Chapter 29: Fred and George
"We think you shouldn't have been sorted into Ravenclaw but into Gryffindor," said George.
"Really, I've never seen a little wizard go out at night right after starting school. Even we didn't dare until a month later!" added Fred.
The twins talked back and forth. When they saw Ethan's name appearing in the hall, they couldn't believe their eyes. A Ravenclaw going out at night just after school started? It made them question if there was something wrong with the Sorting Hat. Ethan's performance seemed more fitting for a Gryffindor, too bold to be ignored.
Since acquiring the Marauder's Map, they observed that the Gryffindor night tour team was the largest. Besides themselves and Lee Jordan, the other students were not quiet either. Slytherins were the second most frequent night wanderers. Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff had almost no participants, except for a few exceptions.
"Actually, the Sorting Hat also said I have the spirit of Gryffindor, but after thinking about it, I still chose Ravenclaw," Ethan explained.
"Okay, you're a hatstall; you can't be judged by common standards. But we still think you should be in Gryffindor," George said, unwavering. A little wizard who enjoyed night outings and took on Slytherins? He would be a perfect fit for Gryffindor.
"You can't say that. There are many beautiful witches in Ravenclaw. You should admit this!" Ethan gave them a knowing look.
"Why didn't I think of that before? I should have let George go to Ravenclaw. His intelligence can prove I'm smart," Fred said, slapping his forehead.
Some of their classmates were already in relationships, but the girls were also in Gryffindor. Some had confessed to Ravenclaw witches but were rejected with the reason, "You're too stupid."
"Why don't you go, then?" Fred suggested to George. Although finding a girlfriend was important, Gryffindor was still the best house in his heart.
"I'm your brother; you should listen to me," George said solemnly, patting Fred's shoulder.
"You were just born a little earlier than me!"
"Okay, you two are both born Gryffindors, you can't go to Ravenclaw!" Ethan interrupted, not wanting to see them argue any longer.
"You're right, we are born Gryffindors!" the brothers said simultaneously, their argument just a joke.
"Just now you said that the Disillusionment Charm is useless. Filch should not have this map!" Ethan still didn't understand. The Disillusionment Charm was crucial to his night travel plan.
Although Shadow Stealth was also useful, Ethan preferred not to be seen or discovered casting spells. Coming out of the shadows would inevitably be noticed by the portraits and other magical entities, which could inform Dumbledore.
Normally, it was fine to go out at night as long as you didn't get caught. Dumbledore would usually laugh it off. But using a magic that Dumbledore hadn't seen before, especially by a young wizard who had just entered school, would be problematic. No one would believe you if you claimed to have invented it. Even Snape invented his spells several years after entering school.
"Last year, one of our Gryffindors was caught using the Disillusionment Charm. He was discovered by Mrs. Norris, Filch's cat. She has Kneazle blood and super keen intuition," George explained.
"I see!" Ethan knew that Kneazles had a keen sense of detection. In the original story, Hermione's cat Crookshanks also had Kneazle blood and could sense that Scabbers was more than just a mouse. Ethan hadn't realized Mrs. Norris could detect the Disillusionment Charm.
"Filch has gone to the first floor. We can go out!" Fred checked the Marauder's Map and confirmed Filch's location.
"Amazing alchemical work. The creators of this map were geniuses!" Ethan marveled.
Although it was just the Marauder's Map, it employed many spells and alchemical knowledge. Each generation in the wizarding world seemed inferior to the last. Snape invented several spells as a student, including the powerful Sectumsempra. Except for Lupin, all the Marauders were illegal Animagi, completing this transformation during school. This required a high understanding of Transfiguration. Creating the Marauder's Map also demonstrated their skill in spells and alchemy.
"Now, young wizards don't seem to achieve as much. No one completes Animagus transformations or invents spells during school. They mostly focus on disarming spells," Ethan lamented. Perhaps this was due to Dumbledore confiscating many books from the restricted section of the Hogwarts Library.
"This is indeed an amazing alchemical prop. I'd love to meet the creators. Fred and I are learning alchemy. We'll definitely make better and more popular alchemical products in the future," George said.
Fred nodded in agreement, "Yes, our dream is to open Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and fill our joke shop with our own inventions."
"Do you know Zonko's Joke Shop and Gambol and Japes Wizarding Joke Shop? They are the most popular shops in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Our goal is to surpass them," George added, his eyes full of enthusiasm. The idea had struck the twins when they first visited Zonko's.
They had been saving money to open a shop in the future, but with so many siblings, their pocket money was limited, and they hadn't saved much yet.
"I believe you can definitely open the best joke shop," Ethan encouraged them. He wouldn't belittle others' dreams, especially since the Weasley twins did achieve this in the future. Although funded by Harry, the core of their shop's success was their products.
Weasley's Wizard Wheezes became incredibly popular, even with the Ministry of Magic purchasing their products later.
The talents of these two brothers were undeniable. The production of joke products involved potions, alchemy, and spells. Integrating these was no easy task. If they focused their efforts, they wouldn't face such a tragic end.
