Chương 34: Promise Of Return

...

Jason stood in the middle of the sitting room, he stared at Emily who was meditating in the corner.

The girl was diligent, she always meditated for at least 4 hours before going to combat practice. After training she would talk to him, eat and sleep.

When he was thinking about the clan trial he really didn't think about how she would feel, her position in all of this mattered. In the future when she had realized her potential Emily would be an important asset.

He didn't want to make her feel left behind or cast aside. His decisions would shape what she would become in the future so he needed to make sure he dealt with the case sensibly.

Jason needed to choose his words carefully.

"Emily." Jason called out.

The girl didn't respond immediately but her eyes fluttered which meant she was listening.

"I've been called to attend something. I won't be back for some days."

As he expected Emily's eyes fluttered open, not a second later her face was plastered with an intense emotion.

Fear.

She was afraid that he was abandoning her.

"I'm afraid that I can't tell you about what's happening because I'm not allowed to tell that to outsiders."

Emily's eyes showed a hint of fear.

"Are you coming back?" her voice trembled, she struggled to keep it steady.

It seemed like she was about to cry at any moment.

Jason expected the question, if there was one problem that Emily had: It was fear of being abandoned. She didn't know how she suddenly got sold and turned into a slave but she knew she had to be abandoned for that to happen.

"Of course, I don't have anywhere else to go." His voice was light, he tried to make it seem as if it was nothing.

He wasn't lying to her. "I'll be back." He repeated the words and gave her a reassuring smile, one that he hoped she would trust.

Her expression softened but the fear was still evident.

She got up from her meditative position and moved towards Jason, her green eyes met Jason's as if she tried to check if what he said was true just by staring in his eyes.

"Is there anything I can do while you're gone?" She asked, her voice hesitant.

"Don't go outside."

She nodded quickly, her agreement automatic. It was clear that she trusted him; she would do what he wanted, even if it was as simple as staying inside.

"But you'll come back, right?"

Jason smiled.

'This girl... how many times do you want me to say I'll come back?!'

Even though Jason had warmed up to her he still wasn't a person who could tolerate children to the extent that he would wear a smile and find their antics adorable.

He found their antics annoying.

Though his frustration didn't move past his thoughts, he needed to sound reassuring.

Jason got down on one knee until he was face to face with Emily.

"I promise, I'll come back." Jason said as he put his left arm on her shoulder, his arm offered comfort impossible to find in words.

The girl smiled lightly, that action encouraged Jason to get up.

'Seriously, if she knew that things like pacts existed I would have been forced to make one right now.' Jason thought.

The silence that followed was thick.

Partly because Jason didn't know what he would say next and he was waiting for Emily to speak, and partly because of feelings one of them held that couldn't be fully expressed.

"Well Emily, see you soon." Jason said before patting her on the head.

He went towards the door, as Jason twisted the knob he spared one last look at Emily.

The girl was still watching him, her eyes were glued to him.

Jason didn't know how to handle her emotions in this moment, so he did the only thing that seemed natural. He gave a thumbs-up, he hoped the gesture would communicate everything he couldn't find the words for.

The door closed behind Jason as he stepped outside.

"Now, isn't it just to wait for the elder to pick me up?" Jason asked himself.

Teleportation treasures could be used to teleport to any marked location. It wouldn't come as a shock to anyone that every place in the clan residence was marked.

An elder was supposed to pick him up and take him to the place where the main event would start.

He would see all the branch family heirs and members of the main family.

All of them were taking part in the trial.

As Jason waited a figure suddenly appeared, his figure was blurry as if he was traveling slowly through space, but Jason could see clearly that he was bald.

It was the clan elder.

Slowly he began to take a more solid appearance.

He wore a long white robe that extended to his feet, no hair, a wrinkled face and piercing red eyes.

The elder looked at Jason for a few seconds as if observing him, the man's gaze shifted from Jason to his house.

He walked around it while observing the exterior of the place, his sharp eyes looked around for any bit of uncovered secret that was hidden.

Jason was watching the man, he couldn't help but feel suspicious.

'Why does this guy suddenly start inspecting my home?' Jason mused, though he couldn't think of a plausible answer. 'Normally the elders aren't even supposed to take any interest in me.'

Jason shook his head, he decided to dispel the thought for now.

After inspecting the exterior of the house the old man came back to his direction, his face showed visible confusion.

It was at this time that the elder finally inspected Jason's set of clothes.

A light blue hooded sweatshirt with the zip left open, a black shirt underneath it and dark blue trousers.

But the most distinct thing was the lack of an arm on his right shoulder.

"What happened to your arm?" The elder inquired.

Jason smiled painfully.

"I was using a dagger and mistakenly wounded my arm badly, the wound was so bad that I had to amputate the arm." Jason lied.

If he told any of the clan elders about the meeting with the clan elder they would believe that he had gone senile.

Truly, what would the clan guardian want to do with a boy that couldn't even use magic?

The elder seemed to believe him.

"Stand close to me as I activate it." He instructed.

Jason obeyed and stood close to the man.

He felt his body shifting, a small portion of himself began taking form in another place while his current self depleted.

The process was long, taking up to 5 seconds before he saw himself in a completely foreign place.

There was no vegetation here, it had only flat lands and devoid of wild life.

'The time for the teleportation was longer than I expected.'

Teleportation magic was almost instantaneous, the user was transported quickly. But the treasure took a lot of time to use, about 5 seconds.

In a fight waiting for a treasure to activate in five seconds would get you killed.

"Go ahead, they are waiting for you."

Jason walked slowly through the barren land, he could already see the people that he was up against.

There was a gathering of people ahead, Jason could tell that he was supposed to go in that direction.

"I guess it's time." Jason silently told himself.
