Chapter 2: Shopping in Diagon Alley

Who is Wade Gray?

Though he is a descendant of wizards, his parents are both squibs, making him no different from a Muggle in the eyes of true wizards.

Ferdinand told Wade in detail about the wars caused by Grindelwald in modern times and the brutal killings instigated by the second-generation Dark Lord.

Even the last news they received about the magical world was that their parents were killed one after another because of the war.

"Wade, you are very good and always make your mother and me proud. But you must know that in the wizarding world, the first thing people value is origin."

"Pure-bloods, half-bloods, and Muggle-borns are naturally divided into different levels in the eyes of many people. About ten years ago, the most powerful dark wizard at that time, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, strongly advocated the 'bloodline theory.' He and his followers brutally murdered many Muggles and Muggle-born wizards, as well as pure-bloods who opposed him."

"My mother and I were also forced to completely cut off contact with the wizarding world at that time... Even if peace is restored now, there must be many wizards who believe in pure-blood supremacy, and I have no doubt that they will pass this prejudice and malice on to their children..."

"Wade, I'm worried... Hogwarts may not be as wonderful as we imagined..."

Ferdinand said worriedly.

After hearing this, Wade smiled quietly.

"Don't worry, Dad. There must be classmates with the same background as me at the school. As long as I have enough friends around me, others won't dare to cause trouble for me easily, right?"

He paused and then said, "And...no matter where you are, absolute strength can crush any prejudice. I will study hard and try to become the best."

After hearing this, Ferdinand was not very reassured. He thought sadly: But my son... you have never shown any magical ability. Maybe your magic power is only slightly stronger than that of a squib...

How can there be any strength in this?

But to protect his son's self-esteem, Ferdinand did not voice his thoughts.

Minerva McGonagall arrived faster than Wade expected.

The day after receiving the letter, when the Gray family was having breakfast, they suddenly heard a knock on the door. Wade put down his knife and fork and opened the door. The moment he saw the person, he immediately recognized her identity.

It wasn't because she looked exactly like the one in the movie—Wade had almost forgotten the plot of the movie he saw many years ago, and the image of the actor didn't leave much of an impression;

It wasn't because the serious-looking lady in front of him was wearing a conspicuous green robe. Ordinary people wouldn't dress like this at all.

It was because there was a string of handwritten names above her head——

"Minerva McGonagall."

Wade was silent, and doubts arose in his heart again—Is all this true?

Or is it not the world of "Harry Potter" that he traveled to, but the game world called "Harry Potter"? Am I just an NPC who has awakened his past life memories and self-awareness...

"Hello, Mr. Gray."

While Wade was lost in thought, Minerva McGonagall tried her best to smile gently, but she still looked serious.

"I am Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts and Professor of Transfiguration."

Wade hurriedly retracted his wandering thoughts: "Welcome, Professor McGonagall, please come in and have a cup of tea."

The Gray couple heard the sound and hurried out. They looked in awe at this wizard who seemed mysterious and difficult to get along with. For a moment, they couldn't find their voices and stammered:

"Yes, welcome—welcome—Professor, madam, please come in and sit down!"

Ferdinand smiled warmly and glanced hastily at his son, as if worried he would be cursed by the wizard.

Wade was much calmer, knowing that this lady was an extremely decent and kind-hearted person.

He controlled his gaze not to look at the other person's head, and opened the door to invite her in.

McGonagall came this time primarily to prove the authenticity of the magic school and persuade the couple to allow their child to attend; and secondarily to take Wade to buy school supplies.

She had met many Muggle families who didn't believe in magic, suspected she wanted to capture their children for secret experiments, or preferred that their children go to Muggle schools, so she had prepared several tricks in advance.

However, this family did not question magic too much. Instead, they were more concerned about the reading environment, which made her task very easy.

So not long after, the group arrived at Charing Cross Road in London, and Professor McGonagall took them into the dingy and small Leaky Cauldron pub.

Probably because it was too early, there were not many customers in the bar. A hunchbacked man who was cleaning a table said hello: "Good morning, Professor McGonagall."

He glanced at the family of three dressed as Muggles, focusing on Wade, who was much shorter than the others, and said casually: "Is this kid the new student at Hogwarts this year?"

"Good morning, Tom." Professor McGonagall said, "I brought Mr. Gray here to buy the things he needs for school."

Several people walked through the bar and into the small patio at the back. Professor McGonagall stood next to the trash can, took out her wand, and pointed: "Mr. Grey, please remember this place. If you want to enter Diagon Alley, you need to go through here. Three taps on the top and two on the side..."

The wand tapped three times on a wall tile.

The bricks on the wall all moved, as if an invisible hand was adjusting their shape. In the blink of an eye, a wide arch appeared on the wall, and noisy voices rushed in.

"Wow--"

The Gray family couldn't help but exclaim.

In front of them was a winding street, with shops on both sides full of dazzling goods, selling all kinds of strange things.

People wearing wizard robes came and went, bargaining, children acting coquettish to their parents, chasing and playing, giving the street an extremely noisy and lively feel.

McGonagall led the three of them through many shops and to Gringotts. Ferdinand had already prepared the money to be exchanged. He took out a large bag of pounds and exchanged it for fifty gold Galleons.

Before leaving, Professor McGonagall reminded them that the amount of Muggle banknotes that could be exchanged in Gringotts was limited, but there was no limit on metal coins or gold, jewelry, etc.

Then, under the guidance of Professor McGonagall, they bought uniforms, textbooks, scales, cauldrons, wands, and other items for school, and finally bought an owl as a pet.

Accompanied by Professor McGonagall of Hogwarts, the shopkeepers were polite even when they saw them wearing Muggle clothes.

By the way, Wade's wand is made of poplar wood with unicorn hair, twelve inches (about 30 cm) long. Poplar wood symbolizes rebirth, and Wade felt very connected to it.

It was as if his secrets were seen through by this wand.
