Chapter 19: Sorting
Following Professor McGonagall, everyone came to a small empty chamber, rubbing shoulders with each other, nervously eyeing everything around them.
The Sorting was about to start, and most students were tense.
"Welcome to Hogwarts!" Professor McGonagall looked at everyone and said seriously, "The opening banquet is about to begin, but before you go to the Great Hall and take your seats, you must first be sorted into your houses..."
"In a few minutes, the Sorting Ceremony will be held in front of all the teachers and students of the school. When it is ready, I will come to fetch you. During this period, please keep quiet."
After speaking, Professor McGonagall walked towards the Great Hall.
Once she left, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Professor McGonagall's stern demeanor had put a lot of pressure on them.
"How will they accurately sort us into the houses?" Ethan heard Harry's voice.
"Maybe we need to pass some kind of test. I heard from my brother that this test is very hard on our bodies."
Ronald bragged to Harry again.
However, his memory was not very good. The twins had deceived him countless times, but Ronald still believed their lies.
With Harry and Ronald leading, the anxiety of the group grew.
One by one, they began to discuss the rumors they had heard.
Some said they would duel with trolls, and others said they would have to perform magic on the spot.
A group of pure-bloods firmly believed that as long as they had noble blood and exceptional talents, they would definitely be assigned to Slytherin.
"What is that?"
A panicked voice that overpowered the entire crowd sounded, drawing everyone's attention.
The room immediately fell silent, and no one dared to move. They saw over twenty pearly white, translucent ghosts suddenly float out of the wall.
Ethan watched the ghosts' every move. He had been to Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley many times but had never seen a ghost.
This was his chance, so Ethan naturally observed carefully.
He wondered what the difference was between Voldemort's current state and these ghosts, and whether the method of making Horcruxes involved the birth of ghosts.
The only thing he could confirm was that these ghosts had no physical form, but he didn't know if they could use magic.
Facing Dementors, which were also considered magical creatures without physical form, he wondered which side was more powerful.
Could ordinary spells or dark magic work on these ghosts?
The more Ethan thought about it, the more he wanted to experiment on a ghost.
"Move forward now!" A sharp voice sounded, "The Sorting Ceremony is about to begin."
With the arrival of Professor McGonagall, the ghosts disappeared through the opposite wall.
After organizing the students, Professor McGonagall led them out of the chamber, through the entrance hall, and into the magnificent Great Hall.
At this time, students from other years were sitting around four long tables according to their houses. Above the tables were thousands of floating candles, illuminating the entire hall.
On the stage at the top of the hall was another long table, where the professors sat.
In the center was Dumbledore, wearing a luxurious dark blue robe, with flowing silver-white hair, a small wizard hat, a well-trimmed long beard, and a long, crooked nose.
Ethan and the other first-years were brought by Professor McGonagall and lined up in a row, facing the four house tables.
After arranging everyone, Professor McGonagall gently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first-years. On the stool was a pointed wizard hat, patched, worn, and dirty, with a sense of history.
Suddenly, the hat twisted, and a wide crack appeared on the edge of the hat, like a mouth, and it began to sing its annual song: "You may think I'm not pretty..."
After seven or eight minutes, the Sorting Hat finished its song and received applause from the audience, not because it sang well, but because everyone was polite.
"Now, when I call your name, come forward to put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted."
Professor McGonagall took out a parchment and addressed the first-years. The real show was finally beginning.
"Hannah Abbott!"
A girl with a ruddy face and two golden braids stumbled out of the line. It was Hannah, who had just been on the boat with Ethan and the others. She was clearly very nervous.
She put on the hat, and in a moment, the result was announced.
"Hufflepuff!"
Ethan could see that Hannah's nervous face relaxed, and the students at the table on the right applauded and cheered for her.
"Susan Bones!"
The result came soon after.
"Hufflepuff!"
Susan, who got the result, was not disappointed and happily ran to sit with Hannah.
The Hufflepuffs were even more excited, clapping enthusiastically. With two new members, Hufflepuff was off to a strong start.
As more students were sorted, the four house tables below grew more animated.
"Hermione Granger!"
Hearing her name, Hermione almost ran to the stool and hurriedly put the hat on her head.
This time it took a little longer, but not to the point of embarrassment. "Gryffindor!"
She went to Gryffindor, as expected.
What happened next was no different from what Ethan remembered.
Neville went to Gryffindor, and Draco went to Slytherin.
The atmosphere reached its peak when Harry Potter was sorted into Gryffindor.
The cheers of the Gryffindors nearly blew the roof off the thousand-year-old castle. "Cassandra Vole!"
A slender girl with golden curly hair walked out of the line with graceful steps.
As soon as the hat touched Cassandra's head, it shouted: "Slytherin!"
Now it was the Slytherins' turn to cheer.
This time it was genuine enthusiasm, not the perfunctory applause from before.
