Chương 69: Getting to Know Each Other While Flying Dragons

"Your dragon is very excited; it seems to really like Syrax's company." Rhaenyra said, watching Haldor's dragon continuously perform many of the techniques Ravyn had shown earlier.

Haldor hadn't imagined that Azazel still remembered those, so he replied, "It seems that's the case."

"So, no one has tried to assassinate you again?"

"No, not since the last time. Did you send them to keep me away from you? It might be a mystery to you, but I'm sure many young ladies envy you."

Rhaenyra nodded and said with a smile, "I'm sure I'm lucky."

Putting the jokes aside, Haldor looked into the distance and said, "I never thought about getting married, to be honest. I didn't expect to escape the North alive, as many have tried to kill me for as long as I can remember."

"Then you are very lucky." Rhaenyra mentioned this, leaving many things open to interpretation.

Haldor understood and said, "I suppose I am very lucky, though I am nervous. Everyone around me calls me the star of the North; they expect my dreams to lead them into a battle we will win, but they forget something important—my inexperience in leading."

"No one fights wars by learning; I'm sure you have the same experience as a sixty-year-old because no one has experienced a war in the last few hundred years."

"Yes, but this type of war isn't merely about experience... That thing behind the wall is something incredibly dangerous, something we don't understand well, and everyone expects me to take care of it."

Rhaenyra had slowly gotten to know Haldor, learning many things about him and realizing she wasn't the only one with difficulties. She now didn't know which position was better, one where she had to raise a sword or another where she was expected to win a war that hadn't happened yet.

"I like living in peace, unfortunately, I've had to change a lot to survive in this world of lions and wolves, but I still enjoy places like this where it's just me and people beside me who want the same thing, to be free…"

Haldor took a ring from his pocket, looked at Rhaenyra, and said, "I might die before you start to love me, but from now until then, I promise to protect you."

"I don't need your protection."

"Believe me, you will need it. Many will vie for your brother's throne, and you will be the only one who can protect it, so you must know that you need my help, which won't depend on asking and offering. I will be the one always by your side." Haldor said, taking the princess's hand and placing the ring on her finger.

Rhaenyra smiled slightly, like a young lady in love, and asked, "Don't you also need someone to take care of you?"

"It wouldn't be bad for a princess to heal my wounds after battles; I think that way they will last longer." Haldor said ironically, watching his dragon fly energetically from side to side.

"The princess only serves to bear children; I don't think I can help you in those cases."

"Hmm, you've made your priorities clear, but I'll give you the freedom to choose, and only when you feel ready will we take the next step. For now, let's just be what they want us to be so we don't kill each other."

"That's a good deal, but are you sure you won't regret your words?"

"I hope not; I have never broken my word before."
