Chapter 26: Levitation Charm
For whatever reason, spending more time together inevitably altered relationships. Some grew closer, like Wade and his SSC companions, while others became more hostile, such as Potter and Malfoy, whose feud became a familiar sight at Hogwarts.
That evening, Wade and Michael returned to the Ravenclaw common room, narrowly making curfew once again. Upon entering, Michael was immediately pulled away by two girls—Halloween was approaching, and excitement buzzed through the students. A small party was brewing in the common room, stocked with butterbeer, rum, and whiskey bought over the weekend in Hogsmeade, filling the air with a heady aroma.
Michael attempted to drag Wade along, but Wade waved him off—such gatherings held little appeal to him. Last time, he witnessed two unfamiliar faces passionately kissing on the sofa after too many drinks, surrounded by cheering onlookers, creating an atmosphere of revelry and abandon.
Despite living in the West for eleven years, Wade remained reserved and cautious, particularly about emotions and physical contact compared to his peers.
Ascending the spiral staircase to the dormitory, everything was as immaculate as ever. The clothes he had changed out of yesterday were washed, ironed, and neatly folded in the wardrobe.
A steaming pot of water awaited on his desk. Wade poured himself a glass, the temperature perfect on his tongue.
At Hogwarts, the long tables usually held various fruit juices, vegetable juices, or hot chocolate, and students typically drank water directly from the tap. Wade found this custom unfamiliar. Some time ago, he left a note with his dirty clothes, requesting hot water upon returning to the dormitory.
The next morning, he found a pot of steaming black tea on his desk—apparently, the house elves hadn't quite grasped the concept of "hot water," as perhaps no one had ever made such a request before.
So Wade added a clarification: *"Thank you for the black tea, but what I desire is plain hot water, simply boiled without any tea leaves."*
From that day onward, whenever he returned to the dormitory, a pot of hot water awaited him, even each morning upon waking.
It must be acknowledged that half the comfort of life at Hogwarts was provided by the house elves.
Before retiring for the night, Wade set three miniature pumpkin carriages on the table, conjured through his Transfiguration skills. Suspended before each carriage was a small lantern emitting a bright green glow.

Upon waking early on Halloween morning, the entire castle was infused with the aroma of roasted pumpkins.
The pumpkin carriages on Wade's desk had disappeared, replaced by a fresh pot of hot water, a plate of pumpkin cookies, a handful of dew-covered flowers, and a collection of beautiful pebbles.
The heart-shaped cookies were fragrant, the flowers glistening with dewdrops, and the thumb-sized pebbles resembling gemstones—a thoughtful gesture from the house elves.
Wade chuckled to himself.
He didn't mind the simplicity of the elves' gifts—they owned nothing but the tea towels they wore, possessions technically belonging to Hogwarts.
Halloween wasn't a holiday; it began with an early Charms class. Professor Flitwick paired students to practice the Levitation Charm. Wade partnered with Anthony Goldstein.
"Remember the subtle wrist movements we've been practicing!" Professor Flitwick instructed sharply. "A flick and a swish! Precision in wand movement and accurate pronunciation are crucial—remember what happened to Wizard Baruffio, who mispronounced 's' for 'f' and found himself flattened by a buffalo!"
The students chanted in unison, *"Wingardium Leviosa!"*
Feathers before Wade immediately fluttered upwards—he had used this spell countless times in the Umbrella House, mostly to rearrange furniture. Hermione and Michael succeeded soon after, prompting Professor Flitwick to applaud and award two points to everyone.
Then came a surprising sight—Neville's feather trembled and floated a couple of feet above him, resembling a boat on turbulent waters.
Gryffindors stared in disbelief; Neville was notorious for clumsiness in every class, receiving praise only from Professor Sprout. Considering how challenging the Levitation Charm was for young wizards, Neville's success—even partial—was as astonishing as a troll performing ballet.
"Excellent! Well done, Mr. Longbottom!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed, awarding Gryffindor five points.
"Did Longbottom just succeed?" Anthony beside Wade exclaimed in astonishment, attempting the spell repeatedly without success.
Anthony, tall and sturdy, recited the incantation flawlessly but struggled with the intricate wrist movements. His attempts grew increasingly distorted.
"Wait!" Wade intervened just as Anthony almost poked the student in front. He drew a steep sine wave on paper with directional arrows indicating speed, placing it before Anthony. "Follow this path with your wand—maintain control within these bounds."
Anthony accepted without question. Both being Ravenclaws, they recognized Wade's spell-casting prowess. Anthony practiced in silence, then waved his wand.
*"Wingardium Leviosa!"*
Feathers immediately ascended, soaring higher until they brushed the chandelier above. Anthony stared in awe, reluctant to lower his wand.
Terry Boot and Lavender Brown, sitting nearby, reached for the parchment almost simultaneously. Eventually, Lavender's agility secured it for their group.
*"Wingardium Leviosa!"*
Feathers floated on the right side of the classroom, drawing Professor Flitwick's attention. As Lisa Turpin grabbed the parchment, a small hand tugged it away from below. Professor Flitwick inspected with a smile. "Ah, a clever method of guidance indeed."
