Chapter 5: Ollivanders Wand Shop*

Outside Gringotts, Ethan played with the gold Galleons in his hand, looking at Professor McGonagall with curiosity.

"Professor McGonagall, is there actual gold in these Galleons?"

"I don't know for certain. The wizarding world's currency is minted by goblins and enchanted to remain perpetually shiny and resistant to magical wear," Professor McGonagall explained, inwardly amused by Ethan's curious nature—perhaps a Ravenclaw in the making.

Deciding not to dwell on it further, Ethan made up his mind.

Led by Professor McGonagall, they strolled through Diagon Alley until they reached the entrance of a small, weathered shop—Ollivanders.

"It may not look like much, but the craftsmanship of the Ollivander family is unparalleled. Almost every Hogwarts student gets their wand from here," Professor McGonagall reassured Ethan, sensing his apprehension about the shop's appearance.

Inside, Ethan gazed around at the tall, narrow boxes stacked nearly to the ceiling, making the already small shop feel even more cramped.

"Good morning!"

Ollivander emerged from behind a stack of wands, wearing a kind smile.

"Nine and a half inches, fir, dragon heartstring. Fine and elegant, suitable for a wizard with strong will and Transfiguration talent—Minerva, just like the one you bought here years ago."

Ollivander's old habit returned, recalling wand details from memory whenever a customer revisited.

"Good morning, Garrick. That was decades ago," Professor McGonagall sighed, accustomed to hearing this annually.

"And you, young wizard, what is your name? Please step forward," Ollivander beckoned, ready to begin.

"To Ethan Adrian!"

With his name announced, Ethan approached Ollivander.

"Which hand do you use predominantly?"

"My right hand, sir," Ethan replied, extending his right hand for measurement.

Ollivander took the measurements, knowing that an eleven-year-old wizard's potential for growth was substantial.

Reviewing the data, Ollivander fetched several boxes from a counter in the rear.

Placing the boxes down, Ollivander turned to Ethan with solemnity.

"Each wand is unique. It is not the wizard who chooses the wand, but the wand that chooses the wizard."

"Mr. Adrian, try this one—apple wood, unicorn hair, nine inches. Ideal for wizards with lofty goals. Give it a wave."

Handing the wand to Ethan, he waved it gently. The wand on his right burst with a loud bang, sending dust flying.

"Cough! It seems that this isn't the one."

"Reparo!"

Ollivander repaired the scattered boxes with a wave of his wand.

"Don't worry, this is normal. Let's try this one!"

"Redwood, dragon heartstring, eleven and a half inches. This wand brings good fortune and packs a powerful punch with its dragon heartstring core."

After reassuring Ethan, Ollivander handed him another wand.

Ethan felt a warm sensation in his palm as he waved it twice.

A burst of red flames shot out from the wand, almost singeing Ollivander's white hair.

Touching his hair, Ollivander swiftly took the wand from Ethan's grasp.

"Cedar wood, phoenix feather, ten and three-quarters inches. Suitable for wizards with keen insight."

Handing Ethan the next wand, Ollivander stepped back cautiously.

*Bang!*

An ancient vase shattered nearby.

Undeterred, Ollivander cast a quick repair spell and retrieved another wand for Ethan.

*Boom!*

"Try this one instead."

*Crack!*

"Ah, discerning customers! Let's try this."

...

Nearly an hour passed as Ethan tried dozens of wands—some fizzled, some were dismissed as "unsuitable" by Ollivander.

Yet a few wands felt remarkably smooth in Ethan's grasp, casting spells effortlessly. Despite Ethan's confidence in spells like Petrificus Totalus and Lumos, Ollivander still deemed them unsuitable.

"Mr. Adrian, please wait a moment. I know just the wand for you."

Turning, Ollivander disappeared into the storeroom.

Most shopkeepers might have turned away such a discerning customer, but not Ollivander—he relished the challenge.

For him, matching the right wand with a picky customer was immensely satisfying.

The wands Ethan had tried were all mainstream in Britain—unicorn hair, phoenix feather, and dragon heartstring cores—Ollivander's favorites.

These cores theoretically met the needs of most wizards:

- Unicorn hair reflected pure magic, resistant to external magical influences, loyal and stable, though averse to dark magic.

- Phoenix feathers allowed for a wide range of spells, with some initiative, but were notoriously choosy.

- Dragon heartstrings produced the most potent spells but were volatile and susceptible to dark magic.

Ollivander had experimented with other materials too—thunderbird feathers, jackalope horns, ocelot hair, veela hair, kelpie manes, troll whiskers, thestral tail hairs, horned water snake horns, among others.
