It could be that there were worse threats in there, but right now it was their only option. Maybe if they had stood their ground and fought the Ogres they would've had a slight chance but Atlas wasn't willing to bet his life on that possibility.

Deviating his path, Atlas burst with as much speed as he could towards the forest. 'This is the only way.' They had created enough of a gap to which it was unlikely the Ogres could catch up before he made it into the forest, additionally he hoped they'd prioritise the others over him.

"What the fuck are you doing Atlas?!" Bud shouted not understanding why he was running into the forest. In his eyes its unknown danger presented more of a threat than the Ogres. But Atlas didn't bother to reply. Speaking would waste energy and there was no time to convince Bud of his plans.

Seeing him run towards the forest the remaining people simply saw him as suicidal but it wasn't Atlas' job to explain his reasoning.
