Chương 65: Chapter 82: More Abnormal Than a Psychopath

After exchanging glances, Yin Zhixiu felt somewhat uneasy. The mother in front of her seemed oddly unsettling.

Fortunately, the elevator dinged, signaling that it had arrived on Yin Zhixiu's floor.

Seconds later, the elevator doors opened. An Shanying, pushing a baby stroller, entered the elevator. When she saw that Yin Zhixiu hadn't followed her in, she asked, "Aren't you coming with us?"

Yin Zhixiu's mind raced as she quickly made up an excuse.

Once the elevator doors had fully closed, Yin Zhixiu asked in confusion, "What's up with that auntie?"

"She's a good person," came a slightly magnetic male voice from the side. It was Zheng Zai Xian, wearing oval glasses and an old-fashioned suit that made him look a bit stiff. Zheng Zai Xian was a language teacher and also a pastor.

He then explained the accident that An Shanying had experienced.

"She lost her child last year. Due to a moment of negligence, the stroller she was pushing rolled into the road."

He stopped there, not continuing further.

"How tragic…" Yin Zhixiu sighed. As for the details of the accident's aftermath, she could easily guess. After all, it was normal for a mother to suffer such a blow and subsequently experience mental distress.

"Although the Lord occasionally gives us insurmountable trials, it doesn't mean we can't overcome them."

"These are all signs from God."

"Hello, I'm Zheng Zai Xian."

With that, Zheng Zai Xian extended his right hand to Yin Zhixiu. Not particularly interested in the middle-aged man, especially one who spoke in such a mystical manner, Yin Zhixiu gave a polite, forced smile, put her hands in her pockets, and bowed slightly. "I'm Yin Zhixiu. Nice to meet you."

It must be said that Koreans really love to bow.

Cyrus often encountered people bowing to him and asking his name just by going up or down the stairs.

Of course, Cyrus himself wasn't into bowing; he generally preferred nodding.

At that moment, he was preparing to take the elevator to the first floor. When the elevator doors slowly opened, a scarred man in a striped shirt appeared. The man, with his head lowered and leaning against the elevator wall, had clear burn scars on his face.

"Bian Shangyu," Cyrus said as he stepped into the elevator and stood next to the scarred man.

Bian Shangyu, leaning against the wall, slowly raised his head to look at Cyrus, his eyes showing a hint of indifference.

He was an assassin, a killer who had little regard for legal systems.

The reason he was at the Green Garden Apartments was due to a child abduction case. At the request of the victim's father, who had no faith in the authorities and the legal system, Bian Shangyu was here to bring justice himself.

Following the clues, he had tracked the case to the Green Garden Apartments.

"Who are you?" Bian Shangyu leaned back slightly, subtly positioning himself to strike if necessary.

"I'm just like you," Cyrus replied with a faint smile. He extended his hands, performing a clapping gesture. As his hands parted, a series of metal-glinted scalpels appeared, almost as if by magic. "As you can see, I'm also an assassin. You can call me a doctor."

"Are you here to kill me?" Bian Shangyu immediately sensed that Cyrus was a formidable opponent just from his earlier display of skill.

In fact, Cyrus's intention to go to the first floor was to find the security guard. He had a new idea: if different desires could transform infected people into different monsters, could he, by altering the desires of these individuals, cultivate the specific abilities he wanted?

Of course, this was just a hypothesis.

Desire itself isn't a concrete concept; people have many kinds of desires. Thus, desire isn't the sole factor in becoming an infected person. In Cyrus's view, to become an infected individual, the following conditions must be met: first, extreme emotional breakdown or being on the verge of it; second, despair towards the world or oneself; third, having a single, strong desire and being compliant with it.

Originally, Cyrus intended to experiment with changing the security guard's desire.

However, he figured the chances were slim because the guard was already an infected person, meaning the desire to kill had overtaken his body.

So, it would be better to find an ordinary person who hadn't been infected yet.

Upon seeing Bian Shangyu, Cyrus immediately thought of a perfect candidate.

That was the true mastermind behind the child abduction case, Cui Yongzhai.

Cui Yongzhai used to be a teacher and was also a psychopathic abuser. Cyrus had no qualms about using such a person for experiments and felt quite eager to try.

"The missing child is not the only one. He's tangled with someone important." Cyrus's explanation was reasonable.

Bian Shangyu didn't doubt it. With his experience, he knew that someone who frequently walks dark paths will eventually encounter ghosts. Clearly, the bastard had kidnapped someone important's daughter.

"You can't take him away."

