Chapter 30: The Three-Headed Dog
"We're going to the corridor on the right side of the fourth floor today. There must be something there. Ethan, are you coming with us?" George asked after they had chatted for a while.
They didn't go on night tours every day, but today, they couldn't resist the temptation from Dumbledore's last words yesterday. It was like the allure of a pirate's treasure map.
"No, my goal is the eighth floor!" Ethan replied without hesitation. With the Marauder's Map, the twins could easily see where everyone was. Although the Room of Requirement wasn't shown on the map, the place where someone disappeared before entering it would be visible.
"The eighth floor? The room opposite the tapestry where the troll is clubbing Barnabas the Barmy?" George asked, surprised.
Apart from the headmaster's office, that was the only room he could think of on the eighth floor. They had seen Dumbledore disappear in front of that wall through the Marauder's Map, and house-elves would disappear there and then reappear suddenly.
"Yeah, that's the place. You know about it?" Ethan was shocked. He had thought only Dobby had told Harry about it in the original book.
"We use that place as a base for product research and development. How did you know about it?" the twins asked, exchanging glances.
Their secret base had been discovered. They didn't think any other students would know about it. The room was incredibly useful, providing a place to make potions or practice alchemy, although it couldn't provide gold Galleons.
"I found it in an old textbook full of notes. It mentioned such a room," Ethan said casually. The Room of Requirement was a semi-public secret at Hogwarts, known to many students over the past thousand years.
"Across from the tapestry where the troll clubs Barnabas, just focus on your need and walk past that wall three times. A door will appear. Go in," George explained.
"Got it!" Ethan nodded.
"Are you coming with us to the corridor on the fourth floor, or heading directly to the eighth floor?" Fred asked as they left the abandoned classroom.
"Dumbledore said there might be life-threatening situations there," Ethan reminded them. The Mirror of Erised should still be in Dumbledore's office, and the Philosopher's Stone should not yet be there, but the three-headed dog certainly would be.
The three-headed dog was a dangerous XXXXX-level magical creature. Ordinary adult wizards would be mere snacks for it, and underage wizards were just prey. Ethan wondered if Dumbledore truly wasn't worried about any accidents.
Fred retorted, "I don't think Dumbledore would allow anything truly life-threatening in Hogwarts. At most, it's a challenge."
George agreed, "Yes, we've been to the Forbidden Forest several times without encountering any danger."
Hagrid must have had many headaches since the twins entered Hogwarts. Their spirit of adventure was impressive. The Forbidden Forest housed many dangerous creatures, some XXXXX-level. They had just been lucky so far.
"I'm curious, I'll go with you guys," Ethan decided. He couldn't back out now.
Following George and Fred, who knew Hogwarts well, they soon arrived at the right corridor on the fourth floor. After some searching, Fred confirmed the location of the locked door Dumbledore had mentioned.
"It's here, open it!" George said, raising his wand to cast an unlocking spell. There was no lock in Hogwarts he didn't dare to open.
Ethan's eyelid twitched, but he still cautioned, "Wait, go in slowly. Be careful."
George spread his hands, "Ethan, are you always this cautious?" Then he walked in first, with Fred following closely. Their recklessness was typical of Gryffindors.
As soon as Ethan entered, he saw George and Fred standing still, shaking. He looked ahead and saw a three-headed dog lying on the floor, drooling.
Just like in the movie, it was incredibly ugly, not at all like the legendary Cerberus. Ethan suspected it was a crossbreed with a Cane Corso.
Fred whispered, "This is Fluffy. I didn't expect to see it here."
"You know it?" Ethan asked.
"I know it, but it doesn't know me!" Fred replied, motioning for everyone to leave quickly. The three-headed dog was beginning to stir.
The two brothers had seen this creature before when it was smaller and followed Hagrid. Later, Hagrid had sworn them to secrecy and, as a reward, had taken them around the outer perimeter of the Forbidden Forest.
"Ethan, you go out first!" George signaled Ethan to leave. As third-year students, they could resist to some extent.
The three-headed dog had fully awakened by now. It stood at least four meters tall, with its heads touching the ceiling. Drool dripped from its three open mouths as it prepared to attack.
