My mom’s D&C took place the following Tuesday. Typically, patients didn’t stay long in the hospital unless there were complications or additional health conditions, but because of my mom’s advanced condition, she was asked to stay a full day for observation. We were set to leave the next day.
As expected, Ali was there. That guy was practically stealing my mom from me. We sat on chairs on either side of her bed, cracking jokes and trying to make her laugh, even though she could barely respond.
Ali leaned forward, waving his hands animatedly as he recounted some stupid story from school. "And then, Mrs. Allen caught Ming sneaking snacks during math, and you know what he did? Nothing!"
My mom’s weak smile appeared as she shook her head slightly. "That poor teacher," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You kids are too much."
Dad? He wasn't here. It was as if he still couldn't believe it. Or he just didn't care anymore or maybe it was just fear.