Bian Shangyu could cooperate with Cyrus, but he would not allow him to take the person away. His childhood experiences made it impossible for him to truly trust anyone.

"Alright, shall we cooperate?" Cyrus extended his right hand to Bian Shangyu.

"Sure," Bian Shangyu nodded expressionlessly.

Bian Shangyu then led him to a room. He took a roll of tape from his pocket, tore off a strip, and wrapped it around his hands. He knocked on the door and said in a deep voice, "Your delivery has arrived. Please come out to sign for it."

Soon, there was a faint sound of footsteps.

Click! As soon as the door opened, Bian Shangyu swiftly covered the person's eyes with the tape and pushed him inside.

The entire action was smooth as silk.

"Excellent," Cyrus remarked as he noticed there were no cameras around. He closed the door behind him as he entered the room.

"Help! Someone's breaking in…"

Cui Yongzhai, with his eyes covered, struggled and called for help loudly.

"Shut up," Cyrus said, grabbing his chin with a powerful grip that seemed to crush it. The intense pain only made Cui Yongzhai whimper incomprehensibly.

Bian Shangyu glanced at Cyrus and then used tape to bind Cui Yongzhai into a tight bundle.

Even so, Cui Yongzhai, lying on the floor, continued to wriggle like a maggot, trying to crawl out of the room.

"Stop moving."

Bian Shangyu unceremoniously kicked him.

He then dragged Cui Yongzhai into his room, where the walls were covered with photos of abused children, a sight that was truly horrifying. Things like Cui Yongzhai were looked down upon even by other prisoners in jail.

Only the weak bully the weak, and Cui Yongzhai had clearly reached out to the most vulnerable in society for his own pleasure.

Bian Shangyu quickly found the missing girl's photo among the wall of pictures.

He studied the photo with a serious expression and then put it in his pocket. He turned on the TV and cranked the volume to the maximum.

"Want a smoke?" Bian Shangyu pulled out a pack of cigarettes, took one out, and lit it with a snap of his lighter, inhaling deeply and slowly exhaling a thick cloud of smoke.

"Sorry, I quit a long time ago."

Cyrus had long stopped using anything harmful to his body.

At the moment, he was more interested in Cui Yongzhai lying on the floor.

"Sir, do you feel despair towards this world?"

Cyrus ripped the tape off Cui Yongzhai's mouth and asked seriously.

Unable to breathe properly, Cui Yongzhai coughed violently as the tape was removed and said, "Why are you doing this to me? I didn't do anything wrong. Even if I made a mistake, it's all my fault. I won't call the police. I won't tell anyone."

Bian Shangyu didn't respond. He simply removed the cigarette from his mouth and placed it in Cui Yongzhai's.

"Doing this can easily block his airway. Don't be so aggressive," Cyrus said with a smile as he pushed Bian Shangyu's hand aside and used a scalpel made from flesh and bone to remove the cigarette from Cui Yongzhai's mouth.

Seeing this, Cui Yongzhai mistakenly thought Cyrus was a good person. "Let me go. I can give you a lot of money, and I promise I won't call the police."

"Do you feel despair? What is your current desire?" Cyrus asked again.

"Huh?" Cui Yongzhai looked puzzled, and even Bian Shangyu frowned.

"Answer me." Cyrus's smile vanished as he grabbed Cui Yongzhai's neck and lifted him off the ground with surprising ease.

Bian Shangyu's pupils dilated. He knew how much strength it took to perform such an action, and Cyrus did it with apparent ease. Was this guy even human?

"Ugh…" Cui Yongzhai's face turned visibly red, his eyes bloodshot. The intense sensation of suffocation made it hard for him to breathe.

When it seemed the time was right, Cyrus dropped him to the floor and asked the same question again.

"I'm not desperate. I'm not desperate. I have no desire right now. I really won't run away."

As the saying goes, evil begets evil. Cui Yongzhai's voice now carried a sobbing tone.

But clearly, his answer didn't satisfy Cyrus. What a joke! How could he not be desperate when death was imminent? This guy's will was a bit too strong.

In the next moment, Cyrus's scalpel was driven straight into Cui Yongzhai's thigh. The scalpel was thin, so there wasn't much blood flow.

"Sorry, but I need you to feel despair right now, despair towards the world, and also have a strong desire to live."

To be honest, Cyrus's demand was quite difficult. Generally, when someone is already in despair, it's hard to have a desire to live.

But Cyrus believed that anything was possible, and even if he failed, he had nothing to lose.

"I…" Cui Yongzhai felt a sense of despair as Cyrus's demands sank in. The man was more twisted than twisted itself.
