Some days later, Sam and I were still going strong. School had officially started, and something interesting happened: Sam made friends with Moon and Yasmin. They spent time together after training, and I joined them occasionally. One day, while we were in the cafeteria, Kyler tried to hit on Sam, but I quickly intervened.
"Hey baby, did you get hurt falling from the heavens?" Kyler said with a smirk.
"Beat it, scumbag. I have a boyfriend," Sam shot back, her voice firm.
Kyler stepped closer, undeterred. "Drop that zero and get yourself a hero."
"Get away from me," Sam insisted, clearly uncomfortable as he grabbed her hand.
Seeing what he was doing, I stood up. "Let her hand go, or you'll lose it," I warned.
Kyler walked toward me, his bravado evident. "Who do you think you are?"
I towered over him and replied, "Her boyfriend. Now back off."
In a desperate attempt to assert himself, he tried to punch me. I deflected his punch easily and retaliated with a solid hit to his stomach. He doubled over, and I followed up with a roundhouse kick to his head. He flew back, and I noticed his friend trying to attack me. I ran forward and executed a flying kick, hitting the heavier kid square in the face and sending him crashing to the ground.
The remaining kids scrambled to pick up Kyler and the fat kid, fleeing in cowardice. Sam looked at me and said, "You know I can protect myself."
"I know, but that guy pissed me off," I replied, feeling adrenaline still coursing through my veins.
"I love you so much," she said, and we shared a kiss that felt like a promise.
As time passed, another interesting development occurred. I was eating in the cafeteria with Sam and the girls when I overheard someone say, "She is really beautiful." Another voice chimed in, "Go talk to her. What's the worst that can happen? Her boyfriend killing you?"
I glanced back and saw Demetri, Eli, and Miguel looking at me. I grinned at them and then turned back to Sam, kissing her passionately. She responded hungrily, and I could see the boys scowling. Demetri muttered, "That lucky bastard," and the others nodded in agreement.
After a moment, I pulled away and said, "Let's get out of here." The girls nodded, and we got up to leave.
Just as we exited, Kyler walked in. He approached Miguel and the others, sneering, "Hey losers, Lip, stupid face, and the Mexican."
Miguel replied quietly, "I'm from Ecuador."
Kyler, unfazed, walked up to Miguel, slamming his head into the table. "I said Mexican! Am I understood?"
Eli chimed in, "Clearly, just let him go; he didn't know better."
Kyler sneered, "Good. Now give me all your money, and I'll let him go." The boys scrambled, handing over their cash, and Kyler released Miguel, saying, "Good doing business with you, freaks," before strutting away.
Demetri sighed, "That guy is the worst."
Miguel replied, "I'll get you your money by tomorrow."
Eli shook his head. "No need; we didn't have much money with us, and it wasn't your fault." Miguel nodded in gratitude, and they continued their meal, the atmosphere heavy with frustration.
A couple of days later, I was driving around town with Sam when she said, "I'm hungry. Let's stop to eat something."
I replied, "It's getting late, but I'll stop here to grab us some snacks." She kissed my cheek, and I pulled into the parking lot of a small mall. I got out of the car and headed into a mini-mart. Inside, I spotted Miguel chatting with a blond man in his 50s.
"What's up?" I greeted Miguel.
"What's up, man?" he replied, and we fell into a comfortable silence. I picked up a bag of chips and a milk chocolate bar, then headed back outside.
Just as I was about to get into my car, I saw Kyler bullying Miguel. My blood boiled. I marched over, grabbed Kyler by the shoulder, and flipped him over my shoulder, slamming him into the ground. At the same moment, the old man from the mini-mart landed a punch on the fat kid, knocking him out cold.
I grabbed one of Kyler's friends, spun him around, and slammed him into a nearby wall. Behind me, I saw the blond man kicking another boy into the wall, rendering him unconscious.
Suddenly, we heard sirens approaching. "Bye, amigos!" I shouted, sprinting back to my car and speeding away. The blond man called out, "He's a good guy!" and Miguel nodded in agreement.
After we got some distance, Sam turned to me, frowning. "You know I don't like it when you get into fights."
I smirked, "Everyone makes mistakes, even the best of us." She punched my shoulder playfully before kissing me again.
I thought to myself, I love my life, and I floored it, the thrill of the moment propelling us into the night.
